Cont: The Trump Presidency: Part 23

Gotta be frustrating for those idiots who waited in line for days, only to find that they could have just walked in at the last minute. Good.

Kinda like the crowd that camped out overnight for Phantom Menace tickets.

From The Guardian:

Trump is on his second free-jazz riff of the evening. This one is an in-depth story about getting a new aircraft for Air Force One from Boeing; Angela Merkel appears at some point. It ends, surprisingly, with Trump being proved to be correct despite other people telling him he was wrong. This one is getting less traction from the crowd than the one about the time he drank a glass of water at West Point, possibly because it makes very little sense.

CNN is playing a clip where he is saying he ordered covid testing to be cut back because they were finding too many cases.

IN case you're wondering, like me, what it looks like here's a screenshot:

I'd have to say what you are seeing looks about half full.

The lower section is packed, but the upper section (which would have more seats) is pretty sparse. And the floor also seems to be pretty empty.

I guess the question is, how much of the arena is actually being shown, compared to how much could have been filled. If they are only showing a couple of sections that were filled (and ignoring other areas that were completely empty) then attendance would have been really low.

Hard to tell from the screen resolution... but were many people wearing masks? (It doesn't look like it to me.)

I am surprised that he seems to be rather "on" tonight. You can tell because his voice is an octave higher than normal. If he's pissed off he's hiding it well.

I had the news on waiting for his entrance. For some reason, CNN is not carrying it live but just has talking heads. I only figured this out when they showed a clip of what he'd said several minutes ago. Jerks.
I would say that's a good thing.

Its a campaign event.... It is doubtful that anything significant would have been revealed... (just more bragging from Stubby McBonespurs). The important news is not what Trump talks about at the rally, but that it happened at all (despite the pandemic risks).

Some people think the news media made a mistake in the last election... giving Trump more coverage than he deserved, eagerly covering his speeches and rallies despite a lack of policy content, simply because he could get more ratings. (I remember one case during the primaries where the news cut away from one candidate giving a speech, to show an empty microphone and podium where trump was supposed to be speaking but hadn't yet arrived.) It amounted to free publicity/advertising, and if Trump didn't get so much media coverage, maybe he wouldn't have won the 2016 republican primary, much less the election.

So having CNN treat him as more or less just another candidate is a good thing.

My main problem with it is the implication that they were going to show the speech, and didn't. Usually I'm ok with just the highlights and the analysis but the one thing I wanted to see today live was his entrance.

He's actually dedicated time in his speech to talking about the ramp.

And just think about the fact that all I have to say is "the ramp" and you know exactly what I'm talking about and just how stupid this presidency is.

I had to tune to (*cough*) Fox. Just in time to hear the long-winded explanation of the ramp story.
Why would you expect CNN to carry it live?

ETA: Just saw your answer above. CNN gave him scads of free publicity in 2016. I know what you mean about wanting to see the entrance though.

He claimed (at great length) that he was so careful with drinking the water because he didn't want to spill any on his tie. He then proceeded with the prop glass that had been set-dressed for him and drank slowly and lovingly at the crowd.

Congratulations, America. We elected a President that can drink from a glass of water by himself. And not even use a sippy cup.

I am not surprised he is attempting that, but am gob smacked he blurts out he is doing that in front of the whole world. That is something you do as quietly as possible.
As people have said, thank heaven that Trump is so stupid in his attempts at evil dooing.

Even if you don't watch Fox news, I am sure One of the C Span channels carried it.

Best reaction to tonight's rally from Pink who tweeted:
"Hell, I sold that place out in five minutes".

Some are crediting "Zoomers" and K-Pop fans for mass-reserving tickets -- and then not attending. Who cares? What would it prove if a lot of people showed up, or if not as many as expected showed up (given, y'know, the plague)?

Well, given how much they were touting the "one million ticket requests" bit, it highlights two things:

  1. They didn't realize that some individuals were reserving hundreds of tickets each
  2. They set up a system that allowed individuals to reserve hundreds of tickets each

Both of those are major screw-ups on the part of the campaign organizers. Knowing who you sold a ticket to is pretty much a fundamental requirement for any kind of event organizer, even if it's a free event, and they completely dropped the ball on this. And not only did they drop the ball, they acted like they were actually spiking the ball in the end zone.

Taking bets as to how long until that "I slowed down COvid Testing remark gets walked back?
