The Trump Presidency: Part 20

I recall claims during the first gulf war that Kuwaiti children had been dumped out of crucial medical incubators and the incubators stolen by the invading Iraqis. This was of course viewed by the USA and the rest of the world as a horrible war crime. Thankfully these claims turned out to be false (manufactured by the Kuwaiti government). Sadam was not quite that evil. But I am now fearful that my own government is that evil. There must be an investigation to determine the truth and, if proven, punish the guilty.

Fearful? Do you happen to recall this?

'A Death Sentence': Trump Reportedly Moving to Deport Kids With Cancer, HIV, and Other Deadly Illnesses

"This is a new low for Trump. The administration is now literally deporting kids with cancer."

I'm not sure that "fearful" has been on the table for a while. Then, of course, there is the whole "Let's split up families and weaponize that to try to deter Central Americans from trying to come to the US." Crimes against humanity have been ongoing.

At least Trump's not talked about how we should be preparing for ebola blankets left at the border in a while. Just worked hard to destroy programs that let poor kids actually get food.

Can I please make a general request that people fill in the location in their profile with at least the name of their country? It's always been useful information, if only to tell you what time zone they're in so you know you might have to wait for the answer to a question you just asked them, but at the moment it's absence is actually very annoying. A poster says what's happening "here", you look across to see where they are, and they haven't bothered to tell you! I know there are fewer posters than there used to be, but there are still enough to make it impossible to keep track of where everyone lives from memory alone.

Pretty please?

As you wish. :D

Ehh, on the kids front, I figure it's worth a momentary poke at...

The Trump Administration vs. Children

A new report shows how the most innocent are collateral damage in the war against science being waged by the president and his agencies

and

Trump’s War on Children
White House policies form an unprecedented assault on kids—but, of course, not the white kids.

Much as that's title's a bit misleading because a heck of a lot of white kids are in a much worse position because of the Trump Administration.

Because I literally just read this opinion piece, I think I'll poke at it.

Daniel Kelly is in the fight of his life. As a prosecutor and judge, Karofsky has focused on protecting the vulnerable, particularly those subjected to domestic violence and sexual assault crimes. She passionately advocates for criminal justice reform.

Alternatively, the incumbent, Kelly, is a right-wing extremist who has been enthusiastically endorsed by Donald Trump for overwhelmingly dispensing judgments in a partisan manner, even overturning precedent. It was this right-wing court that infamously carried out Walker’s plan to gut union bargaining rights.

Worst of all, this judicial election has national consequences, because Trump and his cronies are proposing a monumental purge of Wisconsin voters using suspect data. If Kelly wins, the Wisconsin Supreme Court will no doubt allow the suppression of Democratic-leaning voters. Trump needs Wisconsin to win, and the GOP knows this.

This is yet another reason the GOP blatantly fought to force people to vote in-person tomorrow, and force Wisconsin to throw out all absentee ballots arriving after tomorrow.

To be clear, many people still haven’t even received their mail-in ballots yet, so their only choice is risking their life to vote tomorrow in person, or give up their sacred right to vote.

We are facing a pandemic that we haven’t seen in over 100 years, yet the conservatives on the US Supreme Court were dead-set against the reasonable accommodation to extend the absentee arrival deadline to April 13th. Now, the day before the election, SCOTUS is ordering ballots to be discarded, even though voters in Wisconsin were told that they had until April 13th.

<snip>

There will only be five polling stations in the entire city of Milwaukee, a city of 600,000 people, and many poll workers are refusing to work citing their personal safety. The governor is ordering the National Guard to serve in this capacity. It’s utter madness.

Then there's this:
Results from a controlled clinical trial from China on the use of hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for Covid-19 have shown no significant differences in health outcomes between the control group and patients who received the experimental drug.

Meh.

Forbes is notorious as a Trump hating, left-wing, fake news site.

Their liberal agenda is clear. They can be easily disregarded.

Something occurred to me today, about when Trump confused "domestic violence" and "Mexican violence" during a recent press conference. I'd wager that most of the "domestics" (servants) he's known in his life have been Mexican, so it's natural for him to associate the two words. He may have even thought they were synonyms. :D

I suspect that he views nearly everyone as servants to some degree.

But your conjecture has merit.

Help me out here:

Why is no one separating Trump and Pence? Should not the President and Vice-President be separated during this national emergency?

Are they not even considering that either or both of them could contract COVID-19... and die??
Are they TRYING to set up a scenario by which President Pelosi takes the helm???

I can only hope that they keep McConnell closeted closely with them for lots of meetings.

.....
Good on him for pushing it. I'm confident Barack Obama would have done the same, based on the preliminary assessments. Obama would have just waited to declare victory until he had actual data, instead of the hints that are still dribbling out.

The point is that actual scientists are actively testing dozens of possible covid treatments. They don't need and aren't helped by Dear Leader promoting one unproven and potentially dangerous drug based on what Fox news tells him. No, Obama would never have pulled something like that.

Nearly 70 drugs and experimental compounds may be effective in treating the coronavirus, a team of researchers reported on Sunday night.

