Today on the radio in St. Louis.

From the Bad Astronomy/Universe Today Forum:

Folks-- I'll be "debating" Moon Hoax purveyor Bart Sibrel on the radio Monday at 5:00 central time. I'll have details on my blog on Monday morning. You'll be able to listen live to the thrashing as well.

Details (including hearing it over the Net) at:

Oh Dear...

This will be a verbal rear end whoopin' from the B.A. What the heck is Sibel going to present as "evidence"?

I'm guessing the "swear on the bible" trick may well get mentioned.
And the B.A. might bring up the "getting punched in the face by Buzz Aldrin" incident.

Kudos for my home town! We're not the embarrassment you thought we... well, we're not as bad as Kansas. Or Cincinatti.

I'll listen in. Good thing I spotted this. Only a half hour away.

Couldn't get Surfplayer to work, but maybe thats not a bad thing

Listening live, which isn't easy; tricky station to pick up.

In order to further his argument that NASA is too incompetent to have pulled off the moon landing, he's brought up recent Shuttle tragedies. Unbelievable. We've known after his last tussel (re: getting punched out) how crass he is, but this is just sad.

Missed it, of course. Anyone know when/where a copy goes up somewhere?

From your blog:

Radiation, the rocket, gravity, history, politics– he gets them all wrong.

Nope, Phil. He doesn't get them all wrong. He doesn't want to get them right.

I just wrote up my thoughts on it. It was... odd. Michael Shermer was on! That was a surprise.

Thanks for the link.

One of the comments after your summary caught my eye:
I do think we are fighting a losing battle here

The prevailing mood seems to be:

America is the source of all evil
The American government lies
You can not believe anything tthey say

You bring up the soviets only to get “Russia was bought off with wheat”

You mention other nations, but they were either in on it or too stupid to realise they were being hoaxed.

There is no convincing them
As they get more in the majority, we get the “how can you be so naive” comes at us, so the hoax theory survives and thrives on the desire not be be seen as someone who is a simpleton who swallows everything they are told.

Are there people who really believe that at the height of the cold war, in the middle of the space race, the Russians could have been bought off with wheat? And that they would keep their mouths shut for all these years?

I listened to the show. I think the moon hoax guy won; not because he had better arguments, but he talked loudest, fastest and longest. So he won.

And that is why the BA (and most skeptics/scientists) doesn't like to 'debate' a woo, because it often comes down to who talks louder, faster and interrupts the other.

In a "Formal" debate with time periods and rules and no interruptions allowed by your opponent, Phil would absolutley devastate B.S.--and he knows it and would never accept that kind of debate.

IMHO.
