The Trump Presidency: Part 20

Trump's primary skill is to distract and mislead - exactly the wrong thing to do right now.

Trump will go down in history as the worst President of all times. At this point, this is a certainty.
Question is only when enough Americans will figure this out for themselves - because we can't do it for them.

Trump just says stuff he thinks people want to hear and if he gets a positive reaction he goes with it. It's his conman schtick. I do not understand how people continue to be fooled by it other than a significant percent of Americans are simply idiots.

And that's just the idiots on the right. There are also idiots on the left, though it seems a smaller percent. But overall there seems to be more idiots than not and this is why America continues to decline

It isn't just in the USA. I am in Scotland and I have watched the deterioration of the political class in the UK in terms of intellect, integrity and honesty gather pace over the last 40 years. For me, we live in an information age which perhaps might be better described as a dis-information age. With so much space to fill in Satellite TV and on the internet anyone with enough self-confidence can fill time with baseless rumours and conspiracy theories and there will always be some people willing to believe it and those people seem to be a larger percentage of the population every generation.

He doesn't have to. He just changes the lie based on what people call him out on.

Oh, I wasn’t complaint about content. I’ve given up on that.

I was complaining about format.

How doltish does on have to be to allege that a professional writer said, “tens of thousands and much more than that, lives”? (How would that even be punctuated?)

One major side effect of this economic free-fall is that oil and gas prices are at their lowest point in 18 years. Some areas are reporting prices of 99 cents per gallon. We asked Gas Buddy Analyst Patrick De Haan: How low will these prices go? #Gas #Oil #Energy #VarneyCo

The Trump Administration is considering providing direct financial relief to individuals affected by the #coronavirus. Former Reagan Economist Art Laffer says a payroll tax cut would be a more helpful, longer-lasting #stimulus. What do you think? #COVID19 #Markets #VarneyCo

What a ridiculous thought not to vote for President Trump because of a virus. His policies are still the best for the people & country.
Dem policies destroy the good.

He plays to their racism and bigotry. They hear what they want to hear.

It's like how can those Evangelicals really believe Trump is a godsend? They want their religious beliefs to be true.

Interesting comment on one of the morning news shows: Trump wants a miracle cure. That's why he believed in the 'virus will end in summer' nonsense. And because of it he didn't act. He wanted to wish it away.

Now he's on to the unproven chloroquine. He wants the miracle to be true, so he believes it.

So much puke worthy crap there. Re the highlighted, how is a payroll tax cut supposed to help all the people out of work?

Did the dumb **** really just offer help to North Korea? How about the stupid mother ****** come through on the test kits, or the PPE for the medical workers he promised his own country? We don't appear to be in any position to be providing aid to anyone at the moment.
You don't understand...

Everything trump touches gets messed up... He's like a weapon in that way.

By "helping" North Korea he can help hasten their collapse. Trump is playing 4-dimensiinal chess!

From what I've read -- recall former Speaker Paul Ryan saying, 'They poll everything!' -- Trump's team has it down to a science. They have a digital staff on the White House budget. They poll but not by using conventional polling. They track what trends on social media. An example is, Trump calls a Democrat a name and launches an insult. The digital staff watch how it trends on social media. How many times it gets tweeted and retweeted. How many likes. If it doesn't do well Trump drops it. If it's popular Trump keeps going back to it. That's undoubtedly the reason Trump keeps bashing Hillary Clinton and Obama. That probably tracks well on social media. Paul Ryan was quoted as saying Trump said he learned about 'micro-polling' from The Apprentice reality TV show. They carefully watched trending and tweaked the show from week to week.

This is obviously working with his core base. There's two things I notice with Trump. First, I don't think any president has ever had approval ratings that never rose to 50% or higher. Until now that was pretty much unheard of. Second, Trump's approval rating has never reached the lows other president's experienced. Some had occasional approval ratings below 30% -- both Bush's, Jimmy Carter, Richard Nixon -- but Trump has never gone below 35%. I think his handling (or his digital staff's handling) of social media is a major reason.

Below is a chart showing all presidents' 'highest ever' approval ratings. [Click to enlarge] The two lowest were Nixon and Reagan's but at 67% and 68%. Trump's highest was 49% in early February of this year when he was acquitted of impeachment charges by the Senate.

That would be like washing your car because you want it to rain. That's not how that law works - instead, he'd end up sparking a nuclear war.

Would perhaps some other consequences also occur?

Amazing what some people can comfort themselves with.

I said nothing about comforting or good. It's just that the premise was that Trump's black trumb would make it collapse and the response was basically - "That's not how it works, it would cause a disaster, instead." I was merely pointing out that the disaster would, indeed, likely cause it to collapse. For that matter, given Trump's black thumb, the US getting hurt in the process is actually rather expectable - unless you think that all those investors into Trump's failures didn't get totally screwed over?
