They make paper towels that are as soft as toilet paper.

Butt anyway, wiping your ass is totally optional in a crisis situation. I've been in parts of the world where the bathrooms don't even have toilet paper. Just a ceramic hole in the ground. That was not a crisis situation but really you can live fine without wiping all the time.

Totally optional? Great, then I opt for toilet paper.

Just use water. I went two years without TP or a bidet. A pail of water with a ladle is all you need. Gets a person cleaner than TP anyway.

You went two years without TP? Why only two years? Why aren’t you still using a pair of water and a ladle? Oh, because you prefer toilet paper? Of course!

Nurses union says UC-Davis coronavirus case shows vulnerability of nation’s hospitals
A major nurses union asserted Friday that a recent case of covid-19 at UC-Davis Medical Center shows U.S. hospitals are unprepared for an epidemic and that federal health officials’ guidelines are insufficient.
A coronavirus patient admitted to the Sacramento hospital on Feb. 19 caused at least 124 health-care workers — 36 nurses and 88 other workers — to self-isolate at home, National Nurses United said in a statement. California health officials, however, have said the number of people from the state’s hospitals who are self-isolating is less than 100.
Nurses and other health-care workers have been “sidelined” during the coronavirus outbreak, the union said.
“Lack of preparedness will create an unsustainable national health care staffing crisis,” the union wrote in its statement. “Nurses view the handling of this COVID-19 case as a system failure and not a success.”
The union said it requested increased staffing, equipment and supplies from University of California medical system leaders.

So it's the UC Davis hospital in Sacramento, not the one actually in Davis.
I live around 5 miles from the UC Davis Facility.
That makes me feel really peach keen....

I live

Filled the freezer and pantry with food. Hoping to have enough to not have to leave the apartment for a couple of weeks if needed. I'm hoping that if there is widespread infection in the US, they can be stretched out over time and not completely swamp our medical resources.

Don't you think that is being a bit paranoid?

I live..as my above post shows...pretty damn close to a hospitlized Corona case...and I feel no need to go into survivialist mode. Take precautions sure, but that seems a bit extreme.

I have some emergency supplies (mainly in case of an Earthquake) and those will do for now.

I use TP because the desing of American toilets is not well suited to using water. Othewise I would probably stick with water. I still do when I am camping.

More to the point, lack of access to TP is hardly a catastrophe.

Ancient Romans used a communal sponge on a stick......
FTFY

As a registered nurse , I have no fears so long as I have enough personal protective equipment and soap. I did after swear an oath and I take it seriously. On the other hand, I know some really, really stupid nurses, aides, and doctors.

You don’t want to flush material down the toilet that isn’t meant to be flushed or you could block up the drains....

You can always do what they do in a lot of less well developed countries, you don't flush any paper, it goes in the trash can beside the toilet.

I stocked up today. I think I was the first person to start the stampede though all the organic canned beans were gone except kidney beans. Those are a great cold out of the can food. I bought those.

I have half of what I need for dog food, need to get the rest at a different store tomorrow.

And as usual, someone in the store aisle was coughing and one of the cashiers had sniffles he claimed was an allergy.

Going to Costco tomorrow. May get some Spam. Will definitely get my wife's Glucerna and maybe some bottled water.

Nobody whatsoever said lack of TP is a catastrophe (unless you have been at the chili and death sauce tacos washed down with IPA beers the night before - then the description completely fits!), all I am saying, and all everyone responding, including you, is implicitly if not explicitly agreeing to is that TP is everyone’s first choice given their bathroom set-ups and if you wish to continue doing like you now rather than like the (ancient) Romans do, or washing out poo-stained towels everyday, or learning how to use the three seashells then you might want to heed my advice and make sure you have plenty before there is a run on the stuff.

Take it as a friendly suggestion and not pretend I am saying that the world will end not with a bang but a cry of “NoooooooOoOooooo!” as the cardboard tube is exposed, that you have to strawman to death!

Jeez....

You can do that if you want...

....the point is don’t flush it down the toilet. My brother-in-law works in sewage and it is a massive pet peeve of his that people think that anything that can flush down the toilet doesn’t make problems later.

Good ideas. I don’t have pets, so I forgot to mention them. But yes, people who do need to think about what they might need.

I did say it was rhetorical, but sure, if you want to use a washcloth on your bum for a couple of months with all the cleaning that it entails then be my guest.

My advice though, is make sure you have enough and buy before the panic starts.
I stocked up today. But my point was it's not the end of the world to run out of TP.

Whereas running out of food could be.

It's also not exactly a death sentence - it's the exact opposite of Captain Trips. Instead of killing 99%, this spares 99%.

Here's an older chap whose been there, done that, not that severe: https://www.stuff.co.nz/world/ameri...-have-the-coronavirus-so-far-it-isnt-that-bad

Now that we're starting to get some genuine, verifiable evidence, it seems that the death toll is almost all people with fairly severe health concerns already.

Pragmatically, you could say it will impact health positively in the long term, with a significant proportion of the heaviest users deceased.

A friend of mine's child goes there. This is just barely starting and it is already close to home.

If you do get it, you're much better to get an early dose, before the hospitals break down.

Now, that's a survival requirement! If I run out of cat food, the felines will be shredding and eating my toes by lunchtime.

Mexico has a couple of cases now, both in Sinaloa and DF... Creeping ever closer to my mountain fortress a little South of there. At the very least I'm pretty sure that where I live we are in a pretty good spot to fend off the coming Zombie Apocalypse.
