The Trump Presidency: Part 21

"You all know what happened in 1917. That's over 100 years ago."

"I think you will see a lot of schools open up, even for a short period of time ... in terms of what this vicious virus goes after, young people seem to do very well."

"Nancy Pelosi was dancing in the streets in Chinatown. She wanted to go out and party."

"If you look, prior to this virus, the deficit was coming down under my administration."

Trump on his call today with governors: "These were not complaining people. These were people that were -- they had everything they needed. They have their ventilators. They have their testing."

"There are some people, they are not allowed to open up their store. They're going to lose their livelihood. By the way, that causes death also"

Oh, he's gunning for the Noble Prize in sarcasm.

Rick Scott from Florida had a similar question-

My question would be- when hurricane season comes along, are Trump and Scott going to think that's a fair question to ask if (when) Florida gets hit? If having a federal government means anything, it should mean not having to ask these sort of question at all during a time of crisis, whether it's a pandemic or a storm creating it.

My question would be "WTF, FOOL?" On a quick check, by ratio, Florida gets over $4.50 in the way of federal government assistance for every $1 they pay to the federal government.

Yes, though, you have a point, albeit one that relies on "fairness" and "patriotism." You might have noticed, but actual "fairness" and actual "patriotism" are not really things that Republicans tend to value, especially if the Republicans in question are politicians. Hence Republicans fighting against disaster aid when it would go to blue states, consistently, and fighting for it when it comes to red states. Democrats, of course, fight for it whenever disasters occur.

To poke elsewhere...

Turns out Carnival Cruise Line got a backdoor multibillion-dollar bailout from the federal reserve

*sigh*

Shouldn't the media say something when POTUS shows up with pupils the size of pie tins?

But... why would they?

@Horatius Agreed

.....
When I was young they told us anyone can grow up to be president.
These days you don’t even have to grow up in order to be president.

Given that the 1918 flu pandemic began in the US should the the world start calling it US flu? Is the US government to blame for failing to control the 1918 flu pandemic?

If I was given the opportunity to ask a question to Trump at a press conference those are currently top of my list.

Did it begin in the US? I thought I had read something indicating it might have begun in China as well. In any case, I'm not sure the rule is actually "where it originates", otherwise we would have to keep renaming old illnesses as we got more information and nobody would know what was being referred to. It being called the Spanish Flu is a pretty clear indication of that. This kind of naming goes back before anybody could tell with certainty where diseases really came from anyway...

All the early reporting was about a virus in China or Wuhan, that is how it got its name. The only way it is changing is if one country or region gets so disproportionately wiped out by it that it becomes more associated with it in the public mind.

Trump's deterioration is apparently contagious o.O .

sorry was typing with wrong hand and medicinal scotch. I have smashed my arm up when I went in to a tree with my mountain bike on a downhill single track through Guisborough Forest

I'm going to start asking this every time some edgy YouTube commenter calls it the Chinese/Wuhan virus. I'm prepared for spinning and deflections.

The Attorney General is right. We can’t forget freedom during the #coronavirus crisis.

This is a pathetic failure of leadership and so typical of the GOP in general and President Trump in particular.

They're trying to pressure states to relax the lockdown measures, but in a way that ensures that the states are responsible if that relaxation results in an increase in Coronavirus cases. As with everything else, it it goes well then they will claim the credit and it if goes badly, they will shirk responsibility.

First, there is no shortage of meat destined for the grocery store shelf.
It might take stores longer than usual to restock certain products, due to supply chain disruptions. But we have many millions of pounds of meat in cold storage across the nation.

Very fair point, 2-3 percent isn't a big difference, so "freefall" was probably the wrong term. I was referring more to how steeply the curve was descending, especially during a crisis that should have gotten Trump lots of free popularity, just for doing his job (look at the massive spike Bush II enjoyed after 9/11).

Which he of course isn't. Couldn't. Won't.

Well, I suppose I was also being tediously pedantic.

Frankly, I am pleasantly surprised that Trump didn't get the usual approval boost in a crisis. I doubt that his faithful have had any significant doubts but at least those who are ambivalent about Trump aren't rallying behind his lies and deceit in this significant event.

My wife informs me that the Spanish Flu is so named because during the war, the involved nations didn't release news about the flu for security reasons. Spain was neutral and was transparent about its effects so it came to be associated with Spain.

Now, that's just what my wife told me and you could doubt her, but I don't have that luxury. In any case, I believe she got it from Wikipedia and so I reckon it's common knowledge. Or a pretty obscure troll. Whichever.

I have heard the same story. Seems plausible enough.

Well, I'm sure we'll all be alright eating Theoretical Cold Storage Meat, those days that the shelves are empty of actual meat.

Do these guys ever think even one sentence ahead? It doesn't matter how much meat you have in Place A if it's needed in Place B, and you can't get it there.

Well, he is finally doing something about the meat issue. And what is he doing? Denying it.

I know that inspires me with great confidence.

First case was some chap in Fort Riley in March 1918.
Not to say it didn't come in from somewhere else...but that seems to be the start point in the US.
