Cont: The Trump Presidency: Part 23

ETA: I see this has been covered already. But I'll leave this here because the mere idea of crediting Trump makes me ROYALLY PISSED.
OK, OK, I get it. I elaborate above on my statement. IF he would get out of the way I WOULD give him credit for that.

That would involve keeping the CDC as the point agency for collating data provided it's doing the job right.

Yes, I know that. But I'm not going to hope for a failure just because it might help Trump. What I really hope is happening is that competent federal bureaucrats, Congress critters, state politicians and the world health-care apparatus are going full-tilt to gather information and fight the epidemic without worrying too much about what Trump thinks. But if he's strenuously encouraging suppressing data, then **** him. I wish he'd just get out of the way. That would show real leadership but he might not be capable of it.
If they are, then they're sure doing one hell of a job.

Let's get real. Trump made this pandemic about him from the start. He politicized it immediately and it's made Republicans not only uncooperative with safety measures (resulting in increased spread of the virus) but dismissive of even the idea that the virus/disease is a real problem at all.

Yeah, there are scientists working on treatment/future prevention, but our governments, state and federal, even those run by majority Democrats, have little influence in the face of a recalcitrant mob of right-wing morons who won't get with the program or even acknowledge that we need a program at all. There's no way to stem the tide without near-complete citizen cooperation.

Well it's clear she meant 'science isn't saying otherwise', she corrected herself. Now that's not true, but twisting the claim this way is not fair.

Fair? Do you think these people deserve the benefit of the doubt? And I'm not so sure she doesn't mean exactly what she said.

Fair? Do you think these people deserve the benefit of the doubt? And I'm not so sure she doesn't mean exactly what she said.

Then you only took that one sentence without its context. She repeats several times science is supporting opening schools. This one sentence is said in bad way, but nothing more. That's the issue with Trump opposition most of the time. The guy killed thousands by his inaction, yet people are catching him on words.

Actually, now listening it again .. I think it's possible Trump said that and meant that, and she's wrapping it exact opposite. That would be quite bold of spokesman, but not unheard of.

Then you only took that one sentence without its context. She repeats several times science is supporting opening schools.
.....

But that itself is a lie. Even Trump's CDC doesn't say that. SecEdu DeVos couldn't provide a plan for reopening schools safely. The story says Kayleigh's science source is a Fox news commentator.

As David Abramson, a professor of social and behavioral sciences at NYU’s School of Global Public Health, explains, getting kids back in classrooms means that students “will serve as potential vectors back into the community.” But at the same time, “it’s almost impossible to imagine not opening schools given all that is at stake. And so it’s like a devil’s bargain.”

It’s probably no surprise then that there’s no clear consensus among health experts about schools reopening. In late June, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued a recommendation that school administrators aim to have children “physically present in school” for the next school year. Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention maintains that virtual-only classes are the lowest risk option for schooling. And while some countries, including Denmark, Austria, and Germany have had success in reopening schools, other countries, including Israel and Japan, and South Korea, have opened and re-closed schools after seeing a surge in new cases.

Trump Tweets

Another one of many Fake T.V. Ads, this one about the Tennessee Valley Authority, which for years has paid its top executive a ridiculous FORTUNE. Not run by the U.S., but I have long been fighting that crazy “salary” & its polices. Strange ad paid for (?) by “U.S. Tech Workers”.

Astounding that a minority (a sizable one, though) of credulous deplorables is effectively holding the country hostage, mindlessly racking up the misery and death because they have bought into the politicization of what is in their own best interest.

Impatience and selfishness are the creed of too many Americans. They can't even make a small sacrifice of 4-8 weeks in order to come out ahead of a viral pandemic. They can't absorb the lesson provided by virtually the entire world. They falsely think their benighted Nation, ordained by God, is unique, bestowed a manifest destiny, immune from the scourges that afflict others. The hubris accompanying global greatness has rendered in just a few generations a societal sickness that bespeaks and precedes a decline.

