To me, when the "grab them by the pussy" tape came out, my biggest thought was actually. "Hillary. Stop talking about this! No one cares!" It was the Saturday before the election when I spent a lot of time in my car, and heard that on a Hillary commercial played over and over again that I first started getting nervous.

In other words, at that time, a lot of Democrats were saying, "We've got him!", but I, and apparently somewhere close to half the voters were saying, "I don't care." I thought that was the most overplayed moment of the campaign.

I have a different feeling this time. It was so staged. So obviously phony. Will it actually matter? Time will tell. I just think the "I'm going to use a church and a Bible as a prop" motif doesn't play well. I wish I could read the minds of Trump voters, or people who would consider voting for him, to see how this played.

I partly agree.

His supporters live in their own paralell universe, where only Trumpkin-friendly facts are allowed, so they have every Trump scandal presented to them as a Trump victory, or, failing that, they are served some distractions and whataboutisms until the scandal has blown over.

At the same time, though... I like to believe that these are chipping away at the support of at least some of his voters. Not sure what to compare it to, Americans' view of the Viet Nam war, perhaps. I don't know if anyone spontaneously became opposed to the war when they saw the footage of napalm girl, for instance, but surely the various reports and

There is a significant number of trumpkins who for some reason believe Trump is sent by God or whatever. Driving away peaceful protesters to stand awkwardly outside a church holding a Bible upside down might not make huge swaths of them suddenly decide to drop him, but, you know, if he does indeed die the death of a thousand cuts,

Either way, the constant Trumpisms do at least act as a constant reminder to his detractors that it's imperative they vote him out this November.

Also, keep in mind how few votes he won by in those few states where won by, what was it, 14 000 votes? With a margin that small, who knows if one more "grab them by the ***** incident" might have cost him his presidency?

It is hard for me, as for you, to understand how a religious person could not look at that footage and realize how Trump's "religious belief" is a complete fraud and snow job. His whole body language says it; how he looks and handles the bible. His pronouncements say it. The fact that he never bothered to speak with the clergy in the church (even had some of them removed to clear the photo op), never prayed, never even had a moment of silent introspection. Not to mention the fact he cynically had peaceful protestors tear gassed and shoved aside just so he could stand there for a few uncomfortable moments hoping an avenging God would not pick him off with a lightening strike.

I am an atheist but I have more respect for the bible and for churches than Trump showed. I may not believe in god but I respect the beliefs of the people who do. Trump? He respects no one and no thing except himself.

President Trump said “Two Corinthians” at a university address.
At the National Day of Prayer Breakfast, he listens to the keynote speaker explain why 21st Century Christians must follow Jesus’s teachings to love thy neighbor. He then takes the microphone and says “ Arthur, I don’t know if I agree with you,” before going on to explain why he is justified in hating his enemies.
He has not attended church services (aside from funerals) since taking office.

Any of his followers who haven’t yet realized that Trump's "religious belief" is a complete fraud and snow job simply don’t want to believe it

He was refering specifically to the picture where he held it up as if it was Mao's little red book.

It seems others have interpreted it the same way.

Maybe it's a Republican thing.

Indeed. The part that makes it such a personally insulting feeling to have him foisted upon us is that it has never been a secret!

To paraphrase a meme I am sure we have all seen by now: if someone had told me after Trumps election that the U.S. would be this bad off in 3 years-I would have absolutely believed them!

It plays just fine. The church and the Bible are just that: props. You really think that most "Christians" actual follow the teachings of the Bible? Ha! Going to church and reading the Bible are the motions they go through to create a facade of "Good, God-fearin'" people. Trump does and has done the same thing. That photo op plays very well to most Christians because it's exactly what they do all day, every day.

Reading your post, I realized that "Republican" and "conservative" are often used interchangeably. Maybe they were at one time but not any longer. Trump is not a conservative nor is he, really, anything. He's rudderless. But the policies he pushes do get approval from so-called conservatives but they are but a faint echo of what conservative used to mean.

Take trade for example. Traditionally conservatives were advocates of trade pacts if for no other reason than it made a few oligarchs millions. But Trump has been a disaster on trade.

Or consider the Senate. Once called the world's great deliberative body, it has been horribly stained by the actions of McConnell and others. All too many Republican senators hew to the party-line (read Trump) over clear alternatives that would benefit the whole country. Would a conservative, interested in preserving Senate traditions that have served the country for 200+ years have gone along with the Garland fiasco? Gone along with the ****-show that was the impeachment trial? I think not.

The country needs a principled, conservative political party. The GOP has ceased to serve in the role. Thus, I think a distinction needs to be made between "conservative" and "Republican" in light of the fact that they are years - if not decades - away from being synonymous.
 
Apparently tear gas was not used to clear protesters from Lafayette Park, just smoke bombs and pepper balls.
