Restaurant manager fired for accommodating a bigoted customer's demand

My standards are pretty low for evidence, but not nearly as low as others have. 'Somebody says on facebook' is never enough. Interviews, some impartial witnesses, maybe a police report or video, and that is quite satisfactory. Otherwise, it's just projection and confirmation bias. That's good enough for you?

I've seen you deny police reports but that's for another thread and another time.

As for this one, I still think the manager was the scapegoat and they should ban the customer.

I've argued that police were following an anal-retentive letter of the law on other threads. Calling BS on denying them.

Agreed. The hostess and server should have their coffers enheavied, too. No one deserves to be thrown under the bus for doing their jobs, especially having to take this kind of **** from bigot patrons.

Nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

It's counterintuitive, but nukes are less fun than mere arson. The real thrill isn't the total destruction, it's the immediacy of the experience, being close to the action, and participating hands-on. That's why choking a rent boy is so much more fun than mass poisoning a whole Southern Baptist revival. Not that I'm admitting to either activity. Post is for humor entertainment only and is not admissible evidence.

There were other people with her. She wasn't isolated or anything. According to all articles the woman was with family and they just let her go off. That signals to me that this either isn't abnormal for her, or they agree with it. There aren't many other explanations. If it was part of an underlying condition you'd think the family would say, "I'm so sorry, let me change get her out of here."

Ranting about Muslims wasn't abnormal for my Uncle once he started, but it was absolutely a mental illness issue. The article is light on details of what accompanying family did or said.

It's possible they agreed with her. It's also possible that these kinds of outbursts were new for her and they were taken aback and didn't have the kind of relationship where they could easily usher her off.

It's also possible that the family tried to calm or redirect her, or apologize to the server. We don't have a record of their part in this.

It's also possible that they were just bad at dealing with her mental issues or didn't have the skills or resources to do so well.

Back to my Uncle. When he started ranting about Islam, his wife and children never ushered him out of the party while I was there. Maybe they did if he tried it to an actual Muslim person. He was a 65 year old 6 foot 2 inch man, used to being the head of his family. "We have to go, you can't say that" was not going to go over well. Sequestering him from all public spaces was not going to go over well.

You can't assume that mental illness can be (or is even if it can be) easily managed by family.

Then your family was the problem, unequivocally. I don't care how big, intimidating or used to being anything the person was. Once they started losing their ability to monitor what they say then it's on the family to control that. Just because your family let it go doesn't mean others should or that it's acceptable to do so.

I have the upmost respect for my father, who is also bigger than I am, but I would be to blame if I knew he was mentally ill\prone to outbursts (new or not), and I decided it was fine to subject others to his berating behavior. **** him.

I may get in trouble for doxxing you with this photo.

Considered that but I still have a fair bit hope people don't just chose gun in arguments in the US.

Might be naive

Comments like this are very interesting. "International" skeptics admit there is something to fear but when people take even the slightest precaution they're labeled "racist" and we get the 10 billionth "while black" thread.

It's rather telling that your immediate assumption was that the black people would do the shooting, and not the white people.

It's not telling anything new, just telling.

Statistics tell that. Reality is not concerned with your shaming tactics and neither am I.

A lot of that springs from corporate though, they may just have been so used to being overruled by a policy from head office, dictated by a person who 'learnt' about customer service but has never held a customer facing job in their short career...

Corporate normally sets the tone so their's a reasonable chance the guy was hosed either way

I agree. TBH I think he probabaly made the right decision. It would be nice if you could just kick the customer out, but I doubt that’s realistic. The next best thing is to switch assignments so the waiter isn’t subjected to the idiot customer and the idiot customer doesn’t create a disturbance for others.

Let's say your father were to start saying sort of rude things to people in public. Would you immediately have him involuntarily committed? What level of innappropriate comments at what frequency would it take to call for the straightjacket? He is a grown man, I'm wondering what your stomach would be for either "The rest of the family is going out without you pops, you can't be in public". Or deciding that no one in your family could ever go to a public place? Do you really have 100% confidence that you would easily wrangle that before he said anything very offensive? I wish I had your confidence to perfectly handle a complex and fraught situation so perfectly.

I guess if I had your advantage of only thinking about it from an armchair I might gain your mastery.

Seems odd that this happened in Evansville; that city is about 12% black, which means that on average, one out of eight food servers is going to be African-American. Unless the woman is completely from the sticks and just visiting, she should be used to it.

(And don't tell her, but odds are that one out of eight cooks are likely to be black as well).

Disgusting. People eating at Olive Garden? I got dragged to one for a work lunch in 2001 and someone found a live worm in the salad. The manager confessed they just buy salad pre-mixed and dump it in bowls. So we burned a cross on the restaurant lawn, and rightly so.

Aren't live worms a delicacy for monkeys? Or is that just non-Tragic ones?

They'll kick you out of The Sons of Italy if you get caught.
