Cont: House Impeachment Inquiry - part 3

And on the second charge Romney voted 'Not Guilty'. Guess he wanted his cake and to eat it too.
I think the problem with the 'obstruction' charges is that Trump can claim executive privilege, then it goes to the courts to figure out.

Its a B.S. excuse. Given past experience, such as Watergate and the Clinton lawsuit it should be a slam dunk case for the judges to say "you must comply", but Trump managed to drag things out,and with the current makeup of the supreme court, past cases may not matter any more. But it does provide the tiniest little figleaf of protection.

Bi-partisan support to convict the president.

That's what should be taken from this, and repeated as Trump attempts his victory lap.
There was bipartisan support for not impeaching him in the first place, too.

"Impeached by all the Democrats." It's good enough for a logo. Resume. Maybe a room in the future Trump Presidential Library and Waxmuseum.

He wasn't impeached by all the Democrats, though, remember?

Thank you Mitt Romney, for saving my lone remaining submicroscopic shard of faith in humanity. Wonder of wonders, it was once saved by another Mormon. (Former football player Steve Young, who opposed prop 8 in CA and called out the church)

The US existed as a constitutional republic for almost 231 years. Now we will find out what an elected monarchy is like.

Humanity maybe. The Senate? ****, no.

He just wants votes and the gravy train to continue. All a facade.

Good for him. I'm not sure if decency is what's motivating him - it could be. Maybe he doesn't want to insult the intelligence of his constituents by voting to acquit a man who is manifestly as guilty as sin.
That was an amazing revelation. I never thought much about Romney before, but his commitment to his convictions, the law, and the truth are so rare as to be commendable.

Romney put those faux Jesus peddlers to shame: he said he took his god and his religion to heart and therefore his oath meant something to him.

Funny that, coming from the one Mormon so many Evangelicals treat as 'other, not Christian'.

It's been over an hour now and Trump hasn't tweeted a veiled threat to Romney, which means he's either been sedated or they hid his phone from him.
Just wait. Trump is rolling around in the hay with the adulation his cult followers are bestowing on him. No need to mar that by bringing up his enemies who didn't bow down.

When he's alone Tweeting tonight expect the Romney insults to come out.

Unrelated to the vote, it's been announced that a man was arrested for threatening to kill Adam Schiff back in October.

Recently released court documents revealed that Jan Peter Meister was indicted on Oct. 23, 2019, after allegedly leaving an expletive-laden message for Schiff saying, “I’m gonna f----- blow your brains out you f----- piece of s---.”

Meister, a convicted felon, told investigators that “he watches Fox News and likely was upset at something that he saw on the news,” according to a summary of a pre-arrest interview with law enforcement described in a court filing.

Another news report said that he was drunk when he made the call and when he was arrested, and that he made the call on the same day that Trump said Schiff should be arrested for treason..

Trump Tweets

I will be making a public statement tomorrow at 12:00pm from the @WhiteHouse to discuss our Country’s VICTORY on the Impeachment Hoax!
Hope springs infernal ... the hope that Trump's gloating will be obnoxious enough to turn some folks off. This wasn't a victory for the country. And there was no hoax, he really was impeached, and the record will reflect that the GOP gave up pretending he hadn't done anything wrong. It's established fact that his various denials were untrue. But, it is a political process and the votes just weren't there to remove him.

It will still bug him that a few Republicans questioned his actions and one even voted to convict. Anything short of total adulation will never be enough for him. Deep down he wants Nancy to love him as well.

I keep thinking another shoe will drop, but I have no idea what it would be.

Bill Maher said after the 2016 election that "we" (liberals, progressives) should be sorry for trashing John McCain and Mitt Romney because they were decent, honorable men that we just disagreed with. That helped pave the way for D. Trump.

McCain was spinning right to the end, soaking up the praise for "saving" the ACA by voting down Trumpcare, and then turning right around and voting for the tax reform that included kneecapping ACA.

And despite his reputation for "going rogue", he had a solid rating with the American Conservative Union (81 as opposed to, say, Nancy Pelosi's 2½), he supported Moscow Mitch's refusal to grant Merrick Garland a hearing, and he promised to, along with the rest of the Senate republicans, oppose any Supreme Court nomination by Hillary Clinton had she won.

I see that you are pretty much of the "all conservatives are evil" school of thought.

I just find it hard to associated the above mentioned acts with the notion that McCain should be considered an honorable republican.

Just as I'll give credit to McCain for speaking out against torture and recognising that global warming is real, I'll give credit to Romney for at least breaking ranks on Article I, but that doesn't mean I'm going to let him off the hook for all the dodgy things he has done in the past, such as the 47% remark.

I keep thinking another shoe will drop, but I have no idea what it would be.

Since Trump now has almost complete control of the DOJ and with potential whistleblowers having to be concerned about having their identities made public, I'm wondering how we will know about any further dropped shoes.

Lol

Just heard the news.

Not one to say I told you so but ......

And it is only going to get worse for the Democrats.

And I stand by saying the whole thing will backfire badly and Trump will win again.

Yeah, and should we try to be friends with Bush like Ellen?

John McCain was a warmonger and one of the Keating Five. I don't think he deserves a ton of credit for telling a racist white lady that Obama is not a Muslim. Democrats were swooning over him back when the "Straight-Talk Express" challenged Bush for the Republican nomination. He has principles, but so does John Bolton.

Mitt Romney's an opportunist, and phonier than Trump in some ways. He refused to release his tax returns. He was all too willing to bend the knee to be Secretary of State.

The problem with Trump is that he's uniquely vulgar, clueless, and corrupt, but what has he done in terms of policy? Like Bush, his incompetence is self-limiting. So far he's managed to avoid starting major wars. He's run-up the deficit, but that's standard operating procedure. He's been riding the anti-immigration wave (he didn't start it). As so often noted, Trump's a symptom. Any other Republican would have appointed the same judges and rolled back the same regulations. We wouldn't have gotten the anti-trade stuff with another Republican, but if Ted Cruz were president, people here would say Trump would've been better.

I don't think there is such a thing as a politician who gets to the position of running for President without being a little phoney and a little opportunistic. And both McCain and Romney fit that description. But there were limits to what they would and wouldn't do.

I rarely agreed with either, but I can't and won't ignore when they did or said the right thing. The ACA is still on the books because of McCain. And McCain was right when he tore into the DOD when they wanted to discontinue the A-10. Romney's healthcare plan in Massachusetts was the precursor to the ACA.

Trump is damn lucky that McCain wasn't around for this trial because he wouldn't have quietly got in line.

Good for you.

And I don't believe for one second that is true. I'm not saying Trump can't win this November just that it won't be because the Democrats impeached him.
