2019-nCoV / Corona virus Pt 2

Directive from company management today was to bring our laptops home in case they decide to close the offices on Monday. At least we can keep working and maintain our income.

....

Eh? Maybe you missed all the posts I've made about the Remdesivir, chloroquine and other treatments in the mass of posts, but I'd say I'm well ahead of most people in knowing where antivirals relating to Covid-19 are at.
So why are you downplaying the implication of impending treatment? Get sick now, too bad you'll miss the treatment that is in the works.

Also what did you mean about knowing something Mon or Tues?

This is just absurd. (i.e. of Trump)

He has been exposed. He knows he has been exposed. The test is available to him.

Oh well, it's Trump. What that fool does is unfathomable. That's the problem with his huge ego. The virus doesn't care. However, I suppose the probability that he was actually infected is probably quite small. It doesn't seem as contagious as all that.

I think a huge part of it is that he doesn't grasp why testing is so important. I saw it in the way he said (falsely) that everyone who wants a test can get a test. I think he thinks it protects the person being tested. He's showing his courage by not demanding a test.

Of course, he's an idiot. The purpose of the test is to protect people around you. Getting tested would show that he has some sort of consideration for his fellow man. Therefore, he doesn't see any need to get tested, because such a thought wouldn't occur to him.

I wonder if the markets have priced in the impact this will have. Who is going to be watching these kids?

Around my daughter's school, it would be the Asian grandparents who care for the kids. Perhaps good that our schools are still open!

If you look at new real estate here, you'd notice many townhomes are built with 3 stories. The bottom one will have its own entrance and kitchen. This is specifically to appeal to the need for multi-generational living, which most American places do not do, but is done here.

Grandma & Grandpa, so the kids can pass it on to them.

.. president does not plan to get tested

I'd say he's too scared to. He is pooping his pants at the disease and thinks he's better not knowing, because if he finds out he is, he'll have a panic attack of the major kind.

So why are you downplaying the implication of impending treatment? Get sick now, too bad you'll miss the treatment that is in the works.

I'm not downplaying it at all - I've even recommended people buy Gilead, because I think they've seen information that looks pretty favourable or they wouldn't be ramping up production.

But, if it works, then the virus mutates to resist it, we're back to square one.

Also what did you mean about knowing something Mon or Tues?

I'm pretty sure there are supposed to be some interim results of the earliest treatments by then.

I'll see if I can dig up the reference.

UK, USA, Australia, most EU countries could have been doing all that now. Instead we sit on our hands waiting for... does anyone know what we are waiting for before we take any actual action?

Like spraying disinfectant in public transportation? Having people in clean suits parade around in public as if they are accomplishing something? Wasting time and effort on diagnosing everyone who coughs or has a sore throat? Making the movement of people that have been infected publicly available in handy phone apps, which the state apparently has compiled from their bank account records and other sources?

The current situation in Canada:

Public Health Canada's Coronavirus web site said:
Areas in Canada with cases of COVID-19 as of March 13, 2020, 9:00 am

Province, territory or other | Number of confirmed cases | Number of probable cases
British Columbia|53|0
Alberta|23|0
Saskatchewan|0|1
Manitoba|1|2
Ontario|60|0
Quebec|13|0
New Brunswick|1|0
Repatriated Canadians|1|0
Total cases | 152 | 3

More areas are announcing school closures and events—especially sporting events—are being cancelled. With one confirmed case in Manitoba and two probable cases, grocery stores are beginning to sell out of some items.

My roommate and I got in ahead of this by purchasing extra stuff last week, so we're pretty well set if we have to self-isolate.

I don't know how many tests have been done in Canada. Here in Manitoba the provincial site says 403 as of two days ago, in a province with just 1.3 million people in it, 705,000 of which are here in Winnipeg.

Overall I'd say that while Canada hasn't moved as fast on this as I would like, I think our government's response has been much better than what we've been seeing in the States, where the leadership was initially more concerned about the stock market than the potential for an epidemic. At least we kept our infectious diseases battle plan and infrastructure, based on lessons learned from the SARS outbreak in Toronto 17 years ago, in place. That plan was activated back in mid-January.

