The Trump Presidency: Part 20

The Trump administration bungled the response, but apologists will claim he did the China ban, which other presidents would not have done because it's "racist." Except such bans were only considered racist after Trump mentioned banning people from certain Muslim countries.

It's sort of similar to another turd-brained right-wing talking point: "People on MSNBC and CNN called it the 'Wuhan virus' back in January. Elite media are hypocrites suffering from TDS."

In the early days, news organizations were using that language because they were ignorant. It was pointed out how such a designation could result in racist stigmatizion. WHO formally gave the disease a name, and now the media follow that scientific consensus. People who continue to use "Chinese virus" or "Wuhan virus" or "Kung Flu" are weaponizing words for racist purposes; they're acting in bad-faith.

Trump knew it was a pandemic before it was a pandemic, so his supporters will give him credit. As someone remarked on this election season, "Hindsight IS 2020."

I sincerely hope that the lives and wellbeing of you are your loved ones are not put at risk due to the misinformation, falsehoods, and general attempts to downplay this threat that have come out of the Trump administration.

Traitor! No True Patriot Ever Doubts Dear Leader!

Every time Trump and his flunkies brag on stopping Chinese travel early on, I want to add “BUT IT DIDN'T WORK!!!” Stipulated it may have delayed our outbreak, in the long run I don’t think it had much of an effect on “flattening the curve”, just delaying it. Which could have been valuable had the time gained had been spent intelligently. But was it?
Any belief that it helped is incorrect. The virus was already here and spreading, and limiting the ban to travel from China ignores the fairly obvious truth that infected travelers could fly from any other country. A smart president would have suspended all incoming international passenger traffic and would have done so weeks earlier. S/he would have done so because any competent medical advice would have included an explanation of incubation periods and that viruses don't care about an individual's nationality.

Trump had the information, refused to acknowledge the danger, and even made his own Florida home a hotspot for spreading the virus - internationally!! - scarcely a week before finally declaring an emergency.

He is complicit in nearly every American death from the virus.

One aspect of these press conferences is watching VP Pence model responsible conservatism. He's as right-wing as anybody in U.S. politics, but he's not stupid and he's not crazy. Trump should just introduce him and keep quiet.

Q: What do you say to Americans who are scared

Trump: "I say that you're a terrible reporter, that's what I say."

That reporter did him a favor - set him up with a perfect soft toss down the middle - and Trump, instead of being a leader, or even simulating one for a moment like Pence did with the same question, flew into a rage.

He’s not a leader; he’s a pitiful excuse for an American in particular and a man in general. Never mind the softball metaphor - he was a spoiled 6-year-old who threw a temper tantrum instead of swinging and hurled the bat at the grown-up who placed the ball on the tee for him.

One thing? Your sources of information have left you deluded, you should take a break for a while.

Europeans also. No need to explain why you did not mention them.

Because he didn't block them until much later and he's not ******* bragging about blocking the UK on a regular basis. He brings up blocking China more than he's ever brought up any accomplishment of any of his children in his entire lifetime. Which isn't hard as long as it's >1.

On a serious note, you can stop giving me advice. It won't be heeded or even considered.

Reefs. That reef just snuck up on us. Who knows where reefs come from. I heard, maybe it's true, I don't know, that it's probably due to Obama-era environmental regulations that caused the reef. But when I was steering the ship, and no one has ever seen a ship like this before, beautiful ship, very important industry, shipping, beautiful ship, and it was going so fast. so fast.
And the reef, well, no one's ever seen a reef like this. So we'll see what happens. I don't think we'll hit the reef, but maybe, so we'll see. We're looking at the reef very powerfully.

We will be making a huge important announcement in two weeks.
"Sir, how do you know so much about reefs?"

Or, and this might be crazy, put actual experts in charge of the crisis response and then almost never appear during their press conferences.

ETA: Seriously, if he appeared even slightly contrite or humble, deferring to people with actual knowledge and experience, a lot more people would be happy with how he was handling this crisis. He'd still be voted out in November because he's a dangerous, criminal nutjob, but he might score some PR points for whatever he's going to try to sell come next February.

It would be sooooo easy for Trump to look like a bit presidential, if he just stopped ******** on everyone not actively praising him.
Mrs. Kcin had today's press conference on the teevee and, as I was walking past, I gave it a listen for about 10 minutes.

You know how somebody can be somewhat fluent in another language, enough so that it's not initially evident, but under closer scrutiny you can tell?

Trump sorta sounds like he's speaking English, but his native tongue is ********tese.

It was a completely reasonable question, if one with an ulterior motive.

I thought it was a “softball” question*, setting the President up to offer words of comfort.

Unless the ulterior motive was to show Trump incapable of such compassion, which it sure did.

*I see sts60 used much the same metaphor upthread.

The only way Trump will ever utter words of compassion and comfort is if they are scripted ahead of time. He is incapable of actually having those emotions. He cannot comprehend them and cannot express them in real time.

Add a "people are saying" and a few "Sirs" and you've got the perfect Trump quote there.

Trump's attack on the reporter today was a perfect example of what a defensive POS Trump is. For those who missed it:

https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/20/media/trump-rant-at-nbc-news-peter-alexander/index.html

Yep, Trump is garbage. That reporter's question was not only perfectly legitimate, it was kind of a set up to allow Trump to give a message of hope to the American people. Why did Trump attack the reporter for such a question? Why did the scorpion sting the turtle? The answer is the same for both.

Oops! Delayed recognition of sarcasm.

Well, I'm glad someone got it!

I've been switching between Canadian and US coverage of this pandemic, and the difference in tone between the Trump press conferences and the Canadian ones is staggering. If I had the time and the software, I'd do one of those side-by-side comparison videos. On the one hand, I'm really glad we have reasonable people in charge here, and on the other, I'm freaking out a little bit about how badly the US is messing this up. Even with a perfect response on our side, we're so close to and so heavily interconnected with the US, that if they descend into chaos, we'll be taken along with them.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/

16.5K cases in the USA, the trend is rising exponentially.

Okay, I'm looking at those graphs, and the one that has me scratching my head is the one of "New cases vs. New Recoveries". New cases is going up exponentially, as expected, but new recoveries is flat. Like, seriously flat. Are they just not counting most recoveries for some reason? Or does recovery take so long that we're not seeing it yet? The new cases line diverges from the new recovery line about 10 days before the latest date on the chart. Does it really take more than ten days for virtually everyone to recover from this?

If so, that freaks me out a bit.

ETA: Seems like this is the case.

Day 17: On average, people who recover from the virus are discharged from the hospital after 2 1/2 weeks.

I think recoveries take quite a bit of time, and maybe they're only counting from hospitalizations.
