I almost can’t believe what I’m seeing. POTUS just walked out the front door of the White House and into Lafayette Square - the epicenter of the DC protests - to visit historic St. John’s Church, which was set on fire last night.

The rioters aren’t listening, they have no respect, and they aren’t slowing down on their own. These are criminals and many are violent.

National Guard, law enforcement, Mayors, community leaders, and others need to shut this all down right now.

Strong words by @realDonaldTrump to fill the breach of Mayors/Govs who need to do more to restore order.

Peaceful protests can be beautiful & profoundly American & are constitutionally protected.

Rioting is another story. Looting, arson, physical violence, etc. must end NOW!

Before he spoke, federal police violently broke up a peaceful protest near the White House, tear-gassing a group of ~1,000 demonstrators and then firing rubber bullets at them.

Did the highlighted actually happen ?

AIUI a peaceful protest was violently dispersed. The pastor of the church was opposed both to that action and President Trump's visit.

It apparently happened the previous night, or maybe the night before.

ETA: The Guardian says

The unprovoked action cleared the way for Trump to cross the street and visit St John’s church, which since 1816 has been the “Church of the Presidents”, and where a fire burned in the basement amid unrest on Sunday night.
