They should be, but a lot of them aren't. They're going out of their way to find reasons why his utterances were just perfect, you're the idiot for not understanding him, do your own research, such a great leader!
They tell you to watch the video for yourself, while telling you the video shows things that it just doesn't. "He was asking the reporters a question!", when he was clearly addressing the doctors sitting off stage, 90 degrees away from the reporters sitting in front of him. "He never said inject disinfectant!" when he clearly did. "He wasn't talking about disinfecting, he was talking about fancy machines that can filter your blood!", which is just clearly made up.
All because, unlike 99.9% of the population, he was incapable of defusing the disinfectant disaster by wryly laughing and saying something like, "It was a senior moment, folks. Yeah, don't try ingesting much less injecting disinfectant. Sorry about that."
And that's the thing. In an ongoing discussion of treating surfaces, treating patients, using disinfectants, injecting drugs, and what not, it's totally plausible that you might say "inject patients with disinfectant" when you meant to say, "treat patients with disinfectant", like as a bath, but you just had a slip of the tongue. After all, there are lots of real treatments like hemorrhoid creams and acne creams that work as a surface treatment but would be very bad to eat or inject.
But he couldn't just cop to a mistake. His followers couldn't just cop to a mistake. No,
we're the mistake, he's perfect!
And that's exactly what you don't want in a leader during a major crisis.
