Trump made the remark after Bill Bryan, a Department of Homeland Security official who leads the department's Science and Technology division gave a presentation on research his team has conducted that shows the virus does not live as long in warmer and more humid temperatures. Bryan said, “the virus dies quickest in sunlight.”

While sunlight does kill the virus, he doesn't say how long it must be exposed to the light or at what intensity (cloudy vs. sunny days)

After weirdly asking about injecting disinfectant or sunlight into the body, Trump didn't stop there:

At the same time that his own government is urging people to stay in their homes to slow the spread of coronavirus, Trump seized upon DHS’s preliminary finding that sunlight helps kill the virus and said, “I think a lot of people are gonna go outside all of the sudden.”

He then attacked Washington Post reporter Philip Rucker after Rucker advised him, “People tuning into these briefings — they want to get information and guidance and want to know what to do. They’re not looking for rumors.”

“I’m the president and you’re fake news,” Trump said, adding that his comments “are just a suggestion.”

Why do I not find this surprising?

I just watched Anderson Cooper talk to Dr. Stephen Hahn, the head of the FDA. When Cooper asked him about Trump's statements about injecting disinfectants and getting light into the body to kill the C-virus, you could see him desperately trying not to say anything that might anger Trump. There was so much tap dancing going on I thought I was watching an old Gene Kelly movie. He eventually said he didn't suggest either. Watching all this was Dr. Sanjay Gupta who could barely hold back a laugh or keep his face straight at Hahn's discomfiture.

The virus does not last long without some moisture in its coating. Sunlight provides energy that helps dry out the coating and deactivates the virus that way.

(It doesn't mean its any sort of a "cure"... just means that if you are outside and touch a surface, its a little safer than if you're inside and touch a surface.)

Oh I know.. Trump is wrong on that (as he is on so many things).

Just wanted to point out that there may be some validity to the idea that sunlight can kill the virus.

You're right.... His approval ratings have dropped from the high-40s (even hitting 52% in late february) to ~44% now.

Maybe it has something to do with their polling methods... they make more use of land-lines than other polling organizations, which might mean older people are more represented (compared to younger people who rely on cell phones). But older people seem to be turning on Trump. (Trump's response to Covid-19 might be turning some of them against him, and now that the Democrats have their own old guy as the candidate, some voters might want to switch from the Republican old white man to the Democratic old white man.)

Since old farts (like me ) tend to turn out at a higher rate than the kids, such a bias might actually give more accurate results.

I decided to take a look at the live press conference today. I started watching just as he was suggesting to inject people with disinfectant and UV light. Just when I thought he could not get any more stupid. I can't believe how stupid he is. I just hope some idiot doesn't hear him say it and start injecting themselves with bleach or go bake themselves in a tanning bed thinking it will cure/prevent Coronavirus.

What is just as bad is that Pence and others just let it happen. They stand by while he spews this nonsense. If there was ever a time for the 25th amendment to be invoked, this is it.
