Now this is Trump trying to coverup his Fox interview faux pas.
Exactly.

Well, that line of reasoning would work on you and would work on me, but you don’t seriously think that would work on anyone still in Trump’s camp, do you?
He's trying to adjust his message to account for the incident, clumsily, and coming across as defensive. Most importantly, I think, he actually realises he failed to shine on that occasion, which will prey on his mind at least until somebody is punished for it, and probably beyond. Now this is Trump trying to coverup his Fox interview faux pas.
Nothing's more subjective than "should". The subjects in this case may well think you should get more educated, because all your points have already been debunked. Some guy on Fox said so.Even so, it's the kind of thing that should take the wind out of their sails, at least momentarily.
That's proof he's not racist. But wait till he puts his foot in it, which he will.I have to give Trump credit for something...He tweeted condolences on John Lewis's passing. And the White House flew its flag at half staff.

Even so, it's the kind of thing that should take the wind out of their sails, at least momentarily. I wouldn't expect that, alone, to get them to reverse course, of course, especially when that is just negating their argument, rather than giving them a more attractive narrative to seize onto. I say attractive, because truth is generally not what their beliefs tend to be centered around. Grasping onto counterfactual conspiracy theories, for example, tends to be more about propping up one's self-esteem, at last check, for example.
People who are certain they are going to heaven would rather die than admit they were wrong.

Trump says Confederate flag represents "freedom".
"The Republican president was asked on "Fox News Sunday," if the flag, considered a symbol of slavery and oppression by most Americans, was offensive.
"It depends on who you're talking about, when you're talking about," Trump responded. "When people proudly had their Confederate flags they're not talking about racism. They love their flag, it represents the South. They like the South ... I say it's freedom of many things, but it's freedom of speech."
We're signing a health care plan within two weeks. A full and complete health care plan, that the Supreme Court decision on DACA gave me the right to do
I missed this. What's he done this time? Now this is Trump trying to coverup his Fox interview faux pas.
