Cont: The Trump Presidency: Part 24

I happened upon a quote involving Melania back when she was known as Melania Knauss, a New York-based model. I don't have a link; I read this probably six months ago but it still comes to mind.

A woman who worked in the modeling industry -- not a model, someone on the business side -- said, "Yes I recall her." She said Melania was not top tier because, "She was stiff, almost robotic." That she went on to be fairly successful in what was essentially soft-core porn. Below are two images from her 'plane shoot.' (Don't ask; I have no clue.)

Can this whole episode get any stranger? Assuming we somehow manage to regain our democracy, can you imagine how history is going to look at all this fifty years from now?
As Trump is a coward's idea of a tough guy, Melania is a MAGA idea of a classy woman.

trump is just wearing everyone down including the news media. Especially the news media. Here is a quote from yesterday, taken from an official White House transcript. trump was speaking at an official event in Yuma, Arizona.
We put up 18 miles in San Diego, as an example, right opposite Tijuana. And Tijuana is probably the worst place in South America, in terms of the China virus. It’s — I think it is the worst place. And San Diego is not suffering at all because of it. So it’s — I mean, it’s an incredible thing that happened. Link to White House transcript
In addition to being incredible --"San Diego is not suffering at all" (because of trump) -- it's totally false. Another one of trump's never-ending series of false claims and outright lies. But it seems he's worn everyone down. This latest false claim only seems to have been reported in passing. This is what was being reported tonight by the Fox News affiliate in San Diego:
As San Diego County continues to await guidance on the effects of its removal from the state’s coronavirus watchlist, public health officials reported 212 new COVID-19 cases and five additional deaths Wednesday, raising the region’s totals to 35,376 cases and 638 deaths. Link to Fox San Diego

As the chart below illustrates -- from San Diego County Emergency Operations Center -- San Diego has made a lot of progress. But how does more than 35,000 cases and 638 deaths compute to San Diego didn't suffer "at all?" It's demeaning to the families of every one of those 638 people who passed away. Not that trump or his supporters would care.

And in addition to that, his claims about Tijuana being so much worse off appear to be ******** too.

I can't find current numbers, but when he made the same claim in June, several people fact-checked him, and it was BS then:

Unless there's been an unprecedented surge in cases in the last month, his claims about Tijuana are crap.

Not that this will shock anyone here.

Actually a good corporate manager with a willingness to listen to advisors, to make decisions based on facts instead of one’s gut, and to put the country’s interest ahead of his own might make a pretty good president.

Of course, President Trump’s idea of good business management is so twisted, perverted, and corrupt that the country was doomed from the start.
Trump has been an atrocious business manager as well as an atrocious president. Always has been, and always had to be rescued by smarter people. Everything Trump touches dies.

I cannot think of a single characteristic of DJT that would useful for a president.

But then again, I cannot think of a single characteristic of DJT that would be useful for Any productive member of society.

Not gonna happen. Postal Union will crap kittens and the Democrats won't take on a Union.

There's no reason to take a shot at the union. How the Post Office operates, particularly the long-term health care funding requirements, are largely set by Congress. There's a limit to what the union can do for or against anything. They certainly don't want to lose their jobs or see their employer go under.

In 2006, Congress passed a law that imposed extraordinary costs on the U.S. Postal Service. The Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act (PAEA) required the USPS to create a $72 billion fund to pay for the cost of its post-retirement health care costs, 75 years into the future. This burden applies to no other federal agency or private corporation.

Meanwhile, the management is dismantling the mail sorting machines.

The great thing about telling lies is that they're so easy. You don't have to prove them. You don't have to put any time or effort into them. On the other hand, it takes time and effort to debunk them. Trump can spout lie after lie after lie and by the time the press or anyone else has debunked them, Trump has moved on to several others. Trump know this and, boy, does he make use of it.

Is this even legal for a president? Scandalous behavior it is. Have you become immune to this kind of thing?

For a politician to say something like this would be political suicide in my neck of the woods.

Hans

IIRC, the generally relevant law to this concept is the Hatch Act. IIRC, the Hatch Act has an exception for the President, specifically. Also, the Trump Administration is not even remotely enforcing the Hatch Act, anyways.

We're talking about funding some 75 years into the future here, not anything re current pensions. Are you sure the union cares that much?

I'm opportunistically using SG's post here to point to a politifact link on the general subject of the funding. Also, this tidbit is something that usually doesn't make its way into the discussion -

In congressional testimony last year, Postal Service board member David Williams said the pre-funding requirement has been "devastating" not only because it limited other spending, but also because it "wiped out our entire ability to make capital investments" to modernize.

Either way, the USPS would very likely still be in financial trouble because of the pandemic without that law, but it would have been turning a profit at least until 2018 even under the current sabotage, if the pre-funding costs are removed from the equation.

To poke at further Post Office news -

DeJoy tells Pelosi he has 'no intention' of undoing Postal Service sabotage already done

Pretty self explanatory.

Elsewhere... Trump has now openly praised QAnon.

Anyone surprised?

Miles Taylor dropped another little bomb -

The president has talked before about wanting to purchase Greenland, but one time before we went down he told us, not only did he want to purchase Greenland, he actually said he wanted to see if we could sell Puerto Rico — could we swap Puerto Rico for Greenland, because in his words Puerto Rico was dirty and the people were poor. These are Americans, Hallie. We don’t talk about our fellow Americans that way. And the fact that the president of the United States wanted to take a U.S. territory of Americans and swap it for a foreign country is beyond galling. This was a real thing.

Still unsurprising, given Trump.

ICE agents in Miami forced Muslim detainees to choose between spoiled food or pork

Yet more atrocities committed by ICE.

In a slight change of pace - There's a bunch that's somewhat mind-bogglingly wrong with the Florida State Democratic Party... even so, looks like one of the very bad Democratic representatives has lost their primary to a seemingly decent person despite the State party's support, so that is a bit of good news.

Also, for those who feel like it, here's a somewhat arbitrary take on The Best Moments of DemConvention Day 3

She married Donald Trump. That doesn't speak well for her character in any way whatsoever.

I have to wonder if she often questions whether or not marrying him was worth it. She lives in gold, so I'm sure such moments are fleeting.

Um maybe. A lot of such laws that make it illegal for say lower government officials to do this specifically do not apply to the president. And the only response to it would either be impeachment or a meaningless censure vote.

In any other presidency this would cause a major scandal but we have a new normal.

I'm not sure. I think if Bush did the same thing, he may have gotten away with it. It appears to be a "it's okay if it's a Republican" thing.

Well, whatever that says of her character, I think you are right. If she has her contract half right, she can dump Trump at some point and live comfortably for the rest of her life. And, if that isn't too far in the future, she will still have the looks to find some other rich man.

But, who cares? She is unimportant. She does not seem to take any part in Donald's shenanigans, and devoid of charisma, she is hardly a big asset for him in the eyes of his voters.

Are you saying "I don't care, do you ?" ;)
