Hang in there, Minoosh. After reading that, I had to take a couple of deep breaths myself. Be strong and empathetic, but remember that you don’t have to take any nonsense if it’s unhelpful to the situation.
That’s very kind of you. I think it’s the magical thinking that triggers me. I’m always bugging people to tell me why they believe whatever they believe. My aunt is religious (“God never gives us more than we can handle”-type religious) and my bro isn’t but just likes to trigger libs while working (of course) for a semi-governmental agency.

I have another brother who’s a left-wing conspiracy theorists and who knows what he believes - I’m afraid to ask.

So let's say we get the infection rate down to an 'acceptable' level, eg. 20,000 per day (the numbers we had just before opening up). How long before we reach 70%?

But some say we only need 40% to achieve 'herd immunity'. At 20,000 a day that would take 18 years. So there's nothing to worry about!
At a 0.75% fatality rate that would be (just) less than a million dead. Well worth it to some.

Riiiiiiight. Which is why people never kill themselves.

I've never understood that saying. It's one of the stupidest ever.

It's Christian Apologetics (no offense Minoosh).

Answers in Genesis
Answers in Genesis is an apologetics ministry, dedicated to helping Christians defend their faith and proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ effectively. We focus on providing answers to questions about the Bible—particularly the book of Genesis—regarding key issues such as creation, evolution, science, and the age of the earth.
You can even get a PhD in Christian Apologetics

At the top of the first page of your dissertation, you write “Hello , my name is Kent Hovind.”

:)

Hello, my name is Kent Hovind. I am a creation/science evangelist. I live in Pensacola, Florida. I have been a high school science teacher since 1976. I've been very active in the creation/evolution controversy for quite some time.

It wouldn't surprise me if he's gotten an honorary degree.

It's a worthless piece of paper. It might as well be written up by and be printed out on a home by him.

Patriot Bible University (PBU), formerly known as Patriot University, is an unaccredited Independent Baptist correspondence school located in Del Norte, Colorado[2] which issues religious degrees only.[3] According to the State of Colorado, Patriot's "degrees or diplomas have no state recognition"[4] PBU is not accredited by any agency recognized by the Department of Education.[5] It has been called a diploma mill, lacking sufficient academic standards to award degrees.[6][7]

I guess I understand why people might believe this, but it's never made sense to me.

But is it still apologetics if someone really believe something, vs. defending their grounds to do so?

I didn't like snapping at my aunt; IMO the two factions need to find some common ground. Re-openings, but gradually, with widespread acceptance of mask-wearing and social distancing. I'd love to learn techniques for fostering such dialogues. Even if you change only one mind at a time, that could add up.

It's more about feelings than rationality, if that helps it make sense more. I could delve further, but I think it would be a bit too OT.

An apologetic is the defense, itself. Being an apologist doesn't actually require believing the defense, though an apologist usually does, in practice, albeit not always for well thought out reasons.

It might be worth noting that humans are emotional creatures. Some of us are swayed more with rationality and logic, yes, but that's at our best. Possibly, the best thing that can be done, generally speaking, is make is clear that you're on their side and appealing to common values, when it comes to persuasiveness. That, admittedly, can be hard to do much of the time.

Religion is almost always about feelings rather than rationality with some exceptions. For example, some of the Ten Commandments deal more with rationality which make living within a community possible, etc. But, as you say, that is OT.

According to Gateway Pundit there's no need to panic. There have only been 9,000 deaths.

SHOCK REPORT: This Week CDC Quietly Updated COVID-19 Numbers – Only 9,210 Americans Died From COVID-19 Alone – Rest Had Different Other Serious Illnesses
So get this straight – based on the recommendation of doctors Fauci and Birx the US shut down the entire economy based on 9,000 American deaths to the China coronavirus.

“This week the CDC quietly updated the Covid number to admit that only 6% of all the 153,504 deaths recorded actually died from Covid
That's 9,210 deaths
The other 94% had 2-3 other serious illnesses & the overwhelming majority were of very advanced age”

Considering Trump's place in the polls in Florida and Arizona, "Let the old people die," seems like an odd strategy.

Bloomberg or Bezos or Gates someone else should have thought of that and bought up some or all of them. I’m serious. Why do anti-Trump billionaires never seem to anticipate the Trump administration’s maneuvers? A lot of BS could be neutralized with judiciously applied cash.

I've since read that Abbot is planning 50 million kits per month starting in October. I haven't seen anything else about the government buying the entire production after the first 150 million. Maybe then they will go into general circulation.

It is so sad that we even have to consider these possibilities. In a sane world, we would know that it was some variation, as you described, of a purchase guarantee that was intended to make sure that an important product was delivered quickly as part of a coordinated strategy for saving lives and allowing people to safely resume something very much like normal life.

Instead, we have the Trump administration.

I know right? If Bush or Obama were president and someone said what I said about buying the test kits, I'd have called them a conspiracy theorist. Instead, It's a perfectly rational concern, especially after what came out about the Kushner boy and his testing plans.
