It was intended to be humerous. While it is true that some versions of the birth of Mithras have him being born to a virgin in a cave on Dec. 25, others say "from a rock". The point was that the nativity scene is not uniquely Christian, just as many of the stories of the bible are borrowed and spliced together.

It depends. You can find just about anything you like on the internet. This link talks about Mithras being born in a cave to a virgin, but that particular part is not sourced, though some others are.

The locals have their annual row over the courthouse nativity. The county has given up fighting over it, and doesn't bother.

Meanwhile, some guy apparently has a nativity in the back of his truck and parades it around the courthouse square, and everyone gets all smug about how he is sticking to the ACLU or whoever, who, of course, just shrugs whatever.

These folks just don't get it.
