Vaccines are coming along really well. Likewise therapeutics. Moving faster than anticipated. Good news ahead (in many ways)!

Did not think you'd write the words "objectively evil" even in a made up quotation.

Whole other topic, I know, but that was a little jarring.

My distate for anti-intellectualism presenting itself as philosophy does not make me blind to factual human suffering, and find the implication that it does/should insulting.

Republicans, get out and vote today for those great candidates that will lead to big victories on November 3rd. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

That might actually be worse for Trump.

Even though trump has been incompetent in dealing with Covid19, it hasn't greatly affected his popularity ratings. Plus, it is easier to find excuses... It's a foreign virus, other countries are affected, etc. And he can always point to things like relief payments to claim "I am doing something" (even if what he is doing isn't enough, or if most of the work was done by congress.)

On the other hand, Trump's popularity seemed to be at its lowest around the charlottesville protests. (The racial conflict is a uniquely American issue, so trump can't blame it on foreigners, and unlike Covid19 I don't thing there is anything positive he can claim credit for.
You seem to have the impression that what President Trump can blame on foreigners and what President Trump can take credit for are determined by facts and logic. They are not.
Oh, I agree... Trump doesn't use facts or logic in deciding what to take credit for.

To me, its a question of whether his claims will be accepted.

With Covid-19, the government did supply tests. It did supply needed equipment. Financial support was provided to the affected people. Not nearly enough was done, and Trump was more of a problem than a help, but he can claim "I was in washington when that was done" and some people may foolishly believe he did good.

But with these racial protests? He can claim "I'm calling for law and order" but things are really just getting worse.

In a week or two trump will probably welcome it if they talked about the pandemic, to make people forget how racist he is
Why would he want to make people forget how racist he is?[/quote]
Because as I pointed out before, his worst polling numbers seemed to come around the time of the charlottesville protests.

The way I see it, his racist followers need a figleaf to hid their racism. When Trump's racism is front and center, it causes at least a few of them to go scurrying away.

Also, why would Trump be bothered by people talking about the pandemic? He believes it is almost over and that his work saved the country from one or two million deaths. Hell, there are probably White House staffers pulling their hair out as the try to convince him to not use his pandemic response as a plank in the re-election platform.
I didn't say he would be bothered talking about the pandemic. Just the opposite... I suggested he (in his warped mind) would probably prefer talking about the pandemic than than the current race riots because at least he probably thinks he can lie more effectively about Covid19.

I'm not sure what vaccines/therapeutics he's talking about, and neither does he, but you can be goddamned sure he'll take credit for them, even if they come from a lab in Jina.

I don't think it was until a few days ago that Biden finally led in the prediction markets. Currently 53 cents per share of Biden to 46 cents for ByeDon.

So it was the wrong sort of peaceful protest?

Isn't that always the excuse?

Yep.

See, they have to do protests in a way where it not only doesn't inconvenience anyone, but out of the way where no one can even have to see it who doesn't want to.

Granted, those aren't usually the most effective protests, but that's kind of the point.

It's not that it's always the excuse.

It's that there always is an excuse.

No matter what had happened, the black people would have been chastised for not doing it a certain way.

That picture of him standing there like an imbecile must get used in an attack ad.

I saw a juxtaposition of the picture of him standing there holding the bible with a picture of another nameless leader holding up his book.

Remarkably similar.

Exactly. They were disgusted by Kaepernick's peaceful protests that did not disrupt anything other than their conscience. They were disgusted by peaceful protests in the streets that were inconvenient for their drives to the liquor stores. Now they are upset that a few bad apples are causing property damage and violence in these 98% peaceful demonstrations complaining that we should protest peacefully....

They can't peacefully kneel before a ball game, an action which literally harms no one or indeed does anything.

They can't peacefully but disruptively block a freeway because they'll get run over.

They can't engage in acts of civil disobedience.

They can't protect themselves when the police are violent against them.

They can't be outright violent as the initiator.

Yeah I think all the bases of "What they are allowed to do" have been covered.

Well, perhaps we'll discuss the distinction between causing suffering and doing evil in some other context some day.

A few days ago he was retweeting posts about hydroxychloroquine used in combination with zinc. The zinc is claimed to be a game changer, the missing piece of the puzzle. I'm guessing someone invested in zinc supplements.

remember

Joe Biden went out into the streets and talked to the people.

Donald Trump went out into the streets and tear gassed the people.

I'm curious if the cops knew the reason they were clearing out the protestors was just for a photo op. The next ones surely will.

Why do you think they would care? They just need an excuse and then they get the fun of busting heads. Why they go after the reporters and first aid providers, they are less likely to fight back when the cops beat them. Just like happened to Kitty's duaghter who was hospitalized because it was more fun to beat the tiny woman than her large fit boyfriend right next to her caring for those injured by the police.

Okay, this is a little off-topic, but it's a pet peeve of mine and it's tangentially related to Trump.

From a WaPo article on Trump's deceptions:

But the pace of deception has quickened exponentially. He averaged about six claims a day in 2017, nearly 16 a day in 2018, and more than 22 a day in 2019 and 2020 so far.

What the hell? These three points do not look at all like exponential growth. The third point is below a line going through the first two!

I know, I know, it's not the point of the article, but I'm used to garden variety misuse of the term "exponential". I'm not used to it when the second derivative appears to be negative. Gah.
