Even so, it's the kind of thing that should take the wind out of their sails, at least momentarily. I wouldn't expect that, alone, to get them to reverse course, of course, especially when that is just negating their argument, rather than giving them a more attractive narrative to seize onto. I say attractive, because truth is generally not what their beliefs tend to be centered around. Grasping onto counterfactual conspiracy theories, for example, tends to be more about propping up one's self-esteem, at last check, for example.

He's trying to adjust his message to account for the incident, clumsily, and coming across as defensive. Most importantly, I think, he actually realises he failed to shine on that occasion, which will prey on his mind at least until somebody is punished for it, and probably beyond.

Nothing's more subjective than "should". The subjects in this case may well think you should get more educated, because all your points have already been debunked. Some guy on Fox said so.
 
I have to give Trump credit for something...He tweeted condolences on John Lewis's passing. And the White House flew its flag at half staff.

Exactly, and as co-workers them maintaining a decent level of self esteem is critical to job performance. So just some places I tend not to push too far or go at all with them. While with one we do tend to have good natured debates about his various counterfactual conspiracy theories. Usually initiated by him asking me about the science of some aspect of them. The other, his conspiratorial leanings tend to go mostly to personal experiences so even if he was to initiate a discussion, which does rarely happen, the most i can do is just relate my own personal experiences that are relevant. Mostly, other than the job, we just talk about cars, motorcycles and home repair.
