So last year 37,000 Americans died from the common Flu. It averages between 27,000 and 70,000 per year. Nothing is shut down, life & the economy go on. At this moment there are 546 confirmed cases of CoronaVirus, with 22 deaths. Think about that!

The UK will remain in the "containment" stage of its response to the coronavirus following an emergency Cobra meeting.

It comes as the country's chief medical adviser confirmed a fourth person had died from the virus in the UK.

There were 319 confirmed cases in the UK as of 09:00 GMT on Monday, a rise of 46 since the same time on Sunday.

No one but an idiot would think that the virus is only going to kill Trump supporters, even if they are old and/or infirm.

I would have thought it was pretty obvious I was being facetious, but that's the internet for you.

My wife and I were both sick for nearly the entire month of January, with my symptoms mirroring hers but delayed by about a week.

Assuming you don't get it [again?] you'd need to have a serological test, which won't be done until it's all over.

It's something I mentioned way, way back - what if this is a mirror of the great H1N1/Mexican 'Flu pandemic, when everybody caught it but hardly anyone noticed.

Only time will tell.

As noted, it's not likely you had it, but you can't rule it out entirely either.

Well... so far we're still not anywhere near a million confirmed cases and your deadline's tomorrow.

If you kept up with the thread, I've already taken that one on the chin a couple of days ago.

No surprise whatsoever - it's something else I said way back in the thread when people were attacking China's response and I asked how Americans would react to quarantines.

It's so highly unlikely you had a case here before it really started spreading, and flu numbers were significant then.

Travel history plays a large part in diagnosing coronavirus at the present time. I went to the ER a week ago with symptoms that would have put me in an isolation ward in Wuhan.

Once coronavirus becomes prevalent here it will take up more resources simply because we can no longer presume patients who haven’t traveled are low risk.

I was just following up on our own conversation. I've been sick the last few days so I didn't want to read all the posts made since then. Besides, now that it's the 9th it's much easier to see that the target won't be reached.

This is the second time your doomsday predictions have failed. I hope you'll be more careful about future attempts.

My allergies kicked in the very first sunny day since Winter started. For the past two weeks I've been wandering around coughing and sniffling pretty much non stop. "It's not corona," I say. "No fever," I say. "Just allergies."

I was glad to see when I was getting ready for work this morning that CNN has taken it upon themselves to start calling it a pandemic.
In the long run they are probably right but why not wait until it is official.

I mostly agree with him but I wish he would not tweet it.
I assume we will easily reach 100 deaths and 1,000 is not unlikely unless it is not as contagious as reported so far.

In the 2018-2019 flu season, the CDC estimated that 42.9 million people got sick and 61,200 died. 0.14% fatality. 22 out of 546 is 4%. Do we have to wait for the comparable 1.7 million deaths before doing something?
He said think about it.

Did hospitals collapse due flu ? They did in China. Did 2 members of parliaments and other 5 politicians died in single week on flu, how they did last week in Iran ? I doubt it.
This is clearly way more severe, especially as far as load on health system goes. Lot of patients require intensive care. Those flu numbers also contain indirect deaths. We don't have study of such effects on Corona virus yet.
The death toll can be smaller in the end, but only because of the precautions, and effort. The potential is way higher.

Because they're more reliable that the institution led by Pence?

I know the feeling, but you must also know from past experiences that people don't even believe you when you say, "It's not the flu, it's not the cold. No fever. Just allergies."

Saying nothing is shut down, life and the economy go on is not the same as doing nothing.

If you thought about it I assume you would see the fatality will be much less than 4% although probably higher than the flu. Probably less than 1% which is still much higher than the flu.

I'm in the exact same position. Allergies kicked into high gear about a week ago and my cat still insists on sleeping on my face. Despite there being zero reported cases in my entire state at this point I still keep my distance from people and pre-warned work that if they heard anything from my office it was hay fever and not the Andromeda Strain being sent out. Been monitoring my temperature just in case, but nope - juniper and pet dander is all.

'course none of that will matter once we get our first reported case and my co-workers decide to Alvin Sackheim me.
