Cont: The Trump Presidency: Part 22

I'd say he's read too many apocrypha for most evangelicals.

And Saint Attila raised the hand grenade up on high, saying, "O Lord, bless this thy hand grenade, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy." And the Lord did grin.

Armaments 2:9

He's the evangelicaliest President!
*Trump makes out with bible*

ETA: On an unrelated note look how happy and glowing Trump is when hugging the America flag vs. holding the bible. Looks like someone shot his puppy right before the bible photo op!! Think the thing was burning a hole in his hand!

Another thing. Trump claims he is mobilizing a "heavily armed" military to stop protesters.

One would assume that the military would likely as not be "heavily armed" so who is this for, his idiot sycophants? Do they get all hard/wet listening to this fake tough talk?
I'm old enough to remember when the British Government got tough with Northern Ireland and sent the Paras to police a Civil Rights march. The upshot was Bloody Sunday, battalions of recruits for the Provos, and twenty years of inter-communal violence.

So... no downside?

THis. The danger is that if they use massive force to stop the protests. some of the more militant protestors will decide that lawful protest don't work, and go into full scale revolutionary guerilla war a la the Waathermen, the Black Liberation Army and the SLA in the Late Sicties and the Seventies.
You also have constituional issues in the US as to whether the President legally can order federal troops to enforce civil war unless asked for help by the local authoraties.

The history of protest in the US is unambiguous: more police/military force will only extend and intensify the violence.

I can't help thinking that that is the goal: put as many Blue Voters as possible in jail, in hospital or in the grave before November.

A tactic by radical groups is to incite an over reaction by the government. It draws sympathy and many more supporters to the radicals’ cause. Apparently Trump didn’t need radicals to incite his dangerous responses and rhetoric: he thought it up all by himself.

He really is inciting civil war. My god!

Alas, it is a tragedy to watch the bulwark of democracy fail dismally. As a child of the sixties, the US was looked up to. Now it is looked down upon as a basket case. And they did it to themselves.
At least they got some good tax cuts before things went to heck.

Priorities man!

I think history may record this as the start of the Second American Civil War.

I suspect that if it is, then the same folks who spent the past 150 years claiming that the “War of Northern Aggression” had nothing to do with the way that black people were treated are going to spend the next 150 yearS claiming that Civil War II had nothing to do with the way black people were treated.

What I like about it, and I do so wish that more people liked, is that it is wholly about his character. It isn't about economics, or racism, or even incompetence. Trump is accused of all of those daily here and throughout the land by his enemies, but those things are not why he is deservedly hated, why he ought to be hated by more. Disregarding all of those things, he is, after all of that, a loathsome creature. One thing I appreciated was that he started right from the very beginning, in the reaction to the inauguration crowds, and his pettiness and his disregard for the truth. Yes, we dislike his tax cuts for the rich, or his Supreme Court nominees, but much more so we ought to fear, and even those aligned with him politically ought to fear, an utter mendaciousness that one might expect from a Saddam Hussein, but not from the President of the United States.

I know it isn't realistic. I know it won't happen, but I am glad to see a man like George Will, whose conservative bona fides are unquestionable, calling on the Republican Party to dump their incumbent President, and even to be whisked out of power if they refuse.

Exactly. I've always said that, even if I agreed with his policies, I could never vote for him because he is a despicable excuse for a human being.

The main talking point should be that Trump dispersed peaceful protesters exercising their First Amendment rights in order to stage a photo. The incident perfectly encapsulates his pettiness, insincerity, and vanity.

If Trump were asked "What do evangelicals believe?" I bet he couldn't give an accurate answer.

I’m not even convinced he could accurately describe Christianity.

Or name 3 commandments.

At least no-one is talking about how badly he's handling the Coronavirus any more
That might actually be worse for Trump.

Even though trump has been incompetent in dealing with Covid19, it hasn't greatly affected his popularity ratings. Plus, it is easier to find excuses... It's a foreign virus, other countries are affected, etc. And he can always point to things like relief payments to claim "I am doing something" (even if what he is doing isn't enough, or if most of the work was done by congress.)

On the other hand, Trump's popularity seemed to be at its lowest around the charlottesville protests. (The racial conflict is a uniquely American issue, so trump can't blame it on foreigners, and unlike Covid19 I don't thing there is anything positive he can claim credit for.

In a week or two trump will probably welcome it if they talked about the pandemic, to make people forget how racist he is

In three or four days, there'll be some other outrage to shift focus away from this. Maybe something to do with North Korea, "Jina", voter suppression, Mexico or some other ****
