Just a little nightmare scenario for you.

1 Trump will be seen as saviour by a lot of people for issuing the exec order on payment. They will see McConnell thanking Trump and blame the Dems for the delay.

2 Covid has peaked in USA, and rates will continue to fall, at least until the election. He will be smugly claiming to have been right all along.

3 The Dow & NASDAQ will set new records, thereby allowing Trump to praise himself over it.

4 Unemployment will drop by massive amounts by November, allowing him another easy victory to trumpet.

5 Biden stays doing the responsible thing, masked up at home as Trump recommences cheering rallies.

6 Four more years.
#1 yes. I posted something similar in the Biden for POTUS thread.

#2-4: No.

#5 is BS for multiple reasons.

#6: too soon to be so doom and gloom.

Googling "the most useless material on Earth", I discovered:

Protactinium (91)

Highly radioactive and toxic. Virtually useless. Mostly important for sitting there and doing nothing for many, many years. Seems appropriate for the task at hand.

Depends on the specific isotope of Protactinium. Pa233 devolves into U233 which is fissionable. That is quite useful.

This isn't what Trump has been presenting it as...quelle surprise. People are going to be pretty damn mad if they never get it.

It is an open question how many people will receive the $400 weekly benefit, which is one-third less than the $600 previously provided by the federal government, and how long it might take to arrive. Trump’s executive order seems to leave it up to the states to decide whether to participate and also asks them to cover 25%, or $100, of the cost, a major hurdle when their budgets are already under severe strain.
White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow on Sunday insisted the first checks could come “in a couple of weeks,” but acknowledged that the administration had yet to fully canvass the states to see if they would be able to afford their payment share. Kudlow also allowed that the executive action could wind up in court. Several lawmakers have questioned the legality of the orders, which bypass legislation that would need to be approved by Congress. On Saturday, Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., called the theory behind the executive orders “unconstitutional slop.”

Never mind that it ISN'T even close to CONSTITUTIONAL.

This isn't close to being true. No evidence it has peaked.

What does the stock market mean to people unemployed? What this proves more than anything is the market has little to do with the average joe's economic well being.
4 Unemployment will drop by massive amounts by November, allowing him another easy victory to trumpet.
This seems like wishful thinking.
5 Biden stays doing the responsible thing, masked up at home as Trump recommences cheering rallies.
This has little effect on people that are undecided. But we'll see.
6 Four more years.
You just made me throw up in my mouth. Yep, that's a nightmare.

Trump Tweets

CONGRATS to General Dynamic’s Bath Iron Works & Local S6 on reaching a tentative agreement after the long strike. GD builds GREAT Arleigh-Burke destroyers. Super boost for Maine Economy. Glad to have helped. I’ve done a lot for Maine!

Another forum I frequent had a thread entitled "Worst GPD Drop Since Great Depression, and the Market Barely Notices", discussing whether the stock market has any connection to the real world economy anymore.

Seems Trump caved already. Was just interviewd leaving New Jersey, says that he’d be willing to open negotiations again for COVID relief, says federal government has option to fully fund the $400 unemployment aid if states can’t contribute.

Nah, he's not a ******* narcissist.

2 Covid has peaked in USA
No. I wish, but no.

5 Biden stays doing the responsible thing, masked up at home as Trump recommences cheering rallies.
I'm not sure how many more rallies he will be able to hold, or if they will help him more than they will hurt him. Drinking water with both hands, failing to close an umbrella, struggling to walk in a straight line or down a ramp, holding a rally to a tiny, yawning audience, sitting there bragging about having to take a 'really difficult' dementia test, 'inspecting' his bunker during a protest near the White House, sitting down for an interview with graphs he clearly didn't understand like a school boy sitting an exam too advanced for him, and the list goes on.

These embarrassements and humiliations are growing more frequent, and will continue to do so as November approaches and his health continues to decline, and they will become harder and harder for his base to ignore.

