It's almost as if the emergency declaration was meant for show, rather than effect. That's not to say that some good steps haven't been taken towards addressing the opioid crisis, but... Trump isn't one for much substance behind his words, and his efforts to do things that directly counter the effects of the good things are quite notably significant.

The president likes to consider himself perfect.

There are times that when it comes to public health, the environment, and natural disaster preparation he appears to be a perfect storm of stupidity, pride, greed, vindictiveness, mulish ignorance, bullying, hucksterism, and pettifoggery.

Six years ago, who could have predicted that America would be on the verge of re-electing a President too impatient to read one-page summaries, too lazy and vain to read well-prepared briefing books because that would interfere with his ability to make gut decisions, and too childish to let an error fade away without unashamedly drawing a line on a weather map.

The VFW may as well ask for a flying, rainbow colored unicorn. The likelihood of getting that is far greater than ever getting an apology from Trump. In his mind, he's never, ever wrong about anything. Only losers apologize.

I know he probably won't. Hopefully it will cause his support to erode among veterans. (Apparently the attempted pull-out from Syria and talk of privatizing parts of their health care may have made some veterans nervous.)

Of course veterans should have known a long time ago that Trump would not be acting in their best interest.

Considering that, and considering that Bernie Sanders has made veterans' issues a high priority throughout his career, Trump's move seems (let's be generous here) not entirely to his advantage.
