The website that said the federal stockpile was for states has been amended to reflect Kusher's statement. Coincidence......right?

Actually it never said otherwise. It has always said exactly what Trump's crew said.

Sort of like, when reporters quote him verbatim, he says, "I never said that."

Seriously, this is what was changed:

Original:

As reporters quickly noted, that didn’t match with how the Department of Health and Human Services was describing the program. On its website, it said, “Strategic National Stockpile is the nation’s largest supply of life-saving pharmaceuticals and medical supplies for use in a public health emergency severe enough to cause local supplies to run out.” It continued to say, "When state, local, tribal, and territorial responders request federal assistance to support their response efforts, the stockpile ensures that the right medicines and supplies get to those who need them most during an emergency.”

to:
“The Strategic National Stockpile’s role is to supplement state and local supplies during public health emergencies,” it now says. “Many states have products stockpiled, as well. The supplies, medicines, and devices for life-saving care contained in the stockpile can be used as a short-term stopgap buffer when the immediate supply of adequate amounts of these materials may not be immediately available.”

Also in the article:

“Few U.S. state or local governments have the resources to create sufficient pharmaceutical stockpiles on their own,” the report says. “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, under U.S. Congressional mandate, has developed and implemented a National Pharmaceutical Stockpile (NPS) to address this need.”
In other words, the program was designed to supplement the states and deliver supplies to them that, according to this U.S. government document, they won’t have because of budgetary constraints.

I believe the spinning of Orwell's grave is now so severe it's causing the magnetic pole to shift more quickly.

This looks like a good ISF Poll! Who has the most punchable/slappable face?

Trump, McConnell, Kushner, Cruz, Meadows, Nunes, Donnie Jr, Eric, Graham? The list is endless.

With the turtle I imagine stuffing his reptilian head down into his suit. I find the imagery entertaining.

A dimension to this "let the states deal with it" attitude that seems not to be discussed enough is that the states don't run the vast majority of hospitals. Thanks to our brilliant, exceptional health care system, hospitals aren't typically run by anyone who might be held accountable in an election or who might recognize the need to spend money to prepare for a crisis like this. They're run by insurance companies to make a profit for themselves and other insurance companies. Because of that, they're never going to generate a stockpile of supplies for a huge emergency. Just storing and maintaining such a stockpile would cut into profits.

There are people who are going to reach the end of this crisis still claiming that we have the best health care system in the world and that a single-payer system would be a nightmarish, socialist disaster. Every one of those people should be severely beaten and dumped in front of a county hospital emergency room, maybe in Mississippi or Arkansas.

When I was growing up my dad worked for a company that made [primarily] anesthesia systems. His job was to maintain and repair those systems all over Oregon. It didn't occur to me until much later in my life how terrifying it was that he might be called to a hospital 400 miles away to repair equipment on an emergency basis because a hospital either wouldn't buy or couldn't afford more than two of these systems (one plus a backup) and that a patient's care could be compromised if a hospital happened to need to put more than one patient under at a time.

We're not the best. We're not even in contention.

No, that federal stockpile is only for use in DC.
This is a joke, right? It's hard to tell these days.

However, given the serious backlash to Kushner's ignorant and self absorbed* comment, they have walked it back.

**Gawd, he's a bad as his FIL. The whole family no doubt are in the category of Leona 'only little people pay taxes' Helmsley.

What an odd choice of word when discussing the United States (in our current configuration). A crummy time to be an American. Sad! :(

Is Trump still planning on deploying U.S. military to the northern border? I don't see anything in the news more recent then last week when this 'plan' first came to light. With Trump, you never know. Since he doesn't seem to know what's he going to do from moment-to-moment, how can anyone else?

From NPR April 1:

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the United States appears to have backed off on its plan to send soldiers to the Canada-U.S. border.

https://globalnews.ca/news/6762458/us-canada-border-troops/

Dumb to start with, but Trump is going ahead with 540 tropps to the Mexican border.

Speaking of dumb, Kirchner is a genius like his father-in-law. He doesn't look at the coronavirus models because the numbers keep changing.

Hey, I just had a great idea for something Canada should publicly and ostentatiously re-think!

Come on, my slapping arm can only go so long before it needs a rest!

I’m crap at faces but wouldn’t he look just like his wife if he had long blonde hair?

They certainly both stand like they went to the same finishing school. The one where you walk around with a coffee cup on your head. :p
