The Trump Presidency: Part 21

Trump in action:

April 28 2020:

USA: Reported Cases, 1,010,356 Reported Deaths: 56,797
33% of the reported cases on the entire Planet.

They certainly happened very rapidly Mr President. To quote his own words from earlier today “It could have been stopped and it could have been stopped [faster] but someone a long time ago decided not to do it that way.”

Norm

Last I heard there was a 1-2% fatality rate. 56,797 would indicate there are minimally 5.6 million total cases, leaving about 4.6 million cases in the wild.

If that reasoning is correct then there are at least that many - more likely many, many more because we cannot count those cases which are neither fatal nor recovered.

Asked why Azar, the head of HHS, was still in his position after telling Americans to just go about their lives as normal at the end of January, Trump said it was an unfair question because lots of people got it wrong. Nancy Pelosi was telling "people to party in the streets" in San Fran. Ummmmm...Pelosi isn't the head of HHS. Nothing like making it political, Numb Nuts.

When asked if he believes the Dems are inflating the mortality rate as he tweeted yesterday, he danced around the question and never answered it.

Ah, so he DOES have some resemblance of shame in him. Push it! Push it!

Hans

Well, he is finally doing something about the meat issue. And what is he doing? Denying it.

I know that inspires me with great confidence.
He's not denying it. He's just letting others deny it through his Twitter feed. Totally different. Perfectly different.

Texas to open businesses in phases beginning Friday. Great job being done by @GregAbbott_TX

Many States moving to SAFELY & QUICKLY reopen!

We are doing far more, and better, Testing than any other country in the world, and yet the media does nothing but complain. No matter how good a job is done, the same as with the Ventilators, they will never say we are doing a great job, they will only viciously gripe!

My wife informs me that the Spanish Flu is so named because during the war, the involved nations didn't release news about the flu for security reasons. Spain was neutral and was transparent about its effects so it came to be associated with Spain.

Now, that's just what my wife told me and you could doubt her, but I don't have that luxury. In any case, I believe she got it from Wikipedia and so I reckon it's common knowledge. Or a pretty obscure troll. Whichever.

First case was some chap in Fort Riley in March 1918.
Not to say it didn't come in from somewhere else...but that seems to be the start point in the US.
Hate to rehash what's easily available in wikipedia. (But, I do think its probably a decent source for historical information like this.)

Nobody knows when the 'first' case actually occurred, but some possibilities:
- A british military hospital in France in 2016
- A january outbreak in Kansas
- China, with later mutations coming in the Boston area

Wikipedia

I blame Obama personally.

Yes, that is why it's called the Spanish Flu. While its origin isn't 100% clear, it didn't come from Spain. There's a good argument to be made that it originated in the US, or at the very least where the spread really started getting going.

Okay, leaving aside the issue of why he thought it was so important to point this out (quiet part quiet, natch), can we comment on how amazingly precise that data is? :D So, somewhere between 20 and 50%? I'm so glad these guys are on top of the data like this!

And if a meat shortage arrives and a reporter asks, why did you say there wasn’t going to be a meat shortage, then he’ll say somebody told me that - I was just repeating the information given to me. And then the reporter will ask, “don’t you check to see if something is true before repeating it?” and President Trump will become angry and abusive saying, “You think I have the time to check every re-tweet for truthfulness! You’re just a failing reporter from a failing TV station!”

And then all the Republican Congressfolk will have to give non-answers when they are asked about the absurdity of a world leader not having the resources to check things before re-tweeting them.

And the faithful will hear the whole exchange and say, “that person is a failing reporter from a failing TV station. Such disrespect for the president! No one should be that disrespectful to the president.”

.
This whole thing will not end well.

Ah yes, diamond and silk... the duo that are currently so toxic that Fox News seems to be breaking ties with them...

From: Fox News Cuts Ties With Diamond & Silk (daily beast)
Fox News has cut ties with MAGA vlogging superstars Diamond & Silk...The sudden split comes after the Trump-boosting siblings have come under fire for promoting conspiracy theories and disinformation about the coronavirus....the duo claimed that the number of American coronavirus deaths has been inflated to make Trump look bad...Silk, meanwhile, baselessly asserted that the disease was “man-made”

I think that speaks volumes about Trump....

A pair of celebrities considered so bat-crap insane that even Fox news (an organization that continues to employ intellectual light-weights like Sean "And now a car crash" Hannity and Hiraldo "You can test for Coronavirus by holding your breath" Rivera) seems to want to avoid them. Yet Trump (the man who is in theory "in charge") seems to be supporting them.

In a sense, it doesn’t matter which explanation is correct because if it is called the Spanish Flu because Spain had the highest reported figures, then this has to be named the US Flu because the US has the highest reported figures.

Fox were willing to carry their lies and insanity for 18 months, and to feature them on their network. Apparently, they've now decided that they're a liability because they've gotten too far "out there." If I let somebody live in my house for 18 months while I know that they're going out and setting fires, and then kick them out five minutes before the cops show up to arrest them, that doesn't suddenly make me innocent. Fox News has lots of blood and destruction on its hands, they're only a small part of it.

No. His handlers walkied into the Oval Office and said, “we tested this statement with focus groups and if you ever repeat it, your ratings will go down. Do you understand me?”

President Trump doesn’t do shame.

At some point, where these people are finally taking action on things we've been warning them about for months or years, it would be nice if they'd acknowledge that maybe we had a point when we were complaining earlier.

Of course, that would require them to admit an error, so it will never happen, but it would be nice if it did.

First, there is no shortage of meat destined for the grocery store shelf.
It might take stores longer than usual to restock certain products, due to supply chain disruptions. But we have many millions of pounds of meat in cold storage across the nation.

There's going to be a shortage of meat.
