Very Minor point, but still:
For the first time in it's over 50 year history, the Society For Creative Anarchronism Kingdom Of the West cancelled one of it's four annual major events, March Crown.
This going to change our all lives in little ways like this, but they add up.

You know, things like closing Disneyland seem inevitable, but not that big a deal for the average person. Then you get a cancellation of perhaps your weekly book club meeting and it suddenly hits you like, "Whoa, this is real!"

My state just closed all K-12 schools for the month. The state universities are extending Spring Break a week, then switching to 100% online. My classes are already online, so luckily it doesn't affect me that much. The Archdiocese also stopped Mass and closed Catholic schools.

I wonder if the markets have priced in the impact this will have. Who is going to be watching these kids?
Sounds almost identical to Michigan, although not all schools have committed to online. I suspect, though, that all of them will.

I was pretty amazed when they announced Mass was shut down, though.

As for markets.....no one knows, because no one knows the full extent of the impact, but there is already a thread about it. (The "Black Swan" thread.)

The effects are having ramifications even beyond the human sphere.

I read an article today about a temple site in Thailand where hundreds of starving monkeys are overrunning the streets fighting over a few food scraps. (There were pictures. It wasn't pretty.) The monkeys have always been well-fed by the constant flow of tourists. And now there are no tourists.

I hope at the end of this it shows what things are really important. Would we really need to reopen the archaic DMV or stick people together in nonsense university classes? Do we really need churches? Maybe itll be a new perspective

All it takes is twelve...

A friend of mine has been posting for weeks about the cruise she was taking with her family. They flew to Miami yesterday and I think were scheduled to embark tomorrow. She just posted that they canceled the cruise. The parents are taking it in stride but the teenagers are devastated. Myself, I'm angry for them.

I would think that after all the informed prep on the part of the cruise line, that would be the safest place to be for the next two weeks.

Actually no. It only takes one person to come aboard with the virus and it would spread to everyone on board.

Boston College says 'see all you kids next year'. Gave us like 4 days to clear out of Dorms.

Rutgers out for Spring Break, but they not-so-subtly said to take all your belongings with you.

My wife's public school workplace is verifying that educators have internet at home with reasonable speeds.

Governor of NJ was expected to announce closing of all public schools and non-essential gov't offices, but balked last minute.

We have had one death in NJ from COVID 19, a 69 yr old man.

What an unpredictable side effect of this mess.

I hope someone feeds them. It's not their fault humans made the monkeys dependent.

Almost anyone coming in from anywhere will have to self isolate for 14 days. Cruise ships told to stop coming. etc.

They are being up-front about it being impossible to stop it spreading, but they want to "flatten the curve"; trying to avoid an overwhelming peak of ill people. (Note the pic, in the pic, in the news item.)

I think someone should tell the Thumbsucker-in-Chief that Obama said he wasn’t man enough to order a Directive 7-12 on Mar-a-Lago, just so he would do it (without, naturally, asking what it was).

And in odd news, reminiscent of New Zealand's announcements...

...our latest case here is a person who has just returned from America.

Hopefully this doesn't become the USA's latest export success.

:)

Fixed your link.

The link above says that anyone coming to NZ must isolate themselves for 14 days. So it might be a successful export from the USA (and Europe), but not to NZ.

Just read about the reasoning behind the UK government's total lack of action on the Virus.
And it is one of the craziest things I have ever seen.
Boris is trying to out Trump Trump on this.

The flip side of that coin is that - as I think you mentioned way back - that might just create viral resistance to the drug and we end up with a worse problem.

That was me. To take flu, oseltamivir (tamiflu) resistance can develop fairly easily because its target can mutate to a resistant form. Oseltamivir resistant strains circulate, and widespread use of oseltamivir particularly as a preventative agent in vulnerable groups can select for resistant strains. Zanamivir acts at a site that does not appear to be able to mutate to resistance easily.

It would be possible depending on the particular drug that resistance in SARS CoV 2 could develop. Also important maybe how they are used. As preventatives in the vulnerable, or limited to those with serious illness.

Haha! I've said that a few times.

I'd be surprised if it changes a damned thing, though.

Two world wars and hundreds of millions dead didn't reduce our love of wars. A hundred million dead under Mao didn't make the Chinese change track...

N.Z.'s gotten a bit serious.

We have.

Far too late. Enacted a month ago, it could have kept us completely clear.

I know our sixth case - it's a bloke called Jim Curtin, a well-known trotting bloke who caught it in New York off a guy who was one of USA's deaths.

I'm pleased to say I haven't seen him for years!

I wonder about this "self isolation" business.

I guess we can only wait & see.

Where's your evidence flu and coronavirus mutation rates are similar?

Coronavirus there are a couple of human pathogen strains, MERs, SARS, and COVID 19. Compare that to how many strains and how common the flu virus mutates.

Just because they are respiratory infections doesn't mean they are the same in every way.

Had to add covid 19 deniers to flat earthers/antivaxxers/global warming deniers/anti GMO nuts/truthers/creationists and at this point just cut and paste

"(Hint: if you are talking about the kill rate, that is the "if we came from monkeys why are there still monkeys?" equivalent)"