Oh ****... we have 4 cases in 1 day. Guatemalan President has just said that no Canadians or Americans can enter after Monday. Talk of cancelling Semana Santa, the biggest holiday and tourist attraction on Central América. Plus, I am coming down with the flu. Where I live there is limited medical care. I hope it's just the flu!!! But I am young enough.... I hope!!! ☹

I've brought mine home for the same reason (wasn't ordered to though)
I hope you both thought to wipe them down carefully so you didn’t spread infection from your workplace to your home

I'm beginning to think we should actually take a pragmatic approach and let it go and what happens happens.

So, hospitals get crushed? Those who die will be dead, the epidemic will end and there will be the following benefits:

Huge savings in care costs for people with chronic diseases.
Massive increase in vacancies in age care facilities, leading to price cuts.
Enormous numbers of properties hitting the market, enabling a widespread reduction in prices and rents.
Far fewer disgusting old scroats who have drifted further and further to the right as they age.
Huge reduction in hospital admissions for age-related disease, freeing up space for elective surgery. (in countries with UHC)
Huge reduction in CO2 emissions consequent with a lot of high-wealth people not travelling through being dead.

Instead, we're creating an economic disaster that might slow it down, but won't make it go away. It will keep cropping up.

As I watch plane after plane flying in and out of our main airport, I can't see any way the disease can be erased, like SARS or Ebola, so we may as well take the pain and move on.

There is an experiment going on now. USA is taking that approach, China has taken the opposite approach. We will see who is right.

If Trump is infected then he may not live. Come to think of it many of the USA politicians may not be alive at the election time. They are mostly elderly.

Well I'm sure you can be the one to tell your wife she is not a very important person! :)

Seriously was she a direct contact with a confirmed case?
Not my wife, one of her work colleagues.
But, no, she doesn’t seem to have been in contact with a confirmed case, merely showed symptoms.
There is a large Chinese student population in the city and she was a young girl that likes clubbing.
Most clubs are in the Chinatown district too, rather ironically

The Australian government has only this week suggest cancelations of events/gatherings of more than 500 people. .

From Monday.

So the Prime Minister can go to rugby league today

Jeez mate, that's not good. Hope it turns out ok - keep us posted!

NZ's response is way worse than USA's.

We have this neat idea that people who are sick should stay at home, but for most of the country, that doesn't work, because you don't get special Covid-19 sick leave unless you're tested and confirmed as a case.

But we're not testing anyone who hasn't been to a known hot-spot for the disease. https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/he...-mums-request-to-be-tested-for-virus-rejected

Haha!

I got down to William Barr to find one who might survive it.

Trump, Pence & Pelosi could easily all croak, and the 4th guy in like is about 112. Then it would be Barr.

A friend of mine has been posting for weeks about the cruise she was taking with her family. They flew to Miami yesterday and I think were scheduled to embark tomorrow. She just posted that they canceled the cruise. The parents are taking it in stride but the teenagers are devastated. Myself, I'm angry for them.

I would think that after all the informed prep on the part of the cruise line, that would be the safest place to be for the next two weeks.

There is no more reason to be concerned about my laptop than any of the numerous other things we have brought into our home over the past month.

This says masks are most effective in Hong Kong. And against the flu. So now I am confused.

I can almost see people in Hong Kong who bought masks to protect themselves from Tear Gas duirng the recent riots findins a whole new use for them...

I think the odds that he is getting tested ... regularly, perhaps even daily ... and just not admitting to it because it would reflect badly on the facade he is trying to maintain are much higher than the odds he hasn't been tested at all.

Very Minor point, but still:
For the first time in it's over 50 year history, the Society For Creative Anarchronism Kingdom Of the West cancelled one of it's four annual major events, March Crown.
This going to change our all lives in little ways like this, but they add up.
