The all-new "US Politics and coronavirus" thread

Regarding the armed protesters 'demanding' Michigan end the shutdown. The rate of new cases in the state continues to dip and spike. From 575 new cases last Sunday to 980 yesterday at the same time the protesters were arriving at the state house in Lansing. The chart below shows that the infection is not yet under control in Michigan. Though most people -- except the protesters who would undoubtedly 'refuse' to accept this -- probably believe that, without the emergency measures, the number of cases would be far worse.

One troubling fact revealed by the chart below -- click to enlarge -- the virus in Michigan seems especially deadly. The rate of people dying from it is over 9%!

Can one imagine what would happen if a half-dozen such Panthers stood in the State house balcony with billy clubs?

I mean, the gun thing is odd. I think these sorts of protesters would be happy to see black people with guns doing this - IF (BIG IF) the black people had long guns and military-looking tacticool accessories. Like, the long guns and the pseudo-military look make it all good.

But if black men in berets with pistols or clubs did this, the militia types would throw gaskets aplenty. That would not fit their perceptions of what "freedom" looks like.
No need to wonder: it already happened. And the response was predictable.

An alternative view is that Michiganders are under-diagnosed, especially those with few or no symptoms.

It's time for everyone there, from Fauci to Brix to whoever is the head of the CDC and the Surgeon General to step up and shout NO! This has got to stop. They need to smack him down.

Wasn't it the CDC that showed early on that it was absolutely a wild-type virus, and they put out a statement as such? He just showed what he thinks of them.

He needs someone else to be the bad guy and China is a perfect candidate, after all they've repeatedly pwned him in trade talks, extending their international influence, growing their economy and any number of other ways.

40% to 45% of the US electorate will believe whatever he, the right wing media and the GOP tell them to believe. If anyone stands up to him including Fauci, Brix, the Surgeon General or CDC then they'll either be fired and/or find that their activities are defunded.

It's now a matter of US government policy that the Coronavirus was produced in a Chinese lab, facts be damned. I guess the next escalation, next time that President Trump needs a squirrel, will be to claim that the virus was deliberately released by the Chinese.

Michigan could undoubtedly be doing more testing. In fact, hasn't their governor been fighting with -- and being bashed by -- president Trump over that very issue?
Governors across the country Sunday [April 19th] pushed back on the Trump administration's claims that states are conducting a "sufficient" level of coronavirus testing. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, said Michigan also has the capacity to "double or triple the number of tests we are doing, but we need some of the supplies." NBC News Link

But the chart below shows, or seems to show, despite increased testing in Michigan the percentage of those infected has remained largely the same.

And then they go on a media blitz and say what they think.

This really is a *********** response.

Big issue with these graphs is that the samples are not just random. Most of them is people already in hospitals, being tested if they are still infected. And yes, in hardest hit areas test capacities are exhausted. But usually they are not. Number of test is just reflection of number of suspected cases and number of people in hospitals. If we had number of test on suspected cases only, and % of those positive, that would be way better.

Most (all) of the states still lack enough tests. The numbers are falsely low across the US despite Trump's imaginary version we have more cases because we are testing more people.

Here are two examples from today, there are many more:

CBS News: Michigan struggles despite recent doubling of tests: "The saddest reality of a country that was under-prepared"

Madison - The Cap Times: State labs could test more COVID-19 samples but supply shortage hampers efforts

Even here in WA where we've been addressing the test shortage, there is still a shortage of swabs and not everyone who wants a test can get one, though we are almost there.

That's misleading if people who want a test are turned away. And does it differ in different areas?

That the tests are not random misses the point I was making when I wrote that the virus in Michigan seems to be especially deadly. This is the figure for people who have been confirmed to be infected with Covid-19 in Michigan and the mortality rate among them is over 9%.

That's double the rate in neighboring states -- Illinois, Indiana, Ohio (mortality rate among people who have tested positive) link -- and is a clear indicator Michigan has a especially deadly virus going around. That rate has nothing to do with testing the population as a whole. It's not random testing. It's the group of people who have tested positive for the virus and how many have died. It's not derived from the entire population or people who are asymptomatic.

The larger point is, this is the state where armed protesters entered the state house yesterday and demanded Michigan end it's lockdown. Despite polling showing the majority of Michigan residents don't want that. Despite clear evidence the virus has not only NOT plateaued in Michigan, it appears to be especially deadly.

Is breaking the law the only useful criterion for deciding if a person is good?

I would guess Bob was referring to "sees when he looks at angry lawless armed militia overtaking a state capital" not whether or not they were good
