The acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney says US media is stoking a coronavirus panic because they hope it will take down President Donald Trump.

So it's just another Dem hoax?

IMO it would be awesome if we could keep this thread as a medicine/health topic instead of politics.

Agreed. We have a thread in US politics about Trump and Covid-19. Let’s keep the US politics there for now...let’s keep the toxic stuff away from virus stuff.

Filled the freezer and pantry with food. Hoping to have enough to not have to leave the apartment for a couple of weeks if needed. I'm hoping that if there is widespread infection in the US, they can be stretched out over time and not completely swamp our medical resources.

Sure.

Does it make sense, in terms of successfully dealing with a pandemic (or whatever we’ve got), to appoint a “tsar/czar”?

Where has this worked before: places, times, etc? Where did it not work? Why (not)?

What role does transparency, from public health leaders, play in successfully dealing with pandemics (history, etc)?

And so on.

FWIW, IMO it’s impossible to separate in situations like those we are in today.

Let’s all hope you do not need medical attention during that time, for any pre-existing or new conditions, so you have no need to leave your apartment.

That none of your neighbors does anything to spread whatever infection any of them might get (no shared, leaky sewage pipes, say).

Etc.

I doubt if it will ever be known how many people in Wuhan, say, died of an otherwise preventable condition, essentially because even basic medical care was unavailable.

You'll need months, not weeks.

Wuhan/Hubei are still showing deaths and new infections over two months since the most extreme measures were undertaken.

I'd say this one will be impossible to wait out.

Live updates: 63rd case of coronavirus confirmed in US
I've only seen this as a chyron so far so I'm waiting for the confirmation.
Yeah, we went from 0 or 1 yesterday to 63 today. I expect we will see a lot more in just a few days.

I've got enough freezer food to last for quite some time. That's quite adequate unless... the power goes out for a substantial length of time. I plan to stock up on dried goods (beans and rice) and canned food.

Why would the power go out? I don't know, but I'm open to considering all scenarios.

I don't get this -- it's always listed as a staple for stocking up in emergencies, but in my opinion I'd rather put my stock in stuff that's more conducive to survival.

<snip>

Pretty well all of that is nonsense, aside from being able to use it anyway.

But a lot of people think it's true that toilet paper is indispensable - supermarkets in NZ sold out all over the place yesterday when we have one case of Covid-19 in the country.

Your two sentences contradict each other. You need to stock up on toilet paper if only so that when (not if) there is panic buying you already have enough. You could even make friends by giving some of your stock away.

Yes, there are substitutes for toilet paper, but none are as good as what you are used to. For example paper towels are a lot rougher. Cloth you need to wash frequently and properly. That is, if you have spare ones you can use. I suggest that you look after your bum. If things go wrong it is not good.

Toilet paper is never featured on movies because it is not sexy enough. How often do you see toilet paper discussed ANYWHERE? The closest are fart jokes.

For those buying fresh meat and freezing it, how long will meat keep frozen? I think the answer may shock you. Because it is only a year at best. See this page for more information https://www.foodsafety.gov/food-safety-charts/cold-food-storage-charts

The goal isn't so much to avoid infection, but to try to spread out the impact so that resources aren't totally exhausted. Even delaying the spread by a few weeks will help hospitals deal with the load.

Also, I know how people empty the grocery store shelves for just a small snowstorm. Buying food now is a good idea if I want anything decent.

You use a washcloth and wash it afterword. It's really not that complicated.

I did say it was rhetorical, but sure, if you want to use a washcloth on your bum for a couple of months with all the cleaning that it entails then be my guest.

My advice though, is make sure you have enough and buy before the panic starts.

Definitely. Also, get some nice snacks to while away any boring times. Don’t restrict yourself to essentials.

They make paper towels that are as soft as toilet paper.

Butt anyway, wiping your ass is totally optional in a crisis situation. I've been in parts of the world where the bathrooms don't even have toilet paper. Just a ceramic hole in the ground. That was not a crisis situation but really you can live fine without wiping all the time.

Yes, I've been pointing out since the start of the thread that health systems will break if they get hit all at once. I'd be surprised if more than single-digit percentages of the population understand the maths.

Whether it's possible to do delay the spread without China's extreme measures remains to be seen, but I strongly doubt it. What worked in China won't work in lots of places, and USA & India are at the top of the list for countries who can't or won't have strict quarantine of entire areas.

Totally optional? Great, then I opt for toilet paper.
