Cont: The Trump Presidency: Part 19

Look at the bright side: as bad as anyone thinks it is, objectively speaking, it can get much worse.

I just hope Cheeto von Tweeto does not try to goose his numbers with military violence.

Well, there went a mouthful of Erath pinot noir.

At the 'acquittal celebration' aka Prayer Breakfast today, Trump once again and unsurprisingly, revealed himself for the petty, vulgar, spiteful, and vindictive person he is. And some attendees applauded him for it as he used the occasion, intended for "the political, social, and business elite to assemble and pray together", for yet another platform to make nasty, hateful remarks clearly directed at Pelosi and Romney and to extol himself.
You have to wonder how smart it is to go after Romney with such vitriol.

The Republicans hold a majority in the senate, but they are defending more seats than the Democrats in 2020, and in at least one case (Susan Collins in Maine), they are extremely unpopular. In theory its possible for Trump to eek out another win in the general election, but for the republicans to lose control of the senate (or end up in a tie).

Piss off Romney (or have him expelled from the party) and the republicans could very well find themselves in a minority position in the Senate.

"Trump" and "smart" are oxymorons.

A right-wing anti-Trumper meets Trump cultists:
I asked dozens of people a very simple, straightforward question: “Has President Trump ever told a lie to the American people?” And every single person said, “No.” Never mind that thousands of his misstatements have been meticulously documented. No, they said, he’s never lied.

I brought up his years-old claims that, unlike President Barack Obama, if Trump ever became president, he’d be too busy to play golf. Most people responded by saying they don’t care whether Trump golfs. But three people said that Trump has never golfed since he’s been president. No one said that they thought he did anything wrong with Ukraine. No one knew that our annual deficits just blew past $1 trillion. Everyone believed hundreds of miles of new wall had been built. (Fact check: False!) When I asked whether they thought Mexico was paying for the wall, most people said yes but were at a loss to explain how. On and on it went: CNN was the enemy and Rep. Adam B. Schiff (Calif.), along with the rest of the congressional Democrats, were lying traitors.

Agreed. POYUS is more Ego than Id.

When angered, the president has the self-control and self-awareness of a small child. Just look at how often he accuses others of the things of which he is accused.

Greg Sargent (of the Washington Post):

This is bad. The Treasury Department, which broke the law to avoid giving Congress Trump's tax returns, is turning over records related to Hunter Biden in response to requests from GOP Senators. The sharp contrast demands answers, one exert [sic] tells me

Again, Trump gets a pass, and he just cannot even fake a little thankful humility. Instead, he gives vent to his grievances, savaging everyone on his growing enemies list. Broadcasting to the wide world all this hate and spite against anyone who would dare to oppose him. Ready to rend asunder whole institutions of his own country, to the horror of allied nations and the glee of enemy states.

Perhaps this nihlistic episode must after all run its full course. The Nazis had to bring about the full measure of Germany's humiliation and destruction in order that her aggressive militarism be extirpated. This current spasm by whites fearful of demographic change and general progress that finds its expression through a shameless huckster may well have to reach a painful nadir before the nation can start to heal.

What might this painful bottom look like? History points the way. A financial depression. A *nasty* war. Other possibilities I lack the imagination to perceive. The generations that endured such transformative harshness have largely died off. A too-long period of comparative tranquility has dimmed memory, engendered complacency, made soft and dull. Like the environmental crisis, an inescapable reckoning looms. Or the democratic system is allowed to slip into history.

Trump can't think. (I was going to say can't think strategically or tactically and then thought why restrict the description of his inability.) All he can do is react, someone says something he believes is "bad", "sick", "crazy" I. e. says something negative about him he is simply incapable of not immediately lashing out.

If anyone ever questions that this entire Ukraine affair was about getting crap on the Bidens, then they're too stupid to be unsupervised.

Republicans, showing how wonderful professionalism is by the glaring lack of such in how they operate.

From that link, which is an article by Joe Walsh:
I reminded folks that I’m a conservative, but I said conservative policies aren’t good enough. Decency, honesty and compassion matter, too.

Yes, the very same Joe Walsh who called out "You lie" during one of Obama's state of the union speech. **** off, Walsh.

Just had a long and very good conversation by phone with President Xi of China. He is strong, sharp and powerfully focused on leading the counterattack on the Coronavirus. He feels they are doing very well, even building hospitals in a matter of only days. Nothing is easy, but...

....he will be successful, especially as the weather starts to warm & the virus hopefully becomes weaker, and then gone. Great discipline is taking place in China, as President Xi strongly leads what will be a very successful operation. We are working closely with China to help
