No, it's based on the idea that black people have traditionally struggled for equality in the US regardless of their ancestors' origins or status.

That's the sad part of this. Have any of the internal divisions within the Democrats been resolved in the past 4 years? Will they be given another 4 years? At least if a progressive candidate had been put forward there would be the possibility of the "socialists are unelectable" question being put to bed for a bit.

There are different audiences here. One audience will certainly see this in the collectivist identitarian way you describe, others will see the story in the individualist terms Captain_Swoop is describing. I guess the key question is which audience has more undecided people available to be won over.

I wouldn't have said so. I think Captain_Swoop was saying that Kamala personally is descended from a rich slave owning family and that this makes it a little awkward for her if she wants to present herself as some kind of avatar for black people struggling with the legacy of slavery.
