MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- Federal air marshals shot and killed a man on a boarding bridge at Miami International Airport after he said he had a bomb, two sources familiar with the incident told CNN.

Flight 924 was in Miami on a stopover during a flight from Medellin, Colombia, to Orlando, Florida, when the man said there was a bomb in his carry-on luggage, a Department of Homeland Security official said.

He was confronted by a team of federal air marshals, who pursued the man down the boarding bridge and ordered him to get on the ground, the official said.

When the man appeared to reach into his baggage, at least one shot was fired by the marshals, wounding the man, the official said, adding that marshals' actions were consistent with their training.

Hmmm. I seem to recall another instance when a suspected terrorist was shot, everyone agreed it was the only thing that could have been done, then it turns out that the circumstances were very different than first advertised....I think I'll wait a while before forming any opinions.

That doesn't really make sense if you follow the article.

Alpizar had boarded the plane in Colombia, Air Marshal Service spokesman Dave Adams said. After he got off the plane in Miami and went through customs, he got back on the plane and said he had a bomb, Adams said.

How did he get back on the plane after having passed through Customs? Don't they have barriers and stuff there? Perhaps he just forgot something in the aircraft, and thought he could just go back and get it? I dunno... Story sounds decidely odd... :confused:

yeah, i think waiting to see what the whole story is is best. But it wouldn't suprise me if the off the meds explanation is correct.

Even if that is the case, I would still put the blame on him, his wife, his family, his friends, his doctors, etc. Sounds like he shouldn't have been out in public (and this is coming from someone who does take a lot of psychotropic medications to treat debilitating mental illness.)

The police should not stop and say "Oh, okay", just when someone says "Hey, he's sick! He's off his meds!" That would be a very easy way to stop police intervention, that the bad guys could take advantage of.

Yeah, looks like someone forgot to take his meds. A most inopportune time and place to have a freak out. :(

And someone being mentally ill does not preclude the possibility that he does have a bomb, or is able to maim or kill someone.

Yep, exactly.

I am an equal-opportunity a**hole. I am cold, callous, and heartless, even when it comes to people that I have something in common with. I feel sympathy to people that are so ill that they are dangerous in public. But, when they endanger people (and inciting panic is endangering people), they need to be treated the same as anyone else, so that the danger is abated with the same speed and effectiveness it would be in a similar situation with a non-ill person. Sorry, but that's life.
 
I haven't read any news reports yet but i have dealt with bi-polars on and off their meds. Suicide by law enforcement is a viable scenario.

I think that treatment of mentally ill criminals should be different AFTER they are taken out of public and are no longer a threat to anyone. But while they are endangering the public, law enforcement needs to take the same fast and effective methods they would with anyone. It is only after the person is secured and not endangering anyone anymore that mentally ill people should be treated differently. Unless, of course, a different course of action on a mentally ill person could resolve the situation more quickly and with less danger to the public than the course of action that would be normal for a non-ill person.
