Anarchy in Seattle--Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone

Thanks for the info. Was he in any way involved in CHOP or is his mention just another "hey look over there" type of distraction ?

Not hard to find if you weren't only interested in dismissing the lack of rule of law in the White House.

The Hill: Barr praises Seattle police chief as officers clear protest zone
"I commend Police Chief Carmen Best for her courage and leadership in restoring the rule of law in Seattle," Barr said. "For the past several weeks, the Capitol Hill area of Seattle was occupied by protesters who denied access to police and other law enforcement personnel."...

"Chief Best has rightly committed to continue the substantive discussion while ending the violence, which threatens innocent people and undermines the very rule-of-law principles that the protesters profess to defend," Barr said. ...

"The message of today's action is simple but significant," Barr said in closing. "The Constitution protects the right to speak and assemble freely, but it provides no right to commit violence or defy the law, and such conduct has no place in a free society governed by law."

Barr and Trump both reek of hypocrisy making claims like that about CHOP.
Last month: Democrats’ Impeachment Lawyer Calls Out ‘Hypocrisy’ of Bill Barr’s ‘Two Standards of Justice’ Remark
I fear the dismissal of the Case against the President’s ally, Flynn, at the President’s urging is just Step One of the dismantling of the rule of law in this country.

Step Two may be the arrest and prosecution of the President’s enemies.

Then we are simply an autocracy.

2019: The moral hypocrisy of Attorney General Bill Barr
But, Barr would counter Jefferson and Franklin established a system of “Judeo-Christian values that have made this country great,” and the leftist, secular “erosion” of those values is the cause of mental illness, suicide, “increasing numbers of angry and alienated young males, an increase in senseless violence and a deadly drug epidemic.” ...

There is no such correspondence. The violent crime rate fell 51% between 1993 and 2018, a period of 25 years during which U.S. citizens became much more secular according to Fact Tank. ...

To hear President Barr tell it, one would think people who do not believe in God are ready to overthrow the government, tear up the Constitution, and plunge the United States into anarchy.

Do I need to do the same for Trump, telling the protesters they need to obey the rule of law all the while clearly showing zero respect for the rule of law as it applies to himself?

You just plain old hate the police period.

Do you support the wave of police violence we've seen in multiple cities around the US in response to BLM protests? Do you support hair trigger use of tear gas, of targeting people with "less lethal" weapons in a way known to cause permanent maiming, and the arrest of journalists?

The culture of policing is broken in this country, and I have contempt for anyone that would willingly play a part in continuing the current system. That's what ACAB means. It's not about individual animus by individual cops, it's about a system where every cop is complicit in unconscionable violence and oppression.

Nice to see you've dropped the broad brush and moved up to an industrial grade paint sprayer.

It's all over now though. Capitol Hill has been liberated much like how Europe was liberated during the D-Day invasion and the denizens of the area are now free to live their lives and conduct business unmolested.

Ha! They wish! Now the police are forcing everyone who lives or works in the neighborhood to show ID proving it, which is tricky - how many of you have ID to show you work in a small shop or restaurant? And of course this means the businesses are getting *no* customers at all. Apparently many feel that they're worse off with the cops than with the protesters.

Well that was certainly a unique view of the current situation. Not exactly inaccurate, but an odd way of phrasing things. Is this how the rest of the world view the U.S.?

I think different parts of world will think about USA slightly differently.

But I suspect I am not alone in thinking that USA lately became laughingstock in eyes of world.

Many of us that live here feel the same way. Two of my adult kids have dual citizenship with Canada, and both took advantage of it to get the heck out of the country, for which I don't blame them. I only wish I had Canadian citizenship too!

Are they going to do this for ever?

I'm curious about what people think the CHOP did wrong here.

Is there the belief that the cops would have somehow apprehended these drive-by shooters without gunfire? Is the belief that street violence doesn't occur in areas where police have their normal presence?

If reporting on the ground is accurate, the shooting of this car and occupants was textbook lawful. Unlike the cops, CHOP medics provided prompt aid to the wounded and transported them to the hospital. What's the problem?