Some of the medications are already used to treat other diseases, and repurposing them to treat Covid-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus, may be faster than trying to invent a new antiviral from scratch, the scientists said.
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/22/science/coronavirus-drugs-chloroquine.html

He hears about the controversial anti-malarial drug on the phone from friends in New York, including from his personal attorney Rudolph W. Giuliani. He hears about it in White House meetings from some advisers eager to please the boss, who share anecdotes of the drug working on covid-19 patients. And he hears about it on television, from physicians on Fox News Channel panels who tout its efficacy.

In fact, Fox host Laura Ingraham and two doctors who are regular on-air guests in what she dubs her “medicine cabinet” visited the White House last Friday for a private meeting with Trump to talk up the drug, according to two White House officials and another person familiar with the meeting.

Never mind that hydroxychloroquine is an unproven treatment for covid-19 and is still in the testing stages, or that it has dangerous side effects for some, or that medical professionals are divided on its capability. The infectious-disease expert on Trump’s coronavirus task force, Anthony S. Fauci, has privately pleaded with the president to be more cautious.

Forbes published its new list of richest people.
More than 1,000 people are richer than Trump, even when generously estimating his wealth at 2bn+.

Exactly! It’s not as if tens of thousands of health experts and hundreds of thousands of researchers had not already thought, “Hey, a treatment for covid-19 might be a good idea. Let’s look into it.” Nor was the idea of first looking at existing drugs for their activity against covid-19. Research labs in governments, pharmaceutical companies, foundations, and universities throughout the world have taken up the challenge.

The problem is that this work needs to be unbiased and performed at the most rigorous standards. A false hope based on incomplete, rushed studies can prove useless in real life, or even poison people itself. People die unnecessarily both ways. Worse still is the likelihood a false hope will slow or distract from the development of a real drug.

Perhaps hydroxychloroquine is effective. Great. Or not, which will soon be fully determined. But now the Trump administration has managed to politicize even drugs. “Are you with them or not? Pro Trump you support the drug. Question the drug and you are questioning Trump.”

Red drugs vs blue drugs... This is not how you battle disease.

Virologist #1: Okay, I'm testing the new sample, and--
Trump: Hey!
Virologist #2: Uh, we're a bit busy at the moment.
Trump: Yeah, but hey! Hey! I have an idea!
Virologist #1 : ...Yes?
Trump: They say, people are saying, there's this. People say, 'Sir, you know so much!'. About this medicine, this terrific, beautiful medicine. Hydro..chlor...quap.......adeen.
Virologist #2: ....Okay, we'll, uh, look into that. Soon.
Trump: It's perfect! A perfect, the best... tremendous medicine! Fix it up, I'll have GM make a bunch! They'll say how great I am, I mean, how great it is. The hypoxatone..adine.
Virologist #1: Mmmmm hmmmm. I'm typing it up on my invisible typewriter right now!
Trump: Number one! The best! [waddles off, beaming]
Virologist #2: He wasn't even wearing a mask...
Virologist #1: Forget masks, his fly was undone.

Exactly. I am extremely confident Obama would have pushed for trials of anything that showed promise. From what I read, Chloroquine is one such drug. Obama wouldn't have picked a favorite and yapped all over the telly about it being a game changer, he would have used his power to push forward in a promising direction, and in several directions at once, I'm sure, with other treatments.

Trump, by contrast, saw something that he heard in the media about some miracle cure, latched onto it, and made it all about himself. I'm sure that when it turns out that it isn't a miracle cure, he will deny he ever said it was.

So now we have a situation where trials of a drug are politically controversial. That's really unfortunate. From what information I can get, jumbled through the media, it seems that Chloroquine might help to some extent, but it isn't a "game changer". That's better than nothing, although even that really needs confirmation.

The Trump administration decision last summer to end the Medical Deferred Action immigration program ("allowing persons subject to deportation to remain in the U.S. for two-year periods if they can prove extreme medical need") was apparently reversed by the administration shortly thereafter.
Last Thursday [Sept. 19, 2019), the U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced that it would reinstate the medical deferred action program it had quietly terminated only weeks earlier. Under the long-standing policy, some individuals may receive permission to remain temporarily in the country while they or their family members receive medical treatment or participate in clinical trials for life-threatening conditions. Link

However, at the same time advocates applauded the decision to reinstate Medical Deferred Action, they were also critical of the Trump administration for having taken this action in the first place:
The lack of transparency and humanity displayed by the administration—which received significant pressure from members of Congress and the public before it agreed to reverse course—illustrates how the Trump administration has systematically dismantled the basic tools that past administrations of both parties have relied upon to achieve some semblance of a workable, humane immigration system out of our fundamentally broken system.

To have suddenly taken this action and then just as suddenly reversed it illustrates the overall lack of planning that has become a hallmark of the Trump presidency.

To be clear, I'm cool with Trump and Pence getting incapacitated from the 'rona and riding out the rest of 2020 with #PresidentPelosi.

What I don't understand is why the Secret Service hasn't stepped in to separate them "out of an abundance of caution" or something. Is there not a single grown-up in the White House?
