Cont: The Trump Presidency: Part 19

I believe the standard reply is, “but...but...Death Panels. The government will decide to stop paying for expensive health care near the end of my life.” That argument ignores the fact that there are death panels now and an insurance company can simply drop you.

As for “I want the insurance I have now!”” If the GOP gets its way pre-existing conditions will not be covered. So, the insurance you have now might be great until you change jobs.

The present insurance system is a form of indentured servitude. Many are tied to their jobs by the need for insurance. The GOP likes that because indentured servitude is just one step from slavery, which they can't have (not yet anyway, but I'm sure they're working on it).

That's nice, retweet a supporter who thinks that he's justified in using violence against anyone who challenges his beliefs.

I'm reminded of... Aetna to 84-year Old: Go Home and Die.

Warning - the link is a personal anecdote, rather than a well-sourced news report or statistics.

The peer-review appeal was contentious. Aetna had denied my mother-in law’s request for transfer from the hospital where she was recovering to a rehabilitative care facility. In a last ditch effort, her primary care doctor was on the phone with the health insurance giant’s representative appealing the denial in what is called a “Peer to Peer Appeal”. She was still ill. She could not get out of bed unassisted. She needed 24/7 care. The Aetna “peer” doctor was unmoved. No further treatment would be approved. Her primary care doctor persisted: would he at least speak with the patient? No further treatment would be approved. Would he speak to her daughter acting as her Power of Attorney. No further treatment would be approved.

Finally in frustration, her primary care doctor asked what was an 84-year old woman who could not care for herself was supposed to do? Denying care would most likely kill her. The Aetna doctor said there would be no further treatment approved, so she should just “go home to die.”

Seriously. Just “go home and die.”

Well, so much for freedom of speech. He'll beat anyone who even asks him a question - and Trump approves.

It's tempting to send out satirical tweets that Trump might retweet, but the sarcasm would be lost on his fans.

I kinda wish he would keep retweeting this so that people will get reminders of what kind of person he is, but then I remember all the minorities genuenly being hurt, both physically and mentally, by him spreading this kind of hatred, and I reconsider.

Very strange times we live in. Curious, I discovered Osigah Kakhu is the 23-year-old son of Nigerian immigrants. And a devoted Trump follower. Here's something Kakhu posted on Quora:
Over 60% of abortions are black babies. We only make up 13% of the US population. If we weren’t aborting black babies at such a high rate we would maybe be up to 25%. We would’ve had a greater say in elections with that percentage. What do you think? Link

Interesting but the abortion figures are not accurate. Looks like Kakhu has been chugging down the Kool-Aid! I also have a feeling, like Trump, Kakhu's primary motivation is in gaining 'name recognition,' and, like his hero, he believes it doesn't matter how. If folks don't like something you said, heck, you just claim you didn't say it. It's a hoax propagated by the evil Fake News media. Main thing is, they remember your name!

The question I have is, was she entitled to be on Medicare? The story says she *thought* she had Medicare but it was really something else.

Unfortunately the fix is for her to liquidate all assets, including her condo, until she's poor enough to get Medicaid. But first her family would need to see why she's not in Medicare.

In my view the transition to UHC should remove the costly adversarial process, while retraining folks in the insurance industry to instead serve as patient advocates. Can't be done overnight.

We don't have a current health care thread, which would be useful IMO.

From the link:

Early this year it became apparent that Aetna’s objective was more about profit than her care.

This will always be true of private insurance companies - always. But I've had beefs with Medicare too. The provider is reimbursed by the procedure, and IMO this sometimes results in unnecessary procedures. But that's also just my anecdotal experience with my mom, who is 95. Her last hospitalization I was desperate to get her out of there. Hospitals are dangerous places. They did fix her up but pretty much forgot to feed her at all, and she got very little sleep during that time.

Since this woman is way over 65, shouldn't she qualify for Medicare without having to sell all her assets?

My question too. Apparently she thought she had signed up for Medicare. That's why I speak of a need for advocates, who could work with the elderly and others to help them make informed choices.

This will not be a popular thing to say, but IF a patient has a terminal prognosis sometimes it makes sense for them to go home and die. But only if there's a terminal diagnosis, and if appropriate hospice support is made available. My main goal in life right now is to enable my mother to die at home. I do have the luxury to work my own part-time hours though.

Thanks for looking up those stats. What a dweeb. Kakhu, not you.

Somebody please tell incompetent (thanks for my high poll numbers) & corrupt politician Adam “Shifty” Schiff to stop leaking Classified information or, even worse, made up information, to the Fake News Media. Someday he will be caught, & that will be a very unpleasant experience!

Are any Democrat operatives, the DNC, or Crooked Hillary Clinton, blaming Russia, Russia, Russia for the Bernie Sanders win in Nevada. If so I suggest calling Bob Mueller & the 13 Angry Democrats to do a new Mueller Report, Democrat Edition. Bob will get to the bottom of it!

The more Trump tweets I read, the more I despise him and the more I shake my head in disbelief at his supporters.

That goes for all of us :( .
Both him and his supporters who handwave all the dreadful stuff he says and does, but still have the gall to call out political opponents for far more minor offenses. Like a bunch of people with narcissistic personality disorder or something.

The link doesn't explicitly say what kind of insurance she has. This sounds like it might be a Medicare Advantage plan, which I understand is chosen by about a third of Medicare-eligible people. But the Advantage plans are supposed to include all standard Medicare benefits and more, which is the incentive to go with them. This sounds terrible in any case, but it's hard to understand without knowing more.

Crazy Bernie and the Democrats should see this. I have done far more for the African American community than any President. Secured funding for HBCUs, Criminal Justice Reform, Opportunity Zones, School Choice, Record Low Unemployment, and so much more. THE BEST IS YET TO COME!

That first paragraph. If Schiff is *demonstrably* leaking confidential material, then by definition he's "caught." What the orange excrescence is really doing here is issuing innuendo.