Apparently it was two unarmed black teenagers and it was not a drive-by shooting.

16-year-old killed in Capitol Hill protest zone shooting identified

The King County Medical Examiner has identified the 16-year-old shot and killed in a vehicle at the Capitol Hill protest zone early Monday morning as Antonio Mays, Jr..

His family is asking anyone with information to step forward as the family seeks answers to what happened on 12th Ave an in the minutes prior in the early morning shooting that left the 16-year-old dead inside a white Jeep Cherokee and sent a 14-year-old to the hospital in critical condition.
My baby cousin was shot and killed yesterday in the CHOP zone. He was 16 years old trying to become involved in his community and a movement for true civil rights like his grandparents before him. Our family is asking for any information about the shooting. Please share and or send this to anyone who was in the zone prior to or after the shooting. Thank you in advance.

Yes, awesome work. Can you imagine the nationwide protests that would ensue if the police had shot these kids?

Ultimately, the problem of violence—and a dangerously naive understanding of policing—doomed the CHAZ. Over its 24-day history, the autonomous zone saw two gun homicides and four additional shooting victims. All the identified victims were black men—precisely the demographic for whom the CHAZ had claimed to offer protection. In the absence of a legitimate police force, armed criminal gangs and untrained anarchist paramilitaries filled the void. Almost every night, gunshots rang through the streets. The first homicide victim was killed in an outburst of gang violence; the second, reportedly unarmed and joyriding in a stolen car, was gunned down by the “CHAZ security force.”

In the end, the homicide rate in the CHAZ turned out to be 1,216 per 100,000—nearly 50 times greater than Chicago’s. Though that’s obviously not a strict apples-to-apples comparison—the small sample size of the CHAZ creates an exaggerated statistical effect—it’s instructive nonetheless, as it invalidates the entire premise of the autonomous zone. By instituting a “police-free zone,” the CHAZ didn’t become peaceable; it became lawless, brutish, and violent.

As the national media conducts its autopsy of the CHAZ, one tragic detail has escaped notice: the police department’s East Precinct building, which radicals saw as a symbol of “white supremacy,” was originally constructed under the leadership of Seattle’s first African-American city councilman, Sam Smith, who wanted to provide faster response times to the city’s Central District, where black residents had demanded greater police protection. The irony is cutting: Smith, who grew up in the Deep South during Jim Crow, saw policing as a public service; today, college-educated, white radicals see policing as an evil that must be abolished, whatever the consequences for African-Americans.

No,but you can't tear down the police and leave people without any protection.
And I note that you seem to have a very cavalair attitude about looting .

And by supporting CHOP, are you not complicit in unconscionable violence and oppression that is inherent in that system? Security forces where no roster exists. No background checks or training. No body cameras and no way to hold them accountable to the public and when they do commit unconscionable acts of violence, a cultural of silence so they are never held accountable for their actions. A system where the voices of the people living there are irrelevant. Mob rule isn't any variety of liberation from the wrongdoings of the police.

I am still waiting for the whole story. But regarding this claim by the family, sad as it is, the video of these two circling the Cal Anderson Park lawn in that SUV goes against the claim they were trying to join the protest.

Re being unarmed, that is still to be determined. From your link:
CHS [the news agency] reported on a night of driveby fears and uncertainty as at least one SUV style vehicle sped across Cal Anderson and through the protest camp before the confrontation on 12th Ave that ended in bloodshed. 911 callers reported a person shooting into a vehicle that had crashed along 12th Ave just after 3 AM.
They didn't just "speed across". The video shows at least two circles around the lawn.

These people had the opportunity to show just how much better everything would without the police. Of course it could only end with them murdering others out of fear of right-wing bogeymen.

A close friend of one (both?) of the kids tells a different story. She days she was on the phone with him before and up until he was shot. The kids purportedly told her they had just carjacked and were being pursued. She told them to go to nearby CHOP, where they were shot minutes later while they were still on the phone. According to the local news report yesterday (KIRO radio) it was unsure if the kids were shot by CHOP security or by the pursuer.

That's not the article with the photo of the guy making the white supremacy sign in it, is it ?

That's an interesting development.
