The Trump Presidency: Part 21

Manafort has some pretty nice digs purchased with his ill-gotten gains. I'd rather he be released into something like a halfway house where he has to do the dishes, vacuum the floor, etc. Restricting him to his own house smells too much like a reward.

We are apparently on the same page here.

Each of Trump's tweets is evidence of a befuddled fool. But seeing several of them in a row is, for me, quite disturbing. I know it's been said before but he is really dangerous to what is supposed to be the American democracy. Why his supporters don't see that befuddles me.

To be clear, assuming that they don't see that is a very, very dangerous assumption.

Betting markets don't matter. What will happen when second wave hits (and possibly third) matters. It is very likely that COVID-19 will still rampage through USA when November rolls in. There will be no time for people to forget/gaslight/fool about who murdered them by inaction to tune of eighty thousand... so far.

So, yeah. Trump is already screwed as far I am concerned. Good riddance.

His only chance for remaining el presidento (literally) is destroying democratic* process in USA with full support of his rethuglican degenerate cronies.

He may be too incompetent to pull it off, but mere existence of that possibility is something that should scare the bejesus of you all that actually care about USA not becoming far rightwing authoritarian state in style of Putin's biggest banana republic in world.

* Well, this process is already pseudo-democratic, both in "Electoral College" sense and in "voting suppression and other shenanigans" sense. But that's neither here nor there.

Yeah, I'm confident the system/American people will do the right thing.

Maybe they don't care about something as abstract as American democracy and are instead far more concerned about the welfare of themselves, those around them, those they care about and the causes they believe in.

For example, perhaps they think that a slight dilution of democracy is a price worth paying to save the lives of "millions of unborn children who are slaughtered every year by abortionists". Sure, a majority of people are said to be in favour of abortion, but they're wrong and morally bereft. For the good of society as a whole, it's better in this case that the majority do not prevail - THINK OF THE unborn CHILDREN !!1!1!!1!!!

Also, democracy doesn't put food on the table, or perhaps more pertinently doesn't allow wealth to be accumulated. If American democracy has its way then there's a fear that the other lot might get in and raise taxes, grab guns, give the undeserving poor healthcare and a myriad other things that might impact on my welfare.

Just one point - you mean " think of the unborn babies" not children, it is obvious they don't give a crap about children as long as the babies are born.

In spite of all the Republicans' professed concern for the sanctity of the voting process the highest ranking Republican in the country committed not one, but two illegal acts when voting ... for himself ... and they are not at all disturbed by this.

His residence was still in NYC in 2016.

Good point. He just voted for his supporters.

I also doubt that this could be successfully prosecuted as fraud, but won't bother with a less than half-informed argument to the contrary since what the **** do I know about residency laws?

That isn't all that clear cut. When Trump applied for the zoning exceptions he needed to open Mar-a-Lago as a private club he agreed, in writing, to a series of very explicit and quite detailed specifications which precluded the use of Mar-a-Lago as a private residence of any sort ... for anybody. He can hardly claim to be unaware of that agreement and those specifications, since he so energetically and publicly (at least in Palm Beach) fought against their inclusion.

The zoning choices he was given were simple, he could claim the place as a private residence or run it as a club.

Not both.

Since he knew that he was not legally allowed to claim Mar-a-Lago as his private residence, and was operating it as a private club at the time he registered to vote in Florida, then an application for voter registration in Florida using it as his place of residence is obviously fraudulent. I don't see how it could be framed as anything else. It isn't a matter of whether or not he was actually using it as his legal place of residence, it is that he was legally not allowed to use it as his place of residence. The zoning regulations he agreed to even specify how many weeks in succession and how many weeks in a given year people are allowed to reside there.

Whether or not anyone bothers to try and prosecute him for it is a different question, but if they were to, the facts are pretty clear.

Ah. The stakes are too high to have a fair and transparent election.
After all, our beloved president has told us that [sneer]those people[/sneer] vote, go outside, put on a different hat, and then go in to vote a second time, so if we put our thumb on the scale, it is just to offset their whole hand on the scale.

And democracy says everyone gets one vote, everyone has the right to run for political office, and everyone is eligible to serve as a federal judge (or at least strives for those goals). There are some folks (perhaps a small percentage, perhaps a large percentage) who really don’t think people belonging to a certain religion or a certain race should have all the rights and privileges as themselves.

If polls show that the majority of Trump supporters believe that Christians face more discrimination than members of any other religion and that white folks face more discrimination than members of any other race, then perhaps minorities are exploiting a bug in the system.

Trump Tweets

Intel chief releases info on ‘unmasking’ of Flynn to Capitol Hill https://politi.co/3dIYUDa via @politico
Next he will be tweeting furiously about how often Obama used the bathroom in the White House. That surely was when he secretly signaled Hillary's black helicopters to come hover over Trump tower on 9-11 at the start of Obamagate.

Trump is a Conjurer's Apprentice who thinks he can summon things into existence if he just repeats the spell often enough.

The thing is, with a compliant media and a fertile audience it does.

I presume that OBAMAGATE refers to a Deep State plot to tarnish President Trump with unfounded allegations of collusion with the Russians and Russian inference in the 2016 election. It's a narrative that the GOP seems to be embracing.

Heck, stories of Hillary's involvement in a child molestation ring operating out of the basement of a Pizza store with no basement became mainstream and if not widely believed, at least widely considered. I have no doubt that by September 40%+ of the electorate will have been convinced that Obamagate is a "thing" and that Obama should be prosecuted for it

It seems to be a catch-all phrase for real and imagined (presumably mostly imagined) offenses by their favourite boogeyman Obama. If the Conservapedia article is representative of what the "Obamagate" people believe, it seems to be mostly wiretapping and Deep State-esque intelligence plots.

https://www.conservapedia.com/Obamagate

And yes, since Trump and his disiciples lives in a post-fact world, repeating lies baseless lies over and over probably has a bigly big effect on his base.

Well it all sounds quite plausible to me.
Conservapedia said:
In Obamagate, a marked pattern has emerged in using the foreign intelligence apparatus of the United States to harass domestic opponents. This has occurred under the guise of US foreign policy - showing favoritism to China while impugning advocates for peace with Russia. Beginning with the Chinagate scandal and the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP), Progressives have slowly taken control of the Military-industrial complex now centered in Silicon Valley. Russophobia is the focus of their demonizing efforts because of Russia's stand against gay marriage and the homosexual agenda.

Just look at the Benghazi Kabuki Theatre show for an example where this is all going. The difference will be that this time Trump will be running the show. The Replubicans had no qualms about investigating anyone they wanted for as long as they wanted.
