Of course they will.

The US numbers are overstated, all other countries' are understated.

No evidence is offered, but the vast majority of Americans believe it to be true because "'MURICA"

It's a shiny new world:

We don't like the size of the crowd. Therefore, fake photos.
We don't like the vote results. Therefore, fake vote.
We don't like the news reports. Therefore, fake news.
We don't like the poll results. Therefore, fake polling.
We don't like the video of dear leader talking. Therefore, fake video.
We don't like that document. Therefore, fake dossier.
We don't like these investigations. Therefore, fake investigators.
We don't like this meeting. Therefore, fake closed-door meeting.
We don't like these hearings. Therefore, fake impeachment.
We don't like that person now. Therefore, fake coffee boy.
We don't like China. Therefore, fake virus.
We don't like the death toll. Therefore, fake numbers.

Kayleigh McEnany wasn't joking. She was defending the trump administration's record on testing for Covid-19. This is from a Fox News site so it's an official White House communication:

Oh thank god, it's just normal stupid then, not "Trying to be clever" stupid.

I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but this is so important for people to understand. I just wish that more people caught the significance of this, and that it mattered to them.

On day one of his administration, he demonstrated to the entire country that he cared not at all for the truth. It was blatant. It was documentable. There was no question about what was real, versus what was said, and that he knew it was false. It should have been a red flag to everyone.

Alas, some people believed the lie even though it was documented and obviously false, while many others just didn't think it mattered.

Well, a guy who will lie without shame about the size of a crowd will also lie without shame about the number of dead people.

And...….we all know that. It's a pity that we can't reach the rest of the country as easily.

The conservative blogosphere and social media presence have been hitting on the "deaths are overcounted, total cases are undercounted" thing for months now, nearly since the first few cases were made known in America.

It's a wonder the White House took this long to catch up to the standard misinformation.

For which part?

He has publicly said he wasn't disbanding the task force after all. He might change people on the task force to focus on reopening the country.

Trump: "I had no idea how popular the task force was."

This BS from the guy who closely studies the daily ratings of his Task Force press briefings, and brags about them.

Just to provide some prospective to what 100,000 people dead repress visually: approx. 100, 000 people at Michigan Stadium in better days.

Think of that many dead, often dying very painfully, and the additional impact on the many more people who loved them. These are not just impersonal numbers that can be casually traded off to benefit political posturing. These were real people.

I'm sure it's very likely that the total number of cases are undercounted and so it's plausible that the death rate (not count) is lower than reported.

One issue, of course, is the conflation of count and rate and the fact that a depressingly large segment of the population doesn't understand the distinction without effort.

I was bored with the NPR offerings yesterday and tuned into AM for a few minutes. Rush Limbaugh was mocking the notion that the virus had mutated to be more communicable as just another made up scare story. No evidence given, of course, aside from the self-evident truth that scientists are liars and mutation makes one think of giant man-eating houseflies (not making that up, he talked about how scary the word is because we all tend to think of monstrous flies).

He's startlingly popular. I guess that ignorance of statistics is the least of our concerns.

It's also likely that deaths are under-reported.

In the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), state, county, and municipal authorities report cases and deaths in which the presence of the novel coronavirus is confirmed in a laboratory test. However, many people who died and had COVID-19 symptoms - at home, in a nursing home, or a long-term care facility - are not being tested.

We also know that Florida's county coroners have been ordered to not release their death counts before the "official" state tolls have been published. Who knows what that moron DeSantis is up to with this.

What's very strange to me is, the way some people dodge and weave over this. Over two weeks ago two doctors in California held a news conference to say the state should reopen. One of the doctors said he was even refusing to put a face mask on when he went outside. That the virus was no more deadly than seasonal flu. A poster here stated they thought California didn't need all the restrictions other places did because the state has "better weather." Almost since that very day new cases in California began to rise. On May 5th they reached a new high (as the chart below demonstrates). Google coronavirus tracker

What seems strange to me is, people don't come back then and admit they may have been misreading this thing. For instance, to support California not needing the same restrictions as other places, it was pointed out the Covid-19 death rate in California was 29 per million residents, much lower than in other states. As of May 5th over 2,200 Californians have died and the fatality rate per million residents has doubled since mid-April. People who were arguing the reverse, I guess they just won't let themselves see it. But why, what is their bottom line?

I don't listen to Rush Limbaugh, but I have seen a video clip of Limbaugh assuring his audience a couple months ago that the coronavirus "is no worse then the common cold." Did he ever retract that statement? Apologize for giving people potentially deadly misinformation? How does this work?

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The Trump administration has shelved a document created by the nation’s top disease investigators with step-by-step advice to local authorities on how and when to reopen restaurants and other public places during the still-raging coronavirus outbreak.

Seems rash.

“CDC has always been the public health agency Americans turn to in a time of crisis,” said Dr. Howard Koh, a Harvard professor and former health official in the Obama administration during the H1N1 swine flu pandemic in 2009. “The standard in a crisis is to turn to them for the latest data and latest guidance and the latest press briefing. That has not occurred, and everyone sees that.”

Pointy-headed fake Obama enemy of the people look a squirrel.

Really, the whole inauguration crowd flap was when I knew that Trumps election was every bit as bad as it seemed. At that point, I still had a slim hope that he would rise to the occasion, and take the responsibility seriously. But it was immediately obvious that he wasn't just putting on an act for the rubes; he was every bit the narcissistic, stupid liar that he appeared to be. To state that the crowd was "the biggest ever" was a trivial lie. or mistake. Having said it and being called on it, he had two rational choices: Admit he was wrong (Never gonna happen with Trump). Shut the hell up, say no more, and it would have been forgotten in a week. He decided to double down.