The current "greatness" ofthe USA on the world stage derives principally from economic power and a preeminent military (bought at huge, arguably ruinous cost). In areas of justice, racial equality, education, access to medical services, wealth inequity, the ownership of the political class by corporations and the rich, worker rights, the proportion of the populace in jail, crumbling infrastructure, the hosting to power of a psychopathic criminal, etc., etc., it may not be too much of an exaggeration to class her a ******** country.

Made all the more obvious by the kind of bumbling idiocy that has now forced the world to close their doors against the plague carriers.

“Loyalty Tests”?
Politico said:
In the middle of a devastating pandemic and a searing economic crisis, the White House has an urgent question for its colleagues across the administration: Are you loyal enough to President Donald Trump? The White House’s presidential personnel office is conducting one-on-one interviews with health officials and hundreds of other political appointees across federal agencies, an exercise some of the subjects have called “loyalty tests” to root out threats of leaks and other potentially subversive acts just months before the presidential election, according to interviews with 15 current and former senior administration officials.

The official party line is that they are interviewing political appointees to determine if there is a place form them in the second term.

Apparently President Five-Year-Old has a hard time getting his head around the idea that political appointees can do their work in a non-partisan way..
I can’t imagine trying to explain to this emotional-stunted grifter that even if every government employee were a loyal Republican, there would still be a few leaks because many employees consider their loyalty to the Constitution more important than their loyalty to POTUS.

But don’t say he has a mental disorder. We must never say that.

ETA
I pray to the Gods of the Jedi religion that no one in the White House tells him that he needs to have his own police force with special extra-judicial powers.

You need to brush up on your reading comprehension, I'm saying that there are 60% who don't view President Trump favourability but the rabidly loyal 40% may be enough to see him reelected if enough of the rest can't vote, choose not to vote, or vote for a third party.
How does 40%, rabid or not, translate into 60%?

Never mind, it's too early to make those kinds of predictions anyway.

The economy is already "recovering", millions of jobs have been "added" (or more accurately returned as parts of the economy open up). The fact that there are still millions more out of work than there were is neither here there as far as the GOP spin machine is concerned.

They can claim that President Trump has created more jobs more quickly than any president in recent history - ignoring the minor detail that far more jobs were lost than have been gained.

Enough people may be ignorant, stupid or distracted enough to take the news at face value and conclude that he's an economic genius. After all that's a major part of why he was elected.

You question my reading skills, I question your interpretation of the news.

Yeah sure, the stock market hasn't crashed, the real estate market hasn't crashed (the Federal Reserve is doing that). But millions of people are out of work and those jobs won't be coming back anytime soon.

I'm not sure what you're looking at.

According to the news story, the dashboard tool disappeared from CDC's website, but it was back up again in a matter of hours to days. I don't know if it has all the same information. There was a strong backlash from public health officials on this, which I hope means that state officials and federal disease wonks will insist on transparency*.

Update on this matter.

Days after hospitals were told to stop sending information to CDC, all the fears appear justified

As the Idaho Statesman reports, the switchover had an immediate effect on the ability of state officials to see what was going on in their own states, with the spokesperson for the Idaho Department of Health reporting “significant challenges” in their ability to monitor the number of hospitalizations. With the way information is now being routed, it’s not being congregated at the state level, or available on the public website of the CDC. It’s all going into HHS, directly from individual hospitals, and what comes out the other side is only what the White House chooses to make available.

Information provided to the National Healthcare Safety Network was displayed as soon as it was updated, in real time. This led to some errors being displayed to the public, as mistakes, or badly formatted submissions, could generate errors that were instantly visible. But the alternative system, which is managed by private healthcare firm TeleTracking, is already resulting in delays and a lack of information that state officials called stunning and disappointing.

Idaho is far from the only state complaining about this abrupt and unexpected change to the system in the middle of a public health crisis. Unlike the CDC data, the HHS database that is now taking in the information is not visible to the public. That means not just unavailable to the casual observer, but also to anyone who wants to research, provide projections of trends, or double-check information coming from leadership at the state or federal level. It also means that thousands of city and county health officials have lost their direct access to their own local data.

