Cont: The Trump Presidency: Part 24

No mention of Hermann Cain at the RNC convention, despite dying recently and being a fairly high profile MAGA person.

I suppose dying of covid is a betrayal in these circles.

Whatever you want to call it is ok by me. I'm not always up-to-date on the current 'right speak' as I do not normally see social media interactions except second hand.
I'm not prescribing "right speak". I pointed out non-communitive language. If we can apply the expression to anything, it means nothing.

The intentions of the walk out are certainly good (I think). I believe these players are genuine in their actions.

I just do not think it will be very effective. I can actually see it having the opposite effect.

That is my opinion and does not expand to anyone or any group outside of my own brain. I may also change my mind, as happens when I get new info or some new perspective.
I'm still allowed to do that, right?
No. I'm dictating what's permitted and what is not.

Re: Cancelling NBA games to protest racial injustice...
Many people (even dedicated fans) don't bother watching things like that. And if they are a MAGAchud? Even if they did like to watch after-game shows, they would probably turn it off once the player started talking politics.
....
Not every fan cares enough to read up on player opinions. They care about the game itself, and things that directly impact the game.

It brings attention to the situation.

If they decided to keep their protests to after-game shows and magazine articles, it would likely be forgotten rather quickly.
In times of great strife people need some outlet.
The problem in this case is that the issue of racial injustice is not some external event impacting the U.S. Its internal. And it requires significant changes to society... for the cops to change their tactics and priorities, for voters to pressure their elected officials to make changes, etc.

In other words, its not some sort of military invasion or natural disaster that people must simply endure (where sports will help them survive)... it requires things to be fixed.

If those people want to quit to cause 'awareness' even after years of constant 'awareness'
"I don't think that the law enforcement system is systemically racist"
- William Barr....

Looks like not everyone is aware.

There is widespread ignorance regarding racial issues... and it starts at the top, with Stubby McBonespurs.
then I think the sport will suffer.
And if nothing is done to address racial problems, minorities will suffer. Which is worse, that the NBA/NFL loses out in ratings/fan attendance, or that some african American is killed by police?

Many are isolated without family near.
Yes they are. But they need more than "Here's some sports to distract you".

What you're suggesting is a band-aid solution... "things suck for you... here's something so you can pretend they don't suck, but we won't actually fix anything".

Its Bread and circuses

Oh, and by the way... yes, there are isolated people... but there are also millions of relatively well-off middle class voters, with homes and families and decent jobs. For them, sports is a luxury.

Last thought on the Rose Garden.

Trump pulls **** like this because he knows the Dems aren’t organized enough to prioritize their complaints. He knows that digging up trees planted by First Ladies more than 60 years ago upsets the liberals. In fact, it upsets them enough that they stop talking about his firing inspector generals (that’s something that needs to be in the top ten).
Maybe its a bad political decision, maybe its not.

Here's the thing... the democrats can't really do anything to stop Trump from firing inspector generals...regardless of how many hearings they have on it. Senate republicans will simply do everything they can to protect him. And will voters care? Well, hard to say... ~40% of the voters have stuck with trump through all his abuses of power, so one more abuse isn't going to make a difference.

Maybe pointing out the changes to the rose garden might have an effect... Older voters who may remember JFK might actually be negatively affected by seeing one of the legacies of previous presidents discarded like that.

Republicans are popular among hispanics who's ancestors lost their slaves or plantations during the revolution and fled the country before they could get lined up on a wall. Less so than those descended from slaves or desperately poor classes.

Republicans are popular among Catholics, which is a prevalent religion among hispanics. Don't underestimate the religious angle here.

Trump Tweets

Success: Since the National Guard moved into Kenosha, Wisconsin, two days ago, there has been NO FURTHER VIOLENCE, not even a small problem. When legally asked to help by local authorities, the Federal Government will act and quickly succeed. Are you listening Portland?

It's perhaps worth pointing out the same thing that AOC did - the basketball thing isn't a boycott. The players aren't customers, they're workers. It's a strike.

Overnight ratings for the fourth and final night of the conventions.

Six networks combined (FNC/CNN/MSNBC/ABC/CBS/NBC). Ratings are for the duration of each nominee’s speech:
Democratic / Biden - 17.5
Republican / Trump - 14.1

Gap between Biden and Harris overnight ratings (8%) was quite a bit less than the gap between Trump and Pence ratings (34%).
Trump’s speech, the longest acceptance speech in history, did not appear to have any impact on viewership. Looking at overnight ratings by quarter hour, the ratings held basically steady throughout.

Top-rated markets for President Trump’s acceptance speech last night:
West Palm - 18.9
Memphis - 18.9
Nashville - 18.6
Las Vegas - 18.1
Salt Lake - 18.0
San Antonio - 17.3
Pittsburgh - 17.2
Dallas - 16.9
Cincinnati - 16.8
Atlanta - 16.6

Top markets for Vice President Biden’s acceptance speech last week:
New York - 23.1
San Francisco - 23.1
West Palm - 21.7
Washington - 20.9
Philadelphia - 19.5
San Diego - 19.3
Seattle - 19.0
Denver - 19.0
Chicago - 18.9
Baltimore - 18.9

The NBA just announced that all basketball arenas will he turned into 2020 voting locations.

I just do not think it will be very effective. I can actually see it having the opposite effect.

The problem is, you can (and people have) made that same argument about every form of protest ever used. Thus, it's a non-argument.

No one protest, or even form of protest, will suddenly turn on a light and convince everyone to suddenly stop being so racist. But the full mass of every protest might finally wake some people up enough to finally decide to support change, if only to get people to shut up.

I’m a Brit, living in Malaysia. I don’t have a clue who this guy is. I just made a joke based on his ignorant statement, given which countries were fighting ‘socialism’ during the Second World War.

Did you seriously think I believed that an American politician would be boasting about his father’s service in the Wehrmacht?!

Ah. Apologies. I failed to notice your location and didn't realize you're not American. You'd be amazed how ignorant some Americans are of history. Or maybe not. After all, it was an American politician who actually made that ridiculous statement in the first place proving my point.

I made it through essentially the whole acceptance speech*.

Immediately afterwards, Rachel Maddow did a rapid fire fact check on it. Likely not all inclusive, but hit the main lies pretty effectively.

*I walked the dogs about 3/4 of the way through. I have a feeling I didn’t miss much.

I bet the dogs delivered less crap than Trump did.

Trump prefers supporters who don't die.

Probably a bit gauche to bring it up at an event so crowded, it's practically a guarantee there will be covid fatalities of attendees as a direct result.

ETA: At least there was a fireworks show this time. Cain dying so he could attend that lame Trump rally is probably up there in the rankings of "least worth it" avoidable deaths.

I'd guess that every single member of that crowd has been repeatedly tested for Covid-19 over an extended period and they have possibly been asked to isolate for a period before the rally. They are probably very low risk.

One of the reporters said only people close to Trump were being tested. The press was not being tested.

Ninja'd again. :)
