Here is a genuine conspiracy theory...

Since no one has bought this up, it's interesting to note that the 1975 British TV series 'Surviviors', set in the aftermath of a devastating viral outbreak had a title sequence implying that the illness resulted from the accidental release of a bioweapon under development by the Chinese!


By contrast the 2005 remake of the series blamed the fictional illness on an attempt to genetically engineer a cure for the common cold.
 
There was a paper uploaded to bioRxiv prior to peer review, which claimed that the novel coronavirus had genetic sequences from HIV and implied that it had been deliberately created as a bioweapon. It's since been withdrawn, but Forbes has an article about it.

The work, by a group based in India, was entitled “Uncanny similarity of unique inserts in the 2019-nCoV spike protein to HIV-1 gp120 and Gag.”

“Based on analysis of multiple, very short regions of proteins in the novel coronavirus, the bioRxiv paper claimed that the new coronavirus may have acquired these regions from HIV,” said Arinjay Banerjee, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow in virology at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada who has extensively studied coronaviruses.

However, the authors then speculated that this might not be a coincidence and perhaps the bits of genetic code were put there intentionally. The conspiracy theory was addressed today by a scientist from the Wuhan Institute of Virology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, who rubbished the claims.

Essentially, the scientists found that yes, there are some additions in the nCoV coronavirus originating in Wuhan that other coronaviruses don’t have, which are similar to pieces of sequence found in HIV. But, the kicker here is that these pieces of genetic code are also found in countless other viruses and there’s no reason to believe they specifically came from HIV, at all.

Actually the coronavirus would be a lousy biological warfare weapon.
But then the people who scream biological weapon at every opportunity don't seem to understand what you want a biological weapon to do....

Oh, I agree, it's a silly claim. Dr. Francis Boyle said they were trying to weaponise SARS and they got this. Well, this is hardly as effective as SARS. O_o

Well, if you're targeting an entire population, you would probably want to increase the contagiousness while delaying the onset of symptoms to reduce visibility and prevent the authorities from taking preventative action until as many people are infected as possible.
That's how I always win the browser-based game Pandemic. :D Pandemic 2, I've never beaten however. Someone sneezes in Outer Mongolia and Madagascar shuts down everything.
