It is not about literal bananas, but about form of government. Rampant corruption, crony capitalism and appearance of various el presidentos for life "winning" elections with 99% of votes. Some of them are humbler and settle for 80.10%.

In same vein I call Russia biggest banana republic of the world. El presidento on top and his oligarchic cronies funneling billions from entire country to their pockets. Opposition getting shot in back, brutal suppression of protests, mysterious accidents happening to those that dare to speak wrongly, you know, the usual in totalitarian countries.

Basically, wet dream of republicans. No wonder they are so chummy with Ruskies.

If true, that might actually be more representative of the current state of the GOP than the Trump-heavy list of 'key' speakers.

Kimberly Guilfoyle, who is in charge of fundraising, but appears to be incompetent and/or in over her head (with accusations of mismanagement... not to mention a lack of empathy, after she and Trump Jr. left several staff members stranded in a strange city with no way home).

That would probably be... an unwise move.

After Biden's speech was fairly well received (even by some Fox news people), Trump now has a higher bar.

So either: 1) he delivers the speech from a teleprompter, which tends to make him look lethargic (and often results in various mis-pronounced words), or 2) he goes off script, which makes him look like an idiot.

And if he's speaking multiple times, it means even more chances of something going wrong.
 
Or 3) he comes up with some kindergarten-level excuse to not speak.
"I don't wanna do the presentation, my tummy hurts and the teachers are unfair!"
 
I don't see any way his handlers let Trump go off script, but even if he does, he is gonna speak every night to adulation from republicans, drooling veneration from his sycophants, and just enough "yeah, he did all right" from moderates to give him a nice convention bump.

I'd love to be wrong about this. He obstructed justice, was impeached, totally botched the US response to the pandemic, continues to promote both debunked and whack-job therapeutics, yet still enjoys a 50% approval rating. This on top of his racism, his misogyny, his demonizing any media critical of him, his absolute inability to admit error, and his overarching narcissism. I was hopeful just a month ago when some polls showed growing disapproval, but he seems to have bounced back. This thing is going to be neck and neck in states where that will be to his advantage.

Like I said, I'd love to be wrong, and that all this gloom is just a product of a cynical view of politics, and a pessimistic view of my fellow citizens doing the right thing with this garbage human being.

Of course he is not concerned about his performance. Everything he does is the best it has er been done.
