The Trump Presidency: Part 20

It doesn't matter what her "tone" was (whatever that means). Trump was worse in pretty much every possible way. "I'd rather vote for this racist con-artist who is such a bad businessman that he bankrupted multiple casinos just because I don't like Hillary's tone" seems like a pretty dumb argument to make.

And what exactly does 'tone' mean in this context? Did she come right out and say "I deserve to be president"? Its an election.. the whole point of it is to show "I'm better than my opponent".

Anyone complaining about Hillary's "tone" as the reason they supported Trump is probably just trying to slap a fig-leaf on their stupidity/racism.

Their "protest vote" should have gone to say "we protest racist con-artists", instead of just some vague "anti-establishment". But that's just me.

You are right... she should have gone to Michigan, etc. It was one of the things that happened that really was her mistake.

But unless they were living in a cave for the previous year, most voters were probably already acutely aware of the policies and personal qualities of both the candidates. Voters should have recognized how damaging Trump could have been even without a personal visit from Clinton.

Well said.

I watched all 3 of the Trump/Clinton debates and she ran rings around him. Remember the debates that Trump declared he'd won despite every major poll finding Clinton won?

Trump at today's rally: "They develop drugs like the antibiotics. You see it. Antibiotics used to solve every problem. Now one of the biggest problems the world has is the germ has gotten too brilliant that the antibiotic can't keep up with it."

:jaw-dropp

Does the Idiot know that antibiotics don't work against viruses?

Maybe we need to stop allowing germs to attend higher education. Maybe trade schools? Definitely keep them out of schools like Wharton. We've seen the geniuses that come out of that school.

I am sure there are people who thought "She'll win, don't need to vote for her". They were foolish. Which is one of the worries many people have about the American political system. Dumb, foolish, racist voters.

We need to keep reminding people that voting is like doing a group project in school: You know half h your team are lazy ***** who won't do the work, so if you don't do it, it doesn't get done.

Oh, god, please tell me this is part of your shtick.

Well, ****.

Trump told this afternoon's briefing:
People go to a hospital and they catch — they go for a heart operation, that’s no problem, and they end up dying from problems,” Trump says. “You know the problems I’m talking about.”

I do?

It's not just the U.S. and Europe, either. Right wing populists groups have gained in Australia, Brazil, India, Japan, Israel, Pakistan and Thailand.

I'll speculate on the big picture here. I associate the rise of populists groups with the rise of waves of immigrants from distressed areas. Prime examples are Central America to the USA and North Africans across the Mediterranean Sea. Such movements are natural fodder for populists to exploit the fear of "outsiders". After all, tribalism is built into the human brain and fear is a very powerful motivator.

If this is true, it bodes poorly for the future when extreme overpopulation and climate change combine to cause mass movements of people that will make our era look like a walk in the park. Between ethnic strife, food shortages and fear mongering by authoritarian leaders, it's a bloodbath is just waiting to happen.

Good point. Don't forget the Eastern Europeans moving to Western Europe. An acquaintance in England complains a lot about them. According to her, they brought in crime, take jobs from from the English and are unhygienic.

Except we know they did.

We know for example that:
- Trump violated campaign finance laws by paying off Stormy Daniels
- Republicans often engage in voter suppression
- While Mueller didn't find evidence of direct coordination between Russian interests and the Trump campaign, they did display a willingness to work together, and made use of information obtained from Russian hacks

<snip>
Not to mention, there was the issue of the FBI New York field office leaking anti-Clinton material to GOP operatives. Both Devin Nunes and Rudy Giuliani were told that Comey would be reopening the investigation, with Giuliani even being rather candid about recieving the information from active FBI agents.

(Of course, when he realised this might not be a good thing to be saying in public, he changed his tune, claiming that by 'active agents', he meant 'retired agents who were still physically active' )

That would be a perfectly reasonable explanation.............................
.................................................................................................................................................................................if I were a Trump supporter.

REPORTER: What metrics will you use to decide when to reopen [the country]?

TRUMP: "The metrics right here." [Trump points to his head]

“That’s my metrics…I didn’t think of it until yesterday I said ‘You know this is a big decision'…Without question it’s the biggest decision I’ve ever had to make."

We are so ******.
He didn’t think of it until yesterday?!

....
ETA
If he were culturally literate and if he were a quick thinker, he could have said, “What are my metrics, **** you, that’s my metrics.”

I heard this live in the car on CNN.

I assumed when he said “The metrics right here”, he was motioning at Fauci and Birks et al.

It wasn’t until I got home and saw the clip on Twitter that I realized maybe invoking “The Principle of Charity” is inappropriate in Trump’s case.

There are times when I read one of these "Trump said this today...." quotes, and for a while I would go look it up because my first thought was, "That's too stupid. It had to be taken out of context."

I've learned. I won't bother verifying that it happened just like you described it.

Stupidity doesn't bother me so much, but the fact that anti-intellectualism is considered a virtue really does bother me. There are people who would watch that performance and think Trump gave a good answer to that question.

Expanding on the "metrics" issue, I know I, for one, have been hoping to hear just that. I've expressed it differently, but I've been hoping to hear what his plan really is. Ease restrictions when the number of new cases is down to X per day, and our testing capability is up to Y, either as an absolute number or per day. That's what I think he ought to be saying.

Well, today, he confirmed that we will never hear that, because he just makes it up as he goes along. He goes with his feels.

That's really bad.

That is the crux of the matter. Whatever pops into his head at the time he just says. There is no filter. That is what children do.

I'm not sure why a reporter would even bother asking what metrics he would use to open up the country. As far as I can tell, the country is not Trump's to open up. The NCAA and pro sports leagues probably did more to affect the course of events than Trump ever could have.

I am on lockdown on a campus for the elderly starting at noon tomorrow. It's owned by the United Church of Christ (Congregationalists). As a group I think it's safe to say that they despise Trump, but that's irrelevant. This place has a great reputation; an international reputation when it comes to dementia care, but that's not the part I live in. I provide support for my mother who has dementia to continue living in her apartment. I don't think these folks are acting on a hunch. Trump would be. Why even bother asking questions? Wish the press would just boycott these briefings.

Like others I haven't been in my car much but had to take my dog for shots today. I started to listen to Trump but couldn't get past him saying how great it was that Mexico had thousands of troops on the U.S. border to keep people from leaving. I said out loud, "How can anyone tolerate this oaf?" Had to turn the radio off. Maybe the transcript isn't up because nobody wants it up. Maybe the adults in the room finally told Trump to STFU.

It's talk radio, but the local folks will criticize Trump during drive time. I wouldn't be able to stand listening to Limbaugh or his ilk.