Granted, I'm pretty sure much of the 40% core will just say "yes but Biden" and remain by his side, but his strongman image is a big part of his persona, and all kinds of showing weakness is detrimental to that image. The Secret Service taking him down to the bunker during the protests would hardly have raised headlines at all had it been Clinton or Obama. Maybe Bush, given his militaristic persona.

I doubt this is Trump's design, someone else is doing it for him but this is very calculated.

The states that don't participate, Trump will claim are the Democratic controlled states.

He's slipping in the sabotage of Social Security by stealth. People hear payroll tax cut, they don't hear that's what funds Social Security. And for those that do hear 'funds SS', there's a back up: it's only temporary. Except if we reelected Trump he'd make it as permanent as he could.

Gawd, think how much trouble we'd be in had we'd not taken the House back.

This is a surprise:
On Saturday, Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., called the theory behind the executive orders “unconstitutional slop.”
And his seat is apparently safe.

Trump has already attacked him:

"RINO Ben Sasse, who needed my support and endorsement in order to get the Republican nomination for Senate from the GREAT State of Nebraska, has, now that he’s got it (Thank you President T), gone rogue, again," Trump wrote in a tweet.

Would be hilarious if the anti-Trump conservatives banded together and formed a third party with the rhino as their mascot.

Never mind that it ISN'T even close to CONSTITUTIONAL.

How many people do you think know that, or even better, care? The constitution is only sacred when it's the 2nd amendment.

This isn't close to being true. No evidence it has peaked.

There is, actually. The 7-day average has gone down by 21% in the past two weeks. I'd say that's past the peak.

This seems like wishful thinking.

Nope - unemployment will drop like a stone. As America opens up, the jobs will come back and unemployment will reduce by 2/3 or more from current levels.

Another forum I frequent had a thread entitled "Worst GPD Drop Since Great Depression, and the Market Barely Notices", discussing whether the stock market has any connection to the real world economy anymore.

I've covered this extensively in the economics thread - the market is being driven by Robinhood and similar App-based platforms. Small volumes by the ignorant can make a big difference to the sharemarket. 20 million people putting in $20 a week is $400M to invest in shares*, and there aren't enough sellers to kill that off.

Bloomberg found that a lot of sports betting money was being diverted to the sharemarket as well. That's a billion a year on its own.

*I'd be surprised if the volume wasn't a lot higher.

Wow, Trump really wants his mug on Mount Rushmore. This article made me happy because I know he will eventually die knowing he's not going to be on Mt Rushmore (personally, I think we should dynamite the whole thing).

Why do you think he will die knowing he is not going to be on Mt. Rushmore?

Why do you thank anyone could convince him of that fact?

.............

If I were senior WH staff, I’d love to go to him and say that there isn’t enough useable rock on either end, but [SottoVoce] we could carve away one of the current presidents for your image. That is, if your willing to replace one of them with you. The engineers say that all four have useable rock, so you’d have to pick one. Do you have any immediate ideas?[/SottoVoce]

And Pelosi is missing a great opportunity. She could go to Trump and say, “if you sign this bill that you’ve spoken against, then we will allocate $2,000,000 to do a feasibility study on adding a face to Mt. Rushmore.”

With respect, I think that's the same wishful thinking that AGW deniers use when they look at the graphs and think the world is about to cool again.

The rest of the world is bracing for a second wave, so should the USA. Only it's not really done with the first, and now with schools opening, they'll probably see an increase in cases.

Also, isn't two weeks way too short a time to determine this?

Whether the federal government has that option is debatable (in light of the "power of the purse", the best defence against despotism), who's to judge which states can't contribute and which are governed by Democrats and could but won't? I think we know who it is in Trump's mind.

If his head goes on Rushmore, I'm opening an RPG kiosk catering to tourists. For those visitors seeking a high adrenaline challenge, rent-a-zambaruk. I hope the attraction doesn't fade once his pucker is reduced to rubble.
