There are likely also people who won't even state anonymously that they no longer support him, because that would require admitting to themselves that they made a bad decision by initially supporting him. If they made a bad decision then, what other bad decisions have they made? Are things they're upset about in their life actually their own fault? Unacceptable.
I think you're close. My take on it has always been more:
"All politicians are dirty. At least Trump doesn't hide it. That (through insane troll logic) makes me better then the people who support politicians who don't just admit they are dirty."
Basically a fair number (no I can't put some X exact percentage on it) of Trump's key demographic holds the opinion that all politicians are just as bad as Trump, and by supporting Trump instead of the other politicians, they are "winning" the game by not kidding themselves.
Again it ties back into this core idea they all seem to have that all sins are some variation on daring to have standards but not living up to them, so the only way to win is to have no standards and mock and deride everyone who does because they'll never be able to live up to them, mixed in with a fair sprinkling of that nihilistic belief that everything is not only bad, but equally bad.
It's why being pretentious, being full of yourself, being dramatic, "not being as smart as you think you are" and things like that are the only sins they recognize while being outright evil, wrong, stupid, or hurtful they brush off. Because, in their twisted world view the later views are at least honest.
