The Trump Presidency: Part 21

Trump: Why do you say he has great gifts? Do you know him? Have you reviewed him? Have you studied him?
Reporter: He worked his entire career developing vaccines
Trump: That doesn’t mean he has gifts. I know a lot of people who play baseball who can’t hit 150

What thread is that? Please start one, because from what I have seen an uncontrolled pandemic has it's own economic impacts, and many of the health impacts of a poor economy also occur in a pandemic, such as suicides and stress.

There isn't one. Which of your statements above contradict the observations I made? We are between the devil and the deep blue sea, and have to maneuver very delicately. Something I very much doubt the Trump administration is capable of. (Thus bringing this back on topic ;) )

Honestly, it'd be so funny if the reporters stooped to Trump's Level of absurdity once or twice.

Trump: why do you say he's got great gifts?

Reporter: dude, you don't know nothing, brother nincompoop, I seen his gifts. I been gotten his gifts. Oh, they were the biggest gifts, fool, one of my CNN friends, he got a piano! Oh you can tell he spent an hour wrapping that *****. My sister, oh, I bet you wish you could have laid her, she the hottest, but she wants nothnig to do with you, she got a pony, and god, that pony was more radiant than Obama at his peak. Me? I been shilling for MSM for so long and got ratings so high, I got a truck! Would you believe it? A truck! And you know what? It was a Chinese truck!

Trump: :confused orange Pikachu:

I'd like to see reporters point out more of Trump's "Memory issues".

Reporter: You once said you have a great memory, but you have forgotten that you held campaign rallies in March. Is this a sign that you are suffering from dementia?

The reporter would only get as far as "Dude, you don't know noth--" before Trump would interrupt him with "Excuse me.. EXCUSE ME!!! I know more about the virus, the Invisible Enemy as I call it, this scoooorge, than the doctors know. OK?"

Now that Trump has claimed he didn't hold rallies in February and March even people who attended them will back him on it.

Meanwhile, I can't help but find Trump tossing Brian Kemp under the bus utterly hilarious.

What's up with Rasmussen? They're suddenly getting terrible poll numbers for Trump.
You're right.... His approval ratings have dropped from the high-40s (even hitting 52% in late february) to ~44% now.

https://www.rasmussenreports.com/pu...p_administration/trump_approval_index_history

Maybe it has something to do with their polling methods... they make more use of land-lines than other polling organizations, which might mean older people are more represented (compared to younger people who rely on cell phones). But older people seem to be turning on Trump. (Trump's response to Covid-19 might be turning some of them against him, and now that the Democrats have their own old guy as the candidate, some voters might want to switch from the Republican old white man to the Democratic old white man.)

This gives me hope that he'll be defeated in November. If even the polling system set up to provide artificially inflated pro-Trump numbers can't deliver those numbers, he's got to be hurting really badly in reality.

I fixed your link. Please see The Campaign for Good Linking

(This is the only time I'll ever do this in this thread. It's terribly close to a violation of rules 6 and 11 as it is, and doing it more than once will certainly get me sanctioned.)

Wow. Five Thirty Eight shows him taking a massive plunge. This is unpresidented, a head of state's popularity dropping like a stone during a major crisis (stating the obvious, I know). It's gone up and down his whole presidency, obviously, and so far he "only" seems to be losing most of the goodwill he gained when corona was first recognized as a crisis, but the current hit seems bigger than the previous ones he's taken.

Here's hoping it continues to plummet like a stone :3 .

Please, please, please. It's the only thing that can restore my faith in humanity, which actually has never been very strong.

Wow, those graphs are really annoying. Green is approval in the big one, but is apparently disapproval in the little ones, based on the 9/11 spike for GWB.

Well, I wouldn't say its a massive drop... his approval rating is down around 2% over the past half-month or so, but he's had similar drops in the past. (And his popularity is still far above what it was at the end of 2017.

Yes, normally leaders at the time of crisis see a substantial increase in support (which Trump hasn't), but those other leaders tend to be at least partly competent (which Trump is not). But his popularity is still annoyingly close to his average over the past few years, despite screw-up after screw-up,

I still think that overall Trump is at a disadvantage... he seems to play exclusively to his base (without adding many new voters), and has annoyed enough of his former supporters that he may lose his slim margin of victory in certain battleground states. The big problem is how Covid-19 will affect the election, and whether Republicans will be able to use it to suppress the vote for Democrats.

I'm colorblind. The lines in the big graph appear to be the same color. The lines in every other graph are different, I'm guessing red and green?

Virtually every graph in which there are more than 2 candidates is unreadable to me, as they make zero effort to pick colors that could be differentiated if you don't have full spectrum vision (brighter colors vs dimmer colors, light or dark, use dashes, dots, or stripes to make differences, etc)

In the coronavirus task force briefing Wednesday, President Trump said that the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels and the Air Force's Thunderbirds would be doing flyovers of major American cities in honor of "American medical workers" — and that on July Fourth he would bring back the Independence Day celebration held last year on the National Mall.

I'm excited to announce that in the coming weeks, the Air Force Thunderbirds – are incredible – and the Navy Blue Angels, equally incredible, will be performing air shows over America's major cities. What we're doing is we're paying tribute to our front line health care workers confronting COVID. And it's really a signal to all Americans to remain vigilant during the outbreak. This is a tribute to them, to our warriors. Because they are equal warriors to those incredible pilots and all of the fighters that we have for the more traditional fights that we win and we win.

Green and orange, but I believe you can toggle it to only show approval, or only disapproval.

No, though that confused me too at first. The black in the small graphs is that president's approval rating. The green is Trump's approval rating, for comparison. Notice how the green line is the same in every one of the small graphs. Hovering your mouse over them shows you a legend that tells you what the colours mean as well as exact numbers for each date.

eta2 If I'm allowed to ask just one OT question, what on Earth did Jimmy Carter do towards the end of his presidency to make his popularity plummet all the way down to 20%?

And the cost to taxpayers will be...?
