RBG leaves the stage.

We've established in the last four years that Republicans, aren't real Americans. They don't share our values and they aren't patriots. There can no longer be any consideration of fairness, decency or honor with their kind. If the Democrats take the Senate, or when they do again (and they will) they need to get rid of the filibuster and add Washington DC and Puerto Rico as states. I'm not against them stacking the court either. If the unwritten rules don't matter anymore then the Republicans can pay the price for their treason to their nation. No American should ever have any qualms about breaking their word to a Republican ever again. Their kind don't rate such consideration.

And to the millions and millions that think that you are the unamerican one?

Trump Says

"We need 9 justices. You need that. With the unsolicited millions of ballots that they're sending you're gonna need 9 justices."

Romney earned some respect from me for his 'yes' impeachment vote. He cancelled that with his spineless surrender to McConnell. I guess he only had so much integrity in him and he used it all up.

It could be that he wants a vote in order to firmly vote "no" and ride the public opinion train to divest himself of Trump a.k.a. the McCain effect. It isn't likely, but it could happen.

Who are you? The Marquis de Sade with your cruel post to give me false hope?

Yeah, but say Romney is counting on that, and he votes no to the appointment, and it passes 52-48 (Collins and Murkowski turn out to have fallen in line after all after putting up a token bit of protest), then Romneyis hated by Democrats and Republicans alike, will be thrown out by his electorate and looks stupid rather than noble.

If he truly thinks the Republicans should not get to appoint a judge, he needs to say so loudly and clearly and work to secure other Republicans to denounce the hypocrisy.

If you were a Mormon senator from Utah and had the chance to vote in a conservative Justice....you'd vote 'no' to let the democrats vote in a more liberal one??
Because?
I cannot think of why he would ever even consider different. It wouldnt be fair or right as to his duty to the constituents that voted for him.

This is not a Trump thing. This is the SCOTUS.

Confirmed bigot by your own words. Out of curiosity what's your opinion on Blacks and Jews?

Romney's a right-wing Republican. He wants to put a right-wing Republican on the bench. He's practically said as much.

And be just as publicly denounced by Trump and make the rest rally against him.

versus

Quietly get three other Republicans to vote 'no' with him in a surprise rebuke. In late October. Trump's election chances would be screwed. That'd be it for him. Romney might be persona non grata in Mitch McConnell's caviar parties, but what, is Utah not going to elect a Mormon?

Like I said, it's not likely to happen because there's been plenty of times even one GOP senator turning would have made a difference yet none were found. But you know, what if.

And I want my trains to run on time. That doesn't justify supporting Mussolini.

Does Romney really see Trump as Mussolini? Would you sit down and have an amicable dinner with Mussolini? Because Romney did.

Your rationalizations for the view that Romney could be playing some clever game to strike for the resistance and betray his own party are La La Land musings.

All we are seeing from Romney are excuses about why it is right and proper, and constitutional, and in accordance with precedent for the Republicans to do what they are doing, and here he is saying that, and also saying that in his view conservative judges are better at interpreting the constitution than the liberals who "look into the sky and pull out ideas that they think are more appropriate."

No, the Republicans will fall into line. There won't be a secret underground resistance among the Republican Senators.

Oh, absolutely. I'm saying it could happen, not that I'd put money on it happening for any odds.

A Senator's privilege and power derive directly from the voters in the state they represent. I doubt there's anything the Democrats can do for Romney that trumps the support of his state's lobbyists and party organizers.

The Supreme court issue is not one on which any Senator needs to base his/her vote on its possible effects on the election.

The Republicans can just vote on it after the election. Then they won't face election again for 2, 4, or 6 years, and can expect it not to matter anymore by then. They can go against the public's wishes all they want and have it all become irrelevant by election time as long as they keep it out of that narrow band of a few months right before an election. (How many people remember who did what about, for example, the anti-internet-neutrality law that the politicians passed with something like 6% approval in the general public?)

And the Democrats can just stick to their usual routine (as they're already planning to do again now) of putting up no resistance at all to the Republicans and still counting on the "yes they gave away everything to the Republicans again but technically they say they aren't Republicans" vote.

....

No, the point is that the current roster remains in the Senate until Jan. 3. That means that even senators whom the voters booted out on Nov. 3 will still be able to vote for Trump's nominee on their way out their door, even if the election turns the Senate Democratic. Do we want the next justice selected by a lame-duck Senate?
