Have any of the people who keep bizarrely coming back over & over & over again to this meme, as if insulting somebody is somehow a win and being insulted is somehow a loss, ever specified what kind of response Cruz should have given that would have made a different impression?
Honestly, I can see an argument in favor of Cruz's actual behavior if we entertain the possibility that Trump is really an ideal president. It's appropriate to defend your family from insults and it's also appropriate to swallow your pride and support a competent leader, whatever his past transgressions.
Of course, Trump is a terrible president and Cruz knew he would be. His change of position is not plausibly because he found out that Trump is really good at this job. Rather, he found it politically expedient to support a man who is a horrible president and a terrible person.
This is why Cruz is rightly ridiculed. It's not just that he's overlooking personal slights to support Trump. He's doing so while knowing damned well that Trump is bad for the nation and for nothing more than his personal political prospects.
Charitably, I suppose, he could be just stupid and thinks Trump is doing dandy.