As CNBC reports, sites like Covid Exit Strategy, which had been providing the public (and publications) with regularly updated information on the effectiveness of state-level actions, had found the data that’s required suddenly unavailable. This wasn’t a subtle change, or a loss of minor features. It’s sudden and complete inaccess to the core information needed to show what tactics are working and how healthcare systems are to being overwhelmed. The official position on the new system is that it’s supposed to allow the White House better visibility to the information, but the cost appears to be that everyone else has been shut out, including workers directly addressing the fast-moving crisis. When concerns are expressed about the data not being visible to “the public,” just assume that term means everyone outside the White House, including officials who need the information most.

It’s not as if states can simply send their data to the HHS system and to the National Healthcare Safety Network at the CDC. As of Wednesday, access to the CDC site has been cut off. There is a single data hotel for COVID-19 information—all the data is going in. Very little is coming out.

It's not looking good. Exactly as expected.

Both are deeply problematic matters that play into HHS.

Wouldn't it be great if China came up with an amazingly effective treatment? The PDJT would certainly be facing a tough time then!

Meh? First, though, to be clear, it would be great for anyone to come up with amazingly effective treatments. China coming up with it would help increase their influence more, though, which is not actually a particularly good thing for the world. As for Trump's relationship with China, I would suggest that it's not actually as "bad" as some might think or wish. Remember, Trump OWES China a MASSIVE amount of money, at last check, debt that's going to be due soon. Also, remember that Trump effectively idolizes people like Xi.

Well it's clear she meant 'science isn't saying not to do it', and she expanded no that. Now that's not true, but twisting the claim this way is not fair.

Honestly, when the Trump Administration literally testified to Congress that "Science is a Democrat thing" when it comes to how decisions are made and their actions in a lot of areas have pretty consistently confirmed such, there's not really much room to defend the Trump Administration. As for Kayleigh, it's possibly best to treat her as an utterly untrustworthy source for any meaningful purposes.

Astounding that a minority (a sizable one, though) of credulous deplorables is effectively holding the country hostage, mindlessly racking up the misery and death because they have bought into the politicization of what is in their own best interest.

Not actually so astounding, honestly, in light of the long, long lasting and unscrupulous campaigns to concentrate wealth and power into the hands of a very few, too many of whom are pretty much sociopaths.

I'm not sure what you're looking at.

I'm looking at the recently published job numbers.

4.8 million jobs were "added" in June - the largest number in a single month in recent history. For propaganda purposes, it doesn't matter that there are still millions out of work, that the jobs haven't been created so much as people are returning to work and that unemployment rate is triple what it was before Coronavirus - President Trump can claim that his administration is creating jobs in record numbers and the statistics are there to back him up.

It'll be the same with GDP growth. Coronavirus has caused a 20% drop in GDP in a single catastrophic jolt. Even if only a tenth of that is recovered in the next 3 months - a reasonable prospect as parts of the economy open back up, President Trump can point to annualised GDP growth of close to 10% - a great headline number.

How does 40%, rabid or not, translate into 60%?

It doesn't, and I never claimed that it does.

President Trump appears to have a rock-solid 40% of the electorate who support him no matter what.

60% of the electorate currently don't approve of his performance as President but not all of them are going to vote, and not all of them would vote Democrat even if they do vote. Some may be persuaded to vote GOP even though they don't approve of the candidate, some will vote for a third party (Green, Libertarian or even Constitution Party) but the biggest risk is that a much greater proportion of Trump supporters vote than people aren't Trump supporters.

Never mind, it's too early to make those kinds of predictions anyway.

You're right, but the GOP seems to be doing everything it can to ensure that, even if its candidate doesn't have the support of the majority of the electorate, he can still get elected.

Getting a million, mostly poor, people purged from the voter rolls in Florida because they haven't paid their fines is a major step in ensuring that Florida continues to vote GOP.

Stifling attempts to promote postal voting is another and who knows what shennanigans they are planning on polling day but I expect long lines and problems with the voting technology in certain neighbourhoods.
