Cont: The Trump Presidency: Part 23

Stifling attempts to promote postal voting is another and who knows what shennanigans they are planning on polling day but I expect long lines and problems with the voting technology in certain neighbourhoods.

I've also seen rumblings that because of voter fraud upstanding citizens will need to do their part at polling stations, which appears to be code for "we want people with automatic weapons there to intimidate minority voters away".

Not actually so astounding, honestly, in light of the long, long lasting and unscrupulous campaigns to concentrate wealth and power into the hands of a very few, too many of whom are pretty much sociopaths.

To poke elsewhere, though...

Federal Law Enforcement Use Unmarked Vehicles To Grab Protesters Off Portland Streets

Nothing good can come of this. Backlash to it, maybe, but not from it directly.

GAO report confirms border officials ignored CDC recommendation to give kids flu shots

And... the usual. Border Patrol isn't acting in an upright manner at all.

Yes, I had started a separate thread on that:

I can't verify the video, but if it's true - is this action constitutional?

There seems no way of identifying the officers - no ID numbers that I could see, just "Police" patches.

Lots more video evidence now

Did Trump just tell the country that anyone who wants to can point loaded guns at him, and not be prosecuted?

It doesn't, and I never claimed that it does.

President Trump appears to have a rock-solid 40% of the electorate who support him no matter what.

60% of the electorate currently don't approve of his performance as President but not all of them are going to vote, and not all of them would vote Democrat even if they do vote. Some may be persuaded to vote GOP even though they don't approve of the candidate, some will vote for a third party (Green, Libertarian or even Constitution Party) but the biggest risk is that a much greater proportion of Trump supporters vote than people aren't Trump supporters.

In the latest national poll of likely voters, Biden leads Trump 50.3% - 41.2%

Perhaps more importantly, Biden leads Trump in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Arizona.

Trump Elevates Stepien to Campaign Manager, Replacing Parscale by Misyrlena Egkolfopoulou, Bloomberg News

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that Bill Stepien would replace
Brad Parscale as campaign manager as the president seeks to reverse
a decline in the polls before the November election.

“I am pleased to announce that Bill Stepien has been promoted to the role
of Trump campaign manager,” Trump said in a statement. “Brad Parscale,
who has been with me for a very long time and has led our tremendous
digital and data strategies, will remain in that role, while being a senior
adviser to the campaign.”

It's the hardest job you'll ever love to hate.

You spend your days in a windowless office talking to no one all day while
forms drop out of a slot next to your desk into a box. You take each one out
check the boxes on the form, stamp it, then drop it into another slot on the
other side of the desk.

I think Trump changes campaign managers as often as he changes hats.

U.S. Party Preferences Have Swung Sharply Toward Democrats by Jeffrey M. Jones

Since January, Americans' party preferences have shifted dramatically in
the Democratic Party's direction. What had been a two-percentage-point
Republican advantage in U.S. party identification and leaning has become
an 11-point Democratic advantage, with more of that movement reflecting
a loss in Republican identification and leaning (down eight points) than a
gain in Democratic identification and leaning (up five points).

Currently, half of U.S. adults identify as Democrats (32%) or
are independents who lean toward the Democratic Party (18%).
Meanwhile, 39% identify as Republicans (26%) or are Republican
leaners (13%). These results are based on monthly averages of
Gallup U.S. telephone surveys in 2020.

Pretty impressive.

I suspect Biden will reach 53% during the conventions in August, then
decline slightly from there when he gets into the presidential debates
with Trump.

I suspect it's this video which I posted elsewhere

Gee - a long link to twitter, again with no summary of what I can expect at the link which I CANNOT VIEW because it's to twitter. I'll hunt for it myself when I have time. Blue Mountain's link project is looking more relevant than ever here.

Thanks JoeMorgue. Hadn't seen those letters before, thought it might be an advocacy group or something.

Astounding that a minority (a sizable one, though) of credulous deplorables is effectively holding the country hostage, mindlessly racking up the misery and death because they have bought into the politicization of what is in their own best interest.

Impatience and selfishness are the creed of too many Americans. They can't even make a small sacrifice of 4-8 weeks in order to come out ahead of a viral pandemic. They can't absorb the lesson provided by virtually the entire world. They falsely think their benighted Nation, ordained by God, is unique, bestowed a manifest destiny, immune from the scourges that afflict others. The hubris accompanying global greatness has rendered in just a few generations a societal sickness that bespeaks and precedes a decline.

The current "greatness" ofthe USA on the world stage derives principally from economic power and a preeminent military (bought at huge, arguably ruinous cost). In areas of justice, racial equality, education, access to medical services, wealth inequity, the ownership of the political class by corporations and the rich, worker rights, the proportion of the populace in jail, crumbling infrastructure, the hosting to power of a psychopathic criminal, etc., etc., it may not be too much of an exaggeration to class her a ******** country.

Made all the more obvious by the kind of bumbling idiocy that has now forced the world to close their doors against the plague carriers.

Yes. Well stated. That's it. Right on.

[cries]

Well at least the number of foreigners who always thought the US was full of itself and are now justified in dancing on our grave in glee are increasing.

I had to check on the worst case scenario - absolutely no other source of information except what the OrangeIdiot allows - and those fears have been allayed (at least for now). My county is relatively isolated (and that helps in this case), and I called county public health and they confirmed that the information on their web site about covid-19 cases, deaths, hospitalizations, by city, age, etc., is totally a county operation. I'd expect that, but I just wanted to make sure.

This means that, if every county in the country can get its own data, then it should be possible to create a stream of actually accurate data county by county, state by state.

I guess I freaked out a bit at first about the possibility of not even have accurate information about how the pandemic is going in my local community, but I would forgive a lot of freak-outs by others, given the absolute s***-show we are in.

Sure. But it's turnout and voting station availability etc. where we get killed on election day.
There's no lock on this thing yet. [emoji21]
I'm pretty sure that's not an exhaustive list of the ********** that can be perpetrated on our democracy between now and Nov. 3 (and *after* Nov. 3, for that matter). However, I'm not sure I want to see an exhaustive list, one can only take so much.

And Ginsburg's cancer is back. She's back undergoing Chemo.

Let's not cut it any closer America. We're already pretty much down to half a Supreme Court justice being the only thing between us and a pure dictatorship.

If she dies/steps down between now and November, McConnell will rush a toady Trump appointee through the system while the Democrats scream about him being a hypocrite as if that matters or he cares.

Is it time to rethink leaving so much vital power in the withered claws of the extremely old? Being run by a council of elders may have worked in the Neolithic, but perhaps it's time for a rethink.
