2020 Presidential Election part 2

Again we had ten faithless electors last election, so anything within that margin of error isn't some crazy conspiracy theory to pitch a hissy fit (naming no names *cough cough*) about if someone brings up it making them nervous.

You are correct about the Executive Order thing. The one good thing about Trump's stupid "Because I say so, make it happen" method of leadership is Biden can undo it with an afternoon, a pen, and a stack of official Whitehouse letterhead.

Biden will also be able to appoint competent people to replace all of the "acting" positions under the Trump administration. That alone will improve the functionality of the federal government.

Just wait till our cowboy ******* faithless electors actually vote. A couple turncoats could flip this one without breaking a sweat.

I'm not sure about every instance, but every time I have seen a comment from a faithless elector about why they did it, it has been that they did it mostly to illustrate how fragile the electoral college system is.

I think a couple of times there might have also been a bit of a "protest vote" element, where someone said, "I hate our party's candidate, and the election is wrapped up to voice my disapproval this way."

I don't think we'll have any faithless electors in a situation where it would actually change the election outcome.

At least, it has never happened yet in American history, but there's always a first time, eh?

There goes the kiss of death, ("Surely nothing crazy would happen in an election!!! With our system!??!? What could possibly happen?!?!?)

Would be nice if some electors actually valued decency and democracy and were so appalled by Trumps attempted "stop counting" fraud that they actually voted for Biden...

I really hope the Interstate Voting Compact reaches the tipping point before 2024.

When one candidate is up by several millions votes and everyone agrees that's not going to change... that should be the election.

We shouldn't be, yet again, sitting here days after the election waiting on a few thousand people in a few counties in 3 or 4 states to tell us who they've decided the President is going to be.

I've had that fantasy as well.

And it's about as likely to come true as that other fantasy involving Cleopatra.

But we can dream.

Apparently if Biden takes 65% of the remaining votes to be counted in Georgia, he'll win the state.

This is so profoundly un-American that I really think your posit is a possibility.

I wonder for how many more cycles the GOP can really keep up this self-destructive downward spiral. Already, as we all know, they can only win by cheating.

Even in a post-fact world, obstructing everything Democrat presidents do must hurt them badly in the long run, even if certain people in their base likes it.

What if most people who identify as conservatives simply like their way of life?
Obstructionism to stem the tide of change is completely reasonable if you don't want the changes that Democratic presidents support to be implemented.

agreed.

But it won't be this election, I fear.

It's so weird.

It's so inherently undemocratic and so against everything we think of as how American politics should work but a failsafe "Okay no seriously he can't be President, sorry" is... like literally what the Electoral College is.

It's so weird that the one use of the Electoral College that would seem the most wrong to us is the only one that would really be in the original spirit of the idea.

Is Susan Collins an elector? I think she'll express deep concern, and then vote for Trump.

(I don't know if senators can be electors, but there is one electoral vote for Trump in Maine.)

Does anyone understand why Alaska hasn't been called by the networks? I tend to think of Alaska as one of those, "The polls have been closed for three seconds, and we project Alaska is Republican. Oh.....they don't close until an hour from now? Whatever."

But there it sits on the map, in white.

Maybe they are hoping that there will be a great backlash after Trump used a racial slur about Eskimos?

(Note: "Eskimo" is actually a bit of a racial slur, but that's not important now.)

Or maybe it is actually red, but it's covered in snow so it shows up as white.

The Guardian has made an interesting point that the ballots of service members who are deployed overseas often arrive rather late. Trump is essentially arguing that those ballots should not be counted. I wonder if anyone in the GOP cares.

Trump Tweets

ANY VOTE THAT CAME IN AFTER ELECTION DAY WILL NOT BE COUNTED!

They are playing the mid-long game.

Biden gets in office, he accomplishes nothing in his first two years because of a Republican Senate/SCOTUS. He's seen as weak and ineffective. GOP makes huge gains in the midterm.

the flip side of the coin is that it backfires, because the electorate finally wakes up to the obstruction of the GOP, and votes the bums out

The only real problem with that is that Trump has been such a profoundly un-American President from the start and those who support him have either been able to turn a blind eye to that all along or have reconciled themselves to such behavior being acceptable for whatever reason.
