Cont: The Trump Presidency: Part 23

I am hoping there's counter-messaging to the rosy portrait he paints of Covid in the U.S. Not in context of calling Trump a liar, necessarily. Just daily tweets from someone about the running death rate, the testing per capita, maybe the hospitalization rate. However everything has become so polarized that there might not be much chance to reach people who get their news from Trump's Twitter feed.

Getting the press to call him out on lies is kind of a tactic Trump uses to keep people distracted and polarized. So I'm not sure that a drumbeat of stories saying he's lying really does much to keep the population at large informed. Remember that if the media are countering Trump's lies, the center of attention is still Trump vs. the actual pandemic.

Eventually I hope the campaign ads include billboards as it's one kind of advertising it's kind of hard to miss. Big messages presented pithily. Showing both Pence and Biden wearing masks might be a good place to start. There's a public health message there as well.

Not just Pence, but every Republican who has changed their tune about masks in the last couple of weeks. Really hammer the message, "This isn't about Republicans or Democrats, it's about Trump and reality".

That's essentially all of them. One day they were against masks, the next every single Republicans being covered was saying to wear masks. Even Trump made comments that in his mind were likely pro-mask. (Something to the effect that he had worn a mask several times.)

Again this was literally one day to the next, so it's pretty clear someone sent out a memo telling Republicans to support mask use because it was everywhere in their messaging all at once.

Probably because their brief, but furious effort to turn Biden’s wearing of a mask in public into a “Dukakis in the tank moment” failed so miserably.

So Roger Stone is angling for a pardon (or a commutation of his sentence).

From: Press Herald
Republican operative Roger Stone made a naked appeal to President Donald Trump to grant him a pardon or commute his sentence before he starts a 40-month prison term on July 14. “I want the president to know that I have exhausted all my legal remedies and that only an act of clemency will provide justice in my case and save my life!” Stone, 67, said in a statement sent by text Tuesday.

I do think Stone deserves substantial jail time. (Frankly, I think he's been lucky so far that the judge didn't have him jailed earlier, given the various stunts he's pulled...). But, I'm almost hoping Trump actually gives him a pardon...

On one hand, it would embarrass Trump (politically, not morally; trump doesn't do morals.) It would be a case of Trump pardoning his friends, which would be one more thing he could be criticized over in the election.

On the other hand, if anyone has decided to stick with Trump despite his screw ups over the coronavirus, racial protests, russian bounties, attempts to get foreign assistance in the election, and corruption of the DoJ, then Trump using the Pardon system to help an ally won't change their mind.

Latest Lincoln Project “Whispers” seeks to stoke Trump’s paranoid by stating his friends, family, staff, and high level “supporters” are all whispering nasty things about him, including that he is weak.

Sounds to me that it has the potential to drive him even more unhinged.

While the White House hunts for leakers who have revealed a deeply damaging story of potential presidential misconduct, Mr Trump also faces the release of a book by his cousin, Mary,

It's his niece, not his cousin. How could they get that wrong? It's been in every other news story about it.

(of course, considering odd family ties, one never knows...)

Alexander Graham Bell was american?

In the same way Nikola Tesla was since Tesla is more responsible for harnessing electricity than anyone. Not that Trump would accept that he was Serbian/Austrian.
