The Trump Presidency: Part 21

Trump demands that Post Office quadruple its rates -- or else.
President Trump said Friday he would not approve an emergency loan for the U.S. Postal Service if it did not immediately raise its prices for package delivery.

“The Postal Service is a joke,” Trump told reporters responding to a Washington Post report on the Treasury Department’s plans to extract concessions from USPS in exchange for a line of credit Congress approved to aide the agency during the coronavirus pandemic. "The Post office should raise the price [of package delivery] four times.”

Dr Birx evidently doesn't. Link is to a video close up (at Mashable) of her reactions as Trump begins riffing- see if you can spot the exact moment when she goes from just "wait, what now?" to thinking damn near out loud "omg, this guy is a ******* moron." I'd say right around 0:27.
She is thinking: "I am watching my whole distinguished career disappearing down his gold-plated crapper right now and I can do nothing about it unless I resign tonight. No, right this minute."

Not many businessmen have managed to bankrupt Casinos. Even fewer have run national postal services into the ground, but Trump is about to check that box, too  !

ETA: oh, and why the need to distract from Covid-19 all of a sudden? I thought it was a Dem hoax that would go away miraculously and no one's done more than he and it was bigly effective to close the border with Gina and that he was on top of things and that his advice to drink or inject hand sanitizer was just to trigger the libs? Why take evasive action now that he's doing so well against the very smart invisible enemy?

Oh, was that why he put on the whole "just thinking out loud" facade? Because he didn't want to credit anyone else with coming up with the idea?
At this point, he believes that personally curing the virus is the only way he can salvage anything out of his self-inflicted quagmire. He believes this because he knows for certain he's incapable of actually working hard, learning everything available about the issue, making correct recommendations, and using his words to inspire the nation in a way that makes us all feel better as we suffer through this crisis.

The best he can do is just vomit up whatever nonsense pops into his head while taking dumps on those he considers his enemies. One might think he was infected with E. coli...

He can't even come up with his own stupid ideas.
He never could. All the "smart financial dodges" used by his businesses in the past were the brainwaves of faceless accounting geniuses hired to hide his money. Trump hasn't the foggiest how to write a check let alone run a devious empire. He doesn't read and he has flunkies who give him stuff to sign.

He simply latches on to the last idea that someone told him that gets eyes back on him. He does that at his rallies too - lists some talking topics until the audience responds, then riffs on those. It's juvenile attention-seeking behaviour (actually, more like publicly ******** on stage - horrific but unmissable). This bleach idea has given him column-inches and tweet-likes again, and eyes away from Cuomo and Birx. That's all he wanted.

This sounds like you're saying that even when Trump loses he wins. I don't think that's true, nor helpful. Trump really messed up. People have died, and more will die. He's to blame. Never forget that.

I have enough trust in the American people to believe you will get rid of him this fall, if not sooner. After you do, you need lock him up and throw away the key. Make an example of him.

Define "winning". For Trump, it's notoriety, by any means fair or foul. For the rest of the human race, you are absolutely right. He's an oxygen-thief.

Uh, he's not mine. I'm not American. But I'm 110% with you in that sentiment. And I suspect most of the USA is now, too.

If the post office quadruples (hell, even just doubles) their rates, wouldn't that make them uncompetitive with UPS, Fed X, et al? Thus hastening their demise?

I would not be surprised if Birx and Fauci have some very critical remarks to make about Trump once he is out of office or they retire. They will certainly have some very interesting things to say about his conduct/leadership, etc concerning the pandemic.

I'm really looking forward to today's presser. People ask why I bother watching them. Yesterday is why.

Wouldn't that be incredibly unpopular with the electorate?

This would have the largest effect on the rural communities. And the elderly community, who still pays most of their bills by mailing a check.

It would have almost no effect on me. I send almost nothing and get almost nothing worthwhile in the mail. My mom, otoh, can't live without her mail (she didn't go to the nursing home with my dad during coronavirus because she was worried about not being able to get her mail)

That's the plan. Completely privatizing the PO has been a Repub goal since long before Trump arrived, and Trump hates it because it delivers Amazon packages.

.....

And they also get a lot of their medications by mail. Maybe this will be the straw that wakes the Trumpers up.
