Biden for President?

Gotta admit- there's something almost endearingly funny about someone decrying other folks "repeating stupid talking points" in political discussions who continually blats "bug people" as if that's some sort of meaningful point instead of just a dismissive and simplistic meme.

Did I say "endearingly"? Ok, that may be the wrong word here- it's actually more like "disgusting" when it's from someone with an obvious bug up their ass about something who persists in pulling it out and insisting everyone else should look very closely at it.

When you hear these "talking points" over and over and over and over again then go on to explain why they're BS, your patience wears thin.

A fair number of posters, many of who are not American, read their preferred media sources about US politics then repeat them here as if they have something interesting and astute to say. They don't.

I'm the one who gives these people new and interesting perspectives. I explained to them the obvious, apparent, and expected racial divide within the Democratic Party--where blacks vote in a racial bloc for establishment Democrats, and whites are a mixed bag but mostly prefer "progressives." This is not something these people would have read from their preferred media sources and it's not something they would have figured out on their own.

It isn't really possible to discuss contemporary US politics in any meaningful way without racial politics. This is not something those living in homogenous, lily white countries seem to be able to grasp. Hence, you get a forum full of silly, lame-brain, mostly meaningless takes.

Uh huh. Well, whatever makes you feel better about flaunting that bug, I guess.

I'll agree with you on one thing: I'm certainly seeing at least one silly, lame-brain and mostly meaningless take.

I am not saying Warren would not make a competent VP. However, I don't think the VP needs to be the one "handling" the crisis... I think Biden would do a good enough job making the 'big' decisions, and you would have plenty of minions (such as the CDC) making recommendations and handling the day-to-day stuff. So selecting Warren to be VP just because she could handle the Covid19 crisis would be a mistake.

Better to select someone younger, since they would (hopefully) become the next Democrat to become president after Biden is done.
I think Biden plans to be "done" the day after winning the general election.
Whomever he picks for VP will, I suspect, for all intents and purposes be the President.

Possibly... but the democrats still have to plan long-term.

What happens in 2024 or 2028? Will they have a former VP to step in and campaign for the presidency? Or will the current VP be too old by then and they have to go back to another potentially damaging primary?

I disagree completely. But he does know that he will be too old to run again so his pick as VP has to be someone who could run in 2024 and not be too old by then. I'm still going with Stacey Abrams who is now 46.

I see Biden as someone who will include the VP in everything in order to prepare her to run in '24.

I'm sure Stacy Abrams is a nice person, but she has only held state legislative office and lost her race for governor. Never a mayor or governor, never a congressperson or senator, not really an established national figure. Much more likely to go with Klobuchar or Harris, maybe Kirsten Gillibrand or a governor.

Tammy Duckworth, a senator and former congressperson who lost both legs in combat in Iraq, would be a compelling choice.

Of course there's always Michelle Obama.

Plenty of things. But in an environment like this forum, where white people living in all white countries have no clue how mixed race countries work, you have to bring it up.

You understand that UK and continental European members all live in mixed countries, right?

There's a rumor going around that Biden is going in intending to do only a single term, and, in fact, will be resigning with a year left in order to provide a leg up for the VP.

Of course there's always Michelle Obama.

Not sure how to reconcile this.

If Michelle Obama is the VP selection then I'll know I'm in a simulated reality designed to break my brain.

That would be a dirty tactic to keep the Republicans out of power. I approve. :D

It's way past time Democrats use dirty tactics. We've been playing wearing gloves in the ring while Republicans are bashing us with chairs and knives for way too long.

Sounds more like wishful thinking. If you think a President is going to voluntarily step down unless they had no other option, I got a bridge to sell you.

An interesting essay about the disillusionment of Bernie supporters, framed by someone who volunteered heavily for Bernie and will support Biden in the general:

https://medium.com/@srwm1138/im-a-bernie-volunteer-here-s-how-joe-biden-can-win-bernie-voters-6da47bbf4d52

A much more coherent version of what I've been clumsily poking around the last few days.

Biden will not inherit Bernie's grassroots support, even if Bernie enthusiastically backs Biden in the general. It is non transferable. The author urges Biden supporters to be prepared for poor turnout among Bernie supporters and to build a winning coalition with that in mind.

Well yes, because they are childish, petty psychopaths driven by spite and a desire to punish the system, not improve it. That has been made clear.

Like for instance, going into a Biden thread and going "Neiner neiner neiner you ain't getting our vote."

How's the veal?

you should read the essay.

The essay isn't just talking about the portion of Bernie supporters who won't vote for Biden. It's talking much more broadly than that.

Biden won't inherit Bernie volunteer army. It's a morale thing. Getting people to donate their time and efforts is a hard sell and Bernie's grassroots support was a tremendous accomplishment. Once he drops out, these people won't be as motivated. They may very well vote for Biden, but they aren't going canvassing, getting on busses, texting, calling, whatever.

Biden looks like he's gonna win this primary. Look to his base to win the general, not Bernie's. Hope they are ready to do the hard work necessary.

Trump is going to fire up the MAGA rally machine soon. Biden better have an answer by then.
