Split Thread Tearing Down Statues Associated With Racial Injustice

DC protesters pull down, burn statue of Confederate general

Eyewitness accounts and videos posted on social media indicated that police were on the scene but didn’t intervene. President Donald Trump quickly tweeted about the toppling, calling out D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and writing: “The DC police are not doing their job as they watched a statue be ripped down and burn. These people should be immediately arrested. A disgrace to our Country!”
Jubilant protesters read out Trump’s tweet over a bullhorn and cheered. After the statue fell, most protesters returned peacefully to Lafayette Park near the White House.

After decades of commissions and hearings and public input reports it seems the conversation is being reframed.

It's not "do we keep this statue or not." Now it is "hey we have a spot for a statue. What should we put there?"

Which is a much more level playing field to start from.

Which is the point.

Also, another demonstration of Trump unable to do anything about it.

Grant now, and of course, Francis Scott Key.
Not an orgy of destruction at all.

These idiots.

Does anyone think for a moment that someone tearing down a statue of Ulysses S. Grant is doing so because he thinks it might bring about racial justice? It has nothing to do with that. But, I suppose you got the right word after all. Orgy. Pure hedonism. It's just getting in on the act. Tearing down statues is fun. It makes people feel powerful. It's a purely emotional experience, utterly devoid of rational thought.

I think you're right in a way, but the irrational revolutionary orgy that some seem to be enjoying now is, in large part, the consequence of the powers that be having continually thumbed their nose at rationality and compromise, but expecting others to burn the archives. We'll look at it, we'll look into it, we'll talk about it, we'll work on it. Let's reboot to where we were in 1960, and we promise that this time we'll do better.

"I won't listen to you because you're using violence and not following the law!"
"Did you listen to us when we weren't using violence and following the law?"
"No, obviously. Then you obviously didn't really mean it."

Dreyer's Ice Cream is retiring the long running "Eskimo Pie" ice cream sub-brand.

Free at last. Free at last. Thank God almighty, we're free at last.

I learned something from the article, though. "Eskimo" is the name given to the Inuits by people who weren't Inuits. There's a lot of that in America. As settlers moved in and got to know a group of Indians, they would ask, "And....who are those other people who live across the river?" The Indians would say, "Those are the (insert word here that means some variation on "enemy" or 'awful pond scum')."

I know that's how we got the words "Sioux", "Apache" and "Navajo". None of those people actually called themselves by those names. Those were the names given to them by rival tribes. Add "Eskimo" to the list.

Pretty much.

Any evidence for your orgy of dissent?

Some born fool on FacePalm has called Washington and Jefferson inhuman scum.

Oh well. Hysteria burns out sooner than nuanced understanding.

That's one hell of a false dilemma.
